Captain Burvarde, Sharpe, yarbrough, Carter & Walton. Lts. Dixon and Dudley. Entered service 18 July 1782 under Capt Benjamin Carter, discharged about 10 July 1783 by Col Murfree & Capt Walton. Enrolled at Frowhawkes mills Rowan County North Carolina as drafted Militia man for 12 months, at battle of Eutaw Springs. From Frowhawkes mills, marched through Camden in South Carolina to high hills of Santee, where Genl Greenes head quarters were, from there to Camden then to Charleston to fight British Army at Martins Tavern about 12 miles from Eutaw Springs. Capt Carters Lt, Dudley, shot through the leg in the engagement. From Santee to Orangeburg in SC, then to Edisto River, (service record continues). Declarant resided in Rowan co, NC when he returned from Army, then to Buncombe co, NC then Sevier co, TN, from thence to West Tennessee, then McMinn co, E.T. where he now resides. Barb [Note: Barb written all caps]. 5 June 1833, James Stanfield, McMinn Co, TN, Amendatory Declaration: Served as previously stated as orderly Sergeant. Born Edgecombe County, No. Car. on 4th day of February 1753. No proof of age, kept it in his memory as received from parents, "neither of them could write, ...nor myself either". Enlisted in Rowan co, NC; lived in Buncombe Co, NC; removed to Sevier co, TN; from there to Bedford co, TN; from there to McMinn where now lives. James Stanfield d 3 Nov 1840 of Bradley co, TN, Payable to Cornelius & James Stanfield, Delpha Price & Mary Ann Brittain, only surviving children. 6 Mar 1844, William Baily of Polk Co, TN, age 82 states James & Fanny Stanfield lived together as husband and wife, marriage took place prior to 1 January 1794, and he remembers "one of children falling in the fier and getting very Badly Burnt upwards of Fifty three years ago". William (his X mark) Baily. 4 May 1844: Declaration of William Brittain, resident of Bradley Co, TN. William Brittain, age 57, son-in-law of James Stanfield. James Stanfield d 3 Nov 1840 leaving a widow and children heirs at law viz: Delphy Price, Cornelius Stanfield, James Stanfield, Mary Ann Brittain. Fanny Stanfield d 18 Dec 1842. S/s William Brittain 4 May 1844: Mary Ann Brittain age 50 years, resident of Bradley Co, TN. James Stanfied d 3 Nov 1840, Fanny Stanfield d 18 Dec 1842. She is the 8th child. Mary Ann (her X mark) Brittain 4 May 1844 Wm James Stanfield of Bradley Co, TN, age 64, well acquainted with "Uncle James Stanfield" up to their deaths. James Stanfield d 3 Nov 1840 and Fanny d 18 Dec 1842. " James & Fanny Stanfield was married previous to Seventeen hundred and ninety four affiants well recolects that one of the aforesaid James & Fanny Stanfields children had fits and fell in the fier and got burnt when affiant was a very small Boy". James (his X mark) Stanfield 11 March 1846 David Nelson, McMinn Co, TN states he was acquainted with James Stanfield up to his death, and that he moved from the state of North Carolina and settled on pidgen river in Sevier County, TN in 1786. s/s David Nelson 21 June 1848, John Hambright wrote pension office, "I am requested by the heirs of Mary Stanphill who was the widow of James Stanphill Deceast who was a Revolutionary Pensioner"...paid Knoxville, Tennessee...widow deceast Mary Stanphill. Inquired if claim processed [?pension arrears; other benefits? mlj] UNDATED: Note in pension file following above letter [but pages not microfilmed in date order], have no idea what this means, or if it even pertains to James & Fanny's pension: "Phebe Ann 13 1 June '48 Saml T 10 5 July '48 Chr F 8 4 June '48 15 Sep 1849, Bradley Co, TN: William Rogers, Benjamin F. Martin, Sarah Wallin and Martha L. Aiden were acquainted with James Stanfield; d 3 Nov 1839. Widow Fanny d 18 Dec 1842. Were near neighbors. State four children survived Fanny: Cornelius and James Stanfield, Delpha Price and Mary Ann Brittain. All testators signed. 5 Oct 1849, Charleston, Bradley County, TN, letter from Samuel Workman to Pension Office. "Enclosed...additional proof in order to obtain an increase of Pension for the Benefit of James & Cornelious Stanfield, Delpha Price and Mary Ann Brittain. Mistake in date of death of James; should be 3 November 1839. Requests pension made payable to Knoxville, Tennessee instead of Nashville "being much more convenient to the claimants and also being the Agency where the original pension was always paid to James Stanfield decd". [NOTE: This could tie in Roane co, TN group. mlj] 28 Dec 1910, Mrs. A. C. Rauscher, Jackson Co, TN, stated ancestor James Standfield b 1731, m Fanny Gwinn 1753, served Infty 4 years, returned after the war to his home in Winchester, Tenn, moved to McMinn Co, d 1824 at age of 93, drew pension at Knoxville, Tenn, wife died 3 years later 1827 at age of 93. Polly Ann Standfield, d/o James & Fanny, b 1796, d 1874, m William Brittain b 1794, d 1854. Daughter Louisa Brittain b 1817 still living, m Jonathan WOOD, b 1802 died 187?. Son Jonathan Franklin Wood b 1851, still living, m Bettie McReynolds, b 1855 still living. I, Anne Wood Rauscher, am their daugher (sic). Note from Mary Lu Johnson: Many researchers believe James Standfield's wife to be Frances "Fanny" Guinn/Gwinn, possibly the daughter of Cornelius Guinn, who was living near family members on the 1784-1787 Surry Co, NC State Census and 1790 U.S. Census in Morgan's District, Burke Co, NC.
