Filed in Boswell Family File-Mary Jane Boswell Scrapbook, Franklin County Historical Society, Franklin County Library, Winchester, TN. DIED. On Tuesday, March 19th, 1901 at 3 o'clock a.m., Robert Hines, aged 80 years, 2 months and 19 days. The lines above tell the story of the death of one of Franklin county's most aged, most prominent and best loved citizens. A native of this county, and a citizen among us ever since his birth, his whole life was as an open book, revealing to us such a depth of character, such a life of honesty, uprightness, neighborly and honorable bearing as few men can hope to attain. Bro. Hines was a man of keen perception, who intuitively knew his duty, and, knowing it, performed it with that steadfastness of purpose that betokened the courage and consciousness of right. He owed no man a grudge he had no enemies. His christian bearing and noble conduct were indeed a marvel in this age of sin and progress. A steadfast member of his church, he put into daily practice the doctrines he had inculcated in early life, giving freely of his means to church and charity, and giving to the world, by his own example, a character most worthy of emulation. Perhaps he had his faults we all have them but if true, they were so few and so slight that his manly, christian bearing hid them from mortal view. The highest praise the world can give its most truthful and worthy testimonial must be: "He was an honest man." Bro. Hines was born in the 10th district of Franklin county. At an early age he espoused the cause of christianity, and had been a member of Boiling Fork Baptist church for over fifty-five years. He had been twice married, his first wife being Miss Bettie Stroud, to whom two children were born, Porter Hines, now deceased, and Mrs. Bettie Edwards, of Georgia. His last wife was formerly Miss Sarah Moore, and to this union ten children were born, Isaac D. Hines, near Decherd; Mrs. Wm. Keith, of Cowan; Mrs. Wesley Embrey, of Winchester; Mrs. Lula Hawkins, of Cowan; Lewis M. Hines, of Tracy City; Mrs. Florence Bennett, deceased; Mrs. Laura Mason, deceased; Lee Hines, deceased; Mrs. Berta Ramsey, of Winchster; and W. J. Hines, of Decherd. Funeral services were held at the Christian church in Decherd, Wednesday, at 2 p.m., his old pastor, Rev. Joe Byrom officiating. President J. W. Terrill, of Terrill College also made a most touching address at the close of the services. The burial was conducted by Cumberland Lodge No. 158, F. and A. M., assisted by Decherd Lodge No. 567. [The birth date inscribed on Robert Hines' tombstone in Decherd City Cemetery is Dec. 28, 1820.] [Spelling, capitalization, and punctuation as in original.] ___________________________________________________________________ Copyright.
