March 1842, d. ~1905)? Census records for Francis Marion (F.M.) Perry/Hill are as follow: 1850 Census, Franklin County, Tennessee, Civil District # 9 (Census taken on 10/18/1850. CD # 9 is in the northeast corner of Franklin County.) William Hill 34 M TN Malinda 35 F TN Jackson 15 M TN Mary J. 13 F TN Bailey 11 M TN Martha 9 F TN Johnson 6 M TN William P. 4 M TN Margrat 1 F TN Francis M. W. 6 M TN Sarah 4 F TN Francis Hill 18 M TN Note that F. M.’s name changed from Perry in 1850 to Hill in 1860. Since William Hill’s wife was Malinda Perry, it is highly likely that F. M. was related to her. 1870 Census, Franklin County, Tennessee, Civil District # 10 (Census taken on 7/18/1870, CD # 10 is south of CD # 9 and east of Winchester.) Hill, Maryan 27 M TN Sarah 30 F TN Alen 8 M TN William 2 M TN Francis M. Hill married Sarah Ann Gipson on 12/14/1860. She was born about 1840 and died before 1879. Hill, Franses 58 Mar 1842 M TN Julia 40 Jun 1859 F TN Hairse 18 Jun 1881 M TN Jackson 16 Jun 1883 M TN Myrtle 11 Aug 1888 F TN Marie 4 May 1896 F TN F. M. has not been found in any 1910 census. His death date and burial site are not known. It is possible that he was one of the earliest to be buried in the Hill Cemetery in Franklin County, which is near where William Hill lived. Another possibility is the Wileman Cemetery in Coffee County, where some of William’s children are buried. In either case, there is no stone marking his grave. A search for his parents has focused on the 1840 census for Franklin County, Tennessee. 1840 Census, Franklin County, Tennessee Pass Mountain Miller’s CD # 10 (East of Winchester) Wm. Hill 11001-10001 William married Malinda Perry (b. 1817) in 1834. The children listed here are apparently Andrew Jackson (b. 10/20/1835), Bailey (b. 1/28/1839), and Mary Jane (b. 1/28/1837). A close neighbor is: Mima Perry -00201. (Her full name is Jemima.) In Thurman’s CD # 11 (South of Winchester) John Perry, Sr. 100110001-001001001 John Perry (b. ~1775, NC) is likely the father of Malinda, Matthew, and Jemima. Hurricane & Mountain CD # 14 (Northwest of Winchester) Wm. Perry 01101-1022 This William Perry apparently has no connection with Malinda Perry. There are no other Perrys in Franklin County in 1840. Jemima Perry (b. ~1815) married John M. Haskins on 3/26/1841. She was probably a sister of Matthew M. Perry (b. 1828, NC) and Malinda Perry. It is unlikely that she is the mother of Francis Marion (F.M.) Perry/Hill, since she married Haskins in March 1841, a year before F. M. was born. Matthew Perry and his wife Zerlida (b. 1818, TN) had a daughter named Jemima Virginia Perry (b. 1856), an indication that Matthew was a brother of Jemima Perry. Who were the two females (10-15 years old in 1840) in the household of Jemima Perry? One of these is possibly the mother of F.M. Possibilities: Elizabeth Perry married Milledge Gambol on 12/27/1849 and Matilda Perry married Ferney Swearingen on 3/17/1850 in Franklin County. These could be the females, 10-15 years old in 1840. This would make F. M. a great-nephew of Malinda Perry Hill. It is reasonable that he would come to live with her and William, particularly after his mother (Elizabeth or Matilda?) married. In 1850, F.M. Perry, 9 years old, was living with William Hill in Civil District # 9, Franklin County, Tennessee. The census was taken on 10/18/1850. If his birthdate was March, 1842, he should have been 8 years old. In 1860, he was listed as 18 years old, still with William Hill, but his name was changed to Hill. This census was taken on August 28, 1860. This is consistent with a birthdate of March, 1842. Family tradition is that F. M.’s father was a Turner. Census records show the following Turners in Franklin County in 1840 Town CD # 1 (Winchester) John Turner 000200001-000000001 Robinson Turner 00001-1001 Pond & Mountain CD # 5 (Southwest of Winchester) Frances (sic) Turner 1222001-200001 Thurman’s CD # 11 (South of Winchester) John Turner 0011001-0010001 Of these, the most likely, based on the location near Jemima Perry, is one of the two sons of the John Turner in CD # 11.
