She had suffered from breast cancer for over two years and had endured considerable pain. Although more than 50 years have passed, her death remains the most traumatic event of my life. I miss her still. I transcribed documents related to her funeral so that they could be maintained in electronic form; the originals show signs of age. Some of these records are probably trivial, except to my family. The "In Memory of Bertha" document is a direct transcript of the document signed by those attending the funeral. Some names are duplicated. As an oversight, my father's name was not included. Handwritten entries are presented in script. The "Contributors" document contains lists of people who contributed to my mother's medical expenses, and the "Cards from Flowers" list shows that many people cared. The document of most interest to genealogists is probably "Funeral Attendants," in which I have tried to identify each person who was present. Those attending were mostly from Sewanee, where my mother's parents lived; Roark's Cove, where she was born; and Alto/Wilder's Chapel, where my father's family lived and where my mother and father raised their family. In this list, I used the following abbreviations: d/o, daughter of; s/o, son of; w/o, wife of; and h/o, husband of. By identifying as many as possible of those who attended the funeral, I have provided, I hope, a view these communities half a century ago. Some people remain unidentified. I would greatly appreciate identification of these folks and also correction of errors that are likely to be present. To comment on these documents, please contact me at the address below. Donald L.
