A William Lindsey (b. 1829, SC, son of Reuben Lindsey) is listed in the 1850 census of Union County, South Carolina. This could be William David Lindsey. In the 1880 census, the records for his children indicate that their father was born in North Carolina. In 1900, the record for his son, William J., states that his father and mother were both born in Tennessee. In 1910 and 1920, the records indicate that William J.’s father and mother were both born in Alabama. In 1930, the records show that his father was born in South Carolina and his mother in North Carolina. Most likely, William was born in either North or South Carolina. The 1870, 1880, and 1990 census records and Eliza’s death certificate indicate that she was born in South Carolina. Her death certificate gives her birth date as 8/9/1839. Census records are generally consistent with this date. The 1920 census, taken when she was more than 70 years old, indicates that she was born in Alabama. Most likely, she was born in South Carolina. Eliza probably had an older relative, Lavinia (b. 1833, SC), probably a sister, who married William Thomas Weaver (b. 1813, SC; d. before 1870). This is based on the facts that Lavinia Weaver and Eliza Lindsey were listed as adjacent families in the 1870 census, both are listed as being born in South Carolina, and Eliza named her younger daughter Lavinia (Vinnie). Marriage According to her pension application, Eliza states that she and William David Lindsey were married in Cherokee County. Although the record shows that the state was South Carolina, Cherokee County in South Carolina did not exist until 1897. Apparently, Eliza and William were married in Cherokee County, Alabama. The courthouse in Cherokee County, Alabama, burned in 1882, destroying many records. A re-compilation of records, “Cherokee County, Alabama, Marriages 1836-1881,” by W. A. Lewis, 1990, does not list their marriage. Thus, Eliza’s maiden name is not known. Children To the marriage of William and Eliza, children were born. Other than the 1870 census, no records for the older daughter, Mary E. (b. 1859, AL) have been found. The younger daughter, Vinnie J. (b. 1862, AL, d. bef. 1900), married Thomas J. Adams (b. 1859, TN, d. bef. 1900) on 11/8/1881 in Grundy County, TN. Her children were James B. Adams (b. 8/1881, TN, d. ?), and Ellen B. Adams (b. 8/1884, TN, d. 11/13/1919, Knoxville, TN). Census records for Eliza’s son, William J. (Nick) Lindsey (b. 7/2/1867?, TN, d. 11/8/1939, TN), are included below. The birth date for William J. is questionable because his age in the census records is 3 in 1870, 13 in 1880, 32 (July 1867) in 1900, 45 in 1910, 52 in 1920, and 63 in 1930. His tombstone in the Baker Cemetery, Franklin County, TN) has the date of birth as 7/2/1855 and date of death as 11/8/1939. This year of birth is obviously incorrect. If his father died in 1863, his birth date and all the ages listed in the census records are wrong. It seems likely that William David Lindsey is not the father of William J. Lindsey, In her pension application (see below), Eliza first states that she and William David had two children. Then she states ‘two girls and one boy.’ William J.’s most likely date of birth is 7/2/1867. Census Records 1850 Census William D. Lindsey (b. ca1830) has not been found in any 1850 census records of Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, or Tennessee. Since Eliza’s last name is not known, no searches for her can be made. 1860 Census Neither William D. Lindsey (b. 1830), Eliza (b. 1839), nor Mary (b. 1859) have been found in any 1860 census records of Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, or Tennessee. William D. died on or about 9/30/1863 (see below). 1870 Census August 16, 1870 Grundy Co., Tennessee District # 8 Pelham Family Name Age Sex Place of birth 11 Weaver, Lavina 37 F S.
