BRYAN In pursueance of the annexed commission to me directed from the Honorable the court of Chancey at Winchester in the state of Tennessee I have caused to come before me at the court house in the town of Newbern in the County of Craven in the State of North Carolina on the fourth day of May 1837 Caleb Bell aged about 28 years a witness in behalf of the complaintants in a certain matter of controversy in said court pending bewteen Charles L. Ward and others complaintants and George W. Thompson and others complaintants, who being first sworn on the Holy Evangelist to speak the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth deposeth as follows, that he knew David Ward of Carteret County in the State of North Carolina, that he is dead, that he left the following named persons his only children viz; Comfort the wife of William T. Bell, Sen, Abigal the wife of Colo. John H. Hill, Hope the wife of David Birden, William L. Ward, Hannah Ward, Alice the wife of John T. Jones, Elizabeth Ward and Rufus Ward. Caleb Bell further deposeth that he knew William Ward of the town of NewBern, that he was the brother of David Ward dec’d that said William Ward is dead and that he left the following named persons his only children viz; Charles Ward, Sarah Ward, William W. Ward, Cicero Ward and Julia Ward and further this deponent saith not.
