From Gibson County Court Minutes, May Term, 1885, pp. 286-287. We the undersigned [house ?] holders, after being duly sworn, have proceeded to set apart to Mrs Emma Carroll, widow of Charles Carroll deceased, so much of the crop and provisions and money on hand, or other assets as may be sufficient, in our opinion, to support her and her family one year from the death of said husband. We set apart to her for said purposes the following articles, to wit: All the bacon on hand, about 800 lbs Lard, about 100 or more Ten dollars in money to buy molasses $10 Twelve dollars for sugar and coffee $12 Five dollars for all other purposes $5 The salt on hand, 200 lbs or more All the wheat and flour on hand about 20 bushels Five barrels of corn This March 30, 1883 S. A. Boyett E. W. Townsend J. G. Porter This entry was on p. 287, but I didn’t get the book designation. Note that this establishes the fact that Emma outlived Charles Carroll and yet in the 1880 census, she was listed as “insane”.
