He told us last Monday if we wouldn't have any more parties, he would help us get up a big party and supper on the fourteenth of February. Warner Dunlap brought a sleigh and we had a jolly time coasting down "Old High Hill." But it got broken. Some of the boys went up to Mr. Woods' and got his sleigh. A crowd of us girls got on it, and some of the smaller boys were pulling it. I guess it was going too fast for them, so they turned it loose and got out of the way and it ran out of the road and went crash! against a large stump. No one was hurt ( much ), but that ended our coasting. When we returned from school Mr. J. E. Campbell and Ross were here. Mrs. Jennie Campbell sent Ma a three pound can of grapes. After Mr. Hess got through with his lessons this afternoon, he sent the girls to the music room to practice singing. We sung until we got tired, then got us something to eat. And hadn't finished eating before he rung the bell for us, then he said for all the girls that had been eating instead of singing as he told them, to stay in after school. I believe Elsie, Annie and Mag were the only ones that didn't have to stay in. But he didn't keep us in but a few minutes. Prof. got hold of Bob Fitzgerald's diary and read some of it to the school. Last Saturday was a nice clear day and we all got out and picked peas like turks. We picked a wagon level full of peas. Mr. Bob Barnett paid us a short call just as we were getting ready to start home. He wanted to cut some of Pa's pea hay on the halves. Pa consented to let him cut some as he insisted so and didn't save much of his own. Well, he had a hand out there cutting all day Monday and Tuesday too - but Pa and Sam each had their mowers in there helping him that day. Well, Mr. Barnett's mower got broken down late that evening so that ended his cutting dido's. Pa has commenced to break up his wheat land. Sam came over today and raked up some hay. Ma and Pa went Sunday morning to see the Dr. and from there they went up to Mr. Jim Campbell's and stayed until after dinner, then came down and stayed awhile at Cousin Mattie's. They started home and got nearly to Mrs. Rowland's when their buggy got out of fix. Ma went up to the house and the old gentleman helped Pa fix his buggy. They got home about dark. New Years Day dawned bright and clear. Very pleasant weather. Oh! how thankful we ought to be for this beautiful New Years morning and the many blessings that surround us. This has been a cloudy day. The weather is very pleasant for this time of year. Aurie carried Pearl to Mr. Bob Barnett's Wednesday afternoon to stay all night. They went around by the railroad, and the people had been hauling logs, and the road was almost impassable, so they like to have never gotten through that lane without breaking the buggy, but Providentially they got through all right. Pearl and Aurie went to Fruitland Thursday and bought Eugene and me a tablet apiece. Uncle Lewis helped Pa plow yesterday. Mrs. Kate Bennett has been very low, but is a good deal better now, and they have some hope of her recovery. Aunt Polly Blake came today. Bessie came late this afternoon and brought Ralph to stay all night with us. Feb. 13, 1894. Tuesday. Pa killed hogs today. Mr. Dougan came and helped him. Bessie and the children spent the day here. Congratulate me! I finished my essay tonight. The subject of which is "Life is What We Make It." Feb. 15. Thursday. It snowed a little last night, and today, but it didn't stay on the ground much. Bernard is a little sick tonight. Elsie came to the school- house this afternoon, and to her great surprise, received a nice new side saddle, of which Prof. Hess, Prof. Senter and nine of the boys were the donors. She seemed to appreciate it very highly. Elsie's Mother is still improving. Ten o'clock. I must retire. _____________________ Aunt Maliaaie Mayfield - wife of Joseph Green Mayfield. Died Sunday, Jan. 28, 1894. Page 53 Feb. 17, 1894. Saturday. Yesterday ( the 16th ) was Pearl's and my birthday. She is twenty-two and I am seventeen. The Superintend is going to send out examinations for all the grades, instead of letting the teachers give their own questions. We will all have to study up, and as we are preparing for a concert too, we have to put in all our time, so the eighth grade has decided to study on Saturdays. In consequence, Prof. W. S. Hess and the six members of the eighth grade assembled at the school house this morning and spent the whole day in review. It seems very strange to go to school on Saturday, but I think we will be greatly benefited by so doing just at this time. Mrs. Kate Bennett is no better. Brother Jessie came and took Bernard home Friday. Buddie came down today. Mch. 2, 1894. Friday. This has been a beautiful day. How gladly we welcome the Spring! Ten o'clock, so good night. Mch. 4. Sunday. Bessie and family spent the day with us. Pearl, Eugene and I went to Sunday School. We expected preaching, but were disappointed. Misses Lula and Lillie Ing, Florence Galespie, and Miss Rainey from Humboldt were there. They are visiting the Dunlaps. Mr. Sam Hoover came last evening and spent the night. He carried Aurie down to Eaton to see Cousin Vick Mayfield and the folks down there this morning. My! She is going to stay a whole week! Mch. 10, 1894. Saturday. She and Pearl have gone to Mrs. Barnett's to stay a little while this afternoon. They left Ralph here to stay with me. We have sixteen little chickens and only one hen setting. I guess Aurie will come home tomorrow. Pearl planted a little in the garden this week. Ralph is up here talking to me, so I'll quit writing. Mch. 16, 1894. Oh! We have commenced our examination that the Supt. sent out for us. He certainly means for us to be thorough. We got through with only two studies today. History and Grammar. I guess we will have about fourteen. The 6th grade was absent from school today. Only the 5th and 8th were examined. Pearl and I went to Humboldt yesterday afternoon. We went to Mrs. Fisher's to have my graduating dress cut. The waiste is white swiveled silk and the skirt is cream wollen goods. Aurie went to Fruitland today. She bought a paper of cabbage seeds and several letters. We have a new correspondent in the family. Guess who? Pa plowed some today. Jack ( the mule ) got sick and he quit, came home and fixed up the garden pailings and put up some posts to train the honeysuckle vine and fixed us two wash stands. Aurie is making her last summer shallie with drab silk. I think 'tis lovely. Eugene stacked boards. Lonzie helped Eugene make him a nice little wagon. This afternoon was quite a rainy one. Pearl came to the school house after me on old Heck. He didn't "hike" one bit. Good night. April 1, 1894. Sunday. We met at the school house last night and practiced for our Tuesday night's concert. We got our printed programmes for Sunday, Monday night and Tuesday night, last evening. It was very cloudy and sprinkled rain a little last night, and we were afraid we would have a bad day for our Commencement sermon, but it faired off this morning and we had a splendid day, with the exception of muddy roads. Dr. W. G. Inman of Humboldt preached an excellent sermon. There was a right large crowd. "The music was splendid." Mr. Cole Galespie played on the organ and Miss Effie Galespie played on the piano. Mr. Tom Lisle sang tenor for us. Mr. Sam Hoover came last night. Cousin Ina and Mr. Newt Pierce intended coming, but Ina was sick. James Dunlap recited "Our Country." Elsie Bennett's subject was "Our Diplomas." Joseph Harper's was "Aim of Life." Then we sang the song "Though We Part." So closed our exercises. Mr. Hess made us all acquainted with Prof. Meadows. The Church was just crowded. Mr. Orkeny Wilson carried Pearl tonight. I got acquainted with him. Prof. Hess, Mr. Senter, Miss Effie Galespie, Miss Florence Mobley and the Graduates met at the school-house and marched to the Church. Mamie Campbell played a march for us. This is a lovely night. Good night. April 4, 1894. Wednesday. The little folks gave their concert yesterday afternoon. We had the school room darkened and the lamps lighted up. It was a real nice little entertainment. Mr. Newt Pierce and Mr. Sam Hoover came last evening to go to the concert. Bob Fitzgerald, Clay Powell and Cary Hardison came after a lamp for the concert. Oh! We had a "grand" concert last night. The house was just crowded. It rained nealy all night and the people had a terrible time getting home. A grreat many stayed at the school-house all night. It was pitch dark and we couldn't see how to escape the mudholes, so we had an awful time getting home. We got almost as wet as "drowned rats." Pa sent Eugene back to the school-house with the lantern to help the others to get home. Mr. Hugh Simmon's and Mr. Gus Davidson's horse got aloose and they came down here and stayed all night. I guess last night will ever be remembered by all who attended the concert at High Hill. Not on account of the entertainment, but on account of the dark and rainy night. Messrs. Simmons and Davidson went to look for their horse this morning, but of no avail. Pa let them have Heck to drive home. Directly after they had started, Mr. Craig came with their horse. It followed him home last night. He then took it to Mr. Joe Stallings, where the boys would pass. They went by Mr. Bob Barnett's. They came along there directly and got their horse, turned Heck aloose and then came back here to bring the harness home. Mr. Newt Pierce carried Pearl down to Eaton this morning to see Cousin Ina and the rest of the kinfolks. Mr. Sam Hoover stayed until this afternoon and took the five o'clock train and went home. We went back to the school-house this morning, swept it out and took the curtains down. Anna Bennett has the mumps this morning. Thursday. This is a beautiful day. It is very pleasant this morning. Pa and Eugene have gone about their work. I think they are preparing ground for corn. Oh! How we miss Pearl. I am lonesome. There were only two Graduates, Jessie Penn and Emmie Mathews. Jessie's subject was, "That is Best which Lieth Nearest." Emmie's was, "Signs and Sayings." She recited hers. ______________________ "Old House" - John N. Mayfield and Sarah L. Booth, his wife, lived in a log house for a while before building another house. Page 56 Apr. 7, 1894. Saturday. One of them was thrown from her horse, but was not hurt and got back on it right straight. A little pig was put into the ring, and about a score of little boys took after it. It was to belong to the one who caught it. It was caught directly, but to be sure it was fair, they gave them another trial. A great many more boys joined them that time. But the same little boy caught it both times. After that we started home. So closed a pleasantly spent day at the fair. We came by Bessie's and took Ralph home, as he went with us to the fair. They tried to stop Emma Lee, and Pearl jumped out to fix it; but the buggy struck the horse and she struck out to running as hard as she could. In turning the corner in the lane by the rail-road, the buggy turned over and threw Aurie out against the fence and scratched the back of her hands right badly on the barbed wire. Emma Lee broke loose from the buggy and came running home. I just had returned from school. I was very uneasy about Pearl and Aurie, so I took the harness off and saddled the horse and went to see about them. I met them at the big branch, bringing the clothes and tub with them. Aunt Sookey ( colored ) started up to the school-house to see some of Mr. Dunlap's folks, got about even with the well and sat down to rest. Mr. Hess saw her and told all the girls to get what they had left in their dinner buckets and take it to Aunt Sookey. They responded immediately, and all went down to see her. Mr. Hess came in a few minutes and all talked to her a good while. She seemed to appreciate the dinner so much. She said she wasn't far from a hundred years old. Three little boys, who were out hunting, came here today for a drink of water. It was Frank Hardison and two little Allbright boys. They had several rabbits and a bird. They watered their dog also. "With sweet repose and slumbers light, I bid you all a fair good-night." Dec. 3, 1894. Bessie and family came and spent Saturday night and Sunday with us. Mr. Dougan brought Aurie home Saturday morning. She lacked one or two lessons of getting through with the "dress-making system." Sunday was a real rainy day. Dec. 5. Wednesday. Aurie went to Humboldt today and bought a red worsted dress for me. She cut it out this afternoon. She is going to trim it with dark blue ribbon velvet. We backed out of having the "Library Association" to meet at the supper at Mr. J. E. Campbell's Friday night. Thought we were not well enough prepared. Mr. Cole Gillespie came to the school-house after Miss Effie today at noon. Her cousin, Mrs. Chippie Penn, is very low with Pneumonia. Mr. Dougan and Dee Balantine helped Pa kill hogs today. He killed only two. Dec. 8, 1894. Saturday. Yesterday was a real rainy day. Miss Emma Mobley spent the day at school with us. Mr. Hess turned out school at recess. Clayton Powell wanted to go home at noon but Prof. wouldn't consent. Page 67 Then after a while, Mr. Hess told the school that "One of the boys had been begging for the last two or three hours to go home to shave." We had a very bad night for the supper last night. Tolerably late yesterday afternoon Altie Prince came with a note from Mr. Hamo requesting Pearl's company to the supper. She sent him a favorable reply. So they went. Eugene and I went horseback. We both rode Emma Lee. Aurie finished up my red dress so I wore that. On account of the very bad night, there was not a very large crowd there. Mr. Zach Hess brought Miss Hunt and Miss Anna Dew from Trenton. Misses Florence Robertson and Florence Mobley came from Trenton also. Warner Dunlap met Miss Robertson at the train, and Mr. Willis Bennett met Miss Florence Mobley. Tom Ing escorted Anna Bennett to the supper. Cary Hardison went with Anna Bennett to the table, Tom Ing with me, and Bob Fitzgerald with Pearl. Clayton Powell went with Erma Mobley to the table. After the supper, we played "Take home what you borrowed" and "Plate." The little folks got up a game of "Snap" in the hall. The rain kept us there longer than we bargained for. It was nearly twelve when we got home. Mr. Campbell said they made seven dollars. Mr. Campbell bought an organ and a buggy at the Hockaday sale the other day. Buddie, Minnie and Lottie Hazel came down Wednesday. They spent Thursday night with us and went back home this morning. Johnnie and Mattie Barnett came and sat until bedtime Thursday night. Dec. 9, 1894. Sunday. Oh, this is a cloudy day. Eugene went to Sunday School. Pa and Pearl went to Eldad horse-back. Aurie and I went over to Bessie's and went in the wagon with them to Oak Grove. Ella Blankenship went with them also. Aurie and I took dinner over there and got back home about three o'clock. Hamlet Powell came home with Eugene from Sunday School. Ralph and Earl Powell came and spent the afternoon. I got a book and sat down tso have a good quiet evening's reading, as I thought, when Mr. Hamo and Gay Campbell drove up. Of course, I was delighted to see my dear little school-mate Gay, so we all spent a very pleasant afternoon in conversation. They left tolerably early, as they had to go to Mr. Bennett's after Mamie, who went home with Anna from Sunday School. Eugene went home with the little Powell boys to stay all night. It has turned a great deal colder, and someone had predicted that it will snow. Dec. 10, 1894. Monday. This has been a very rainy day. Eugene and I went to school. Anna Bennett and Clayton Powell got to school very late this morning, so I had to recite the Latin lesson all by myself. Dec. 11. Tuesday. A beautiful day. Miss Emma Mobley spent the day with us at school today. As Friday night was such a bad night, they decided to have the "supper" over at Mr. J. E. Campbell's tonight. Mr. Hess is not at all in favor of the school attending "suppers' on a night during the week, but he said he would have to let them go this time, if their parents begged and pleaded with them to go. Anna Bennett said she was going to get her parents to beg for her, for she is very anxious to go. I think most of the scholars are anticipating a great time. Aurie went to Humboldt today to finish taking lessons in dress-making and to het hers and Pearl's winter dresses. Page 68 Dec. 12. Wednesday. Eugene and I didn't attend the supper last night. They had a beautiful night for it, and a tolerably large crowd. They made six dollars and a half. Would have made more than they did Friday night, but they charged only fifteen cents a couple for all who were there Friday night. Miss Erma was with us at school again today. Pa has been helping Mr. Dougan work yesterday and today. Aurie returned from Humboldt this afternoon. She stayed with Cousin Mattie last night. Cousin John hasn't returned from Ark. yet, so Willie Campbell stayed with them last night. Aunt Pollie and Cousin Lillie Campbell came today on the twelve o'clock train, and walked up to Cousin Mattie's from the depot. Quite a long walk for Aunt Pollie. Cousin Mattie wasn't expecting them at all. They are going to stay a month. Aurie got a letter from Alice Bledsoe, who has moved to Texas, today. They are very much pleased with their new home. Now, for a little account of the shopping that Aurie did. She bought a dark blue "Ducking" dress and an indigo calico, with a small white dot in it, for Pearl. A dark grey flannel dress for herself, and red ribbon velvet to trim it with. And a calico dress for me. She found it rather unhandy to bring all of them out from town horse-back. Dec. 13, 1894. Thursday. A cloudy day. Bessie came over and spent the day and made a dress for herself. Pearl and Aurie washed clothes, scoured the dining room and kitchen and made Pearl's calico dress. Don't you think they deserve credit? Pearl went to Bessie's yesterday and John and Vesta came home with her and stayed all night. Erma Mobley was at school again today. I have fallen in love with her; think she is one of the sweetest girls I nearly ever met. She is going to move to Missouri next week. Dee Balentine helped Pa work today. Dec. 15, 1894. Saturday. Yesterday Prof. Hess hurried through with his school- work, turned out at one o'clock. They were killing hogs at his house, and he wanted to be there to superintend it. Mrs. Simpson spent the day with us. I sewed a little on my new calico dress. I wrote to Cousin Susie Booth. Aurie cut Pearl's "ducking" dress. Pa and Eugene went to Trenton to mill this morning. They carried the buggy wheel to Fruitland to be mended. Eugene bought a hat and a pair of pants for himself. They had the five gallon coal oil can re-filled at Trenton and in coming home it got broken some way, and leaked out a right smart. We had to put it all in jars. Dec. 17. Monday. Yesterday we children went to Sunday School and preaching at New Shiloh. In the afternoon Pearl and Eugene went over to Mr. Scruggs' on Heck and the sorrel colt. Eugene stayed there and Annie O'Conner went with Pearl over to see Mrs. Harper, who was very low with Pneumonia. Pearl rode the sorrel colt; 'twas the first time a woman was ever on his back. They concluded they would stay and sit up that night, so Eugene brought the horses home. Mrs. Nannie Hockaday, Miss Mollie Barnett, Annie and Pearl sat up with her. She died about ten o'clock last night. ________________________ Aunt Pollie - Polly Ann Mayfield, dau. of Elias Mayfield, married ________ Campbell and went to Mattoon, Ill. She came to visit her daughter Mattie. Cousin Lillie Campbell - dau. of Polly Ann ( Mayfield ) Campbell and sister of Mattie Campbell Page 69 Jodie Harper, who is in Texas, did not know that she was dangerous, so he didn't come home. She was buried at Eldad about two o'clock today. We extend our hartiest sympathies to the bereaved family. We haven't a very full school now. A great many of the boys have stopped to work to make a little Christmas money. Dec. 18, 1894. Tuesday. Aunt Pollie and Cousin Lillie Campbell came this morning. Johnnie Campbell brought them from Humboldt in a buggy, then he went back this afternoon. I came home from school at noon to see them. Bessie came and spent the evening with us. When Eugene got back from school, he said that Mr. Hess was uneasy for fear there would be an elopement. He said Clayton Powell went to town yesterday and bought him a new suit, and I came home very hurriedly today at noon and that looked very suspicious. And James O'Connor stayed away from school only one day before he married! Dec. 19, 1894. Wednesday. Eugene stayed at home from school today, but I went. Bessie spent the day over here. Aunt Pollie, Cousin Lillie and Pearl went home with her to stay all night. Pa carried the buggy to Fruitland yesterday to have it mended. Night before last three robbers broke in Sharp's store at Humboldt. They got in the cellar and bored holes up through the floor of the store and cut out a place large enough to crawl through. Then two went up into the store and the other one stayed down there to watch. They got them a fine suit of clothes apiece, shoes, etc., and then they were fixing to blow up the money safe with dynamite, when the night-watch, Mr. Easlie Blakemore, caught them. The one outside made his escape, but he caught and imprisoned the other two. Two men stayed in the school-house last night, but did no mischief except prize the piano open and scratched it a little in so doing. Dec. 20, 1894. Thursday. Prof. gave a very short recess and hurried through with the lessons and dismissed school about one o'clock today. Eugene and I went to Bessie's, as all the others were there. Pa brought us all home in the wagon. Alice Woods came and borrowed the sausage mill. Dec. 21, 1894. Friday. Pearl and Cousin Lillie went down to see Mrs. Underwood and Mrs. Swim today. Mr. Hess had oral review in a few of the studies; Mr. Senter's little scholars spoke. The Library Associa-tion were to get up a paper. Some were to write locals, etc., and others were left to select their own subjects. No one came up with their part except Anna Bennett. She wrote about the "State of the Pupils of this School Twenty Years Hence." It was quite amusing. They moved the piano in that room and had lots of nice music. Three weeks ago, Prof. Hess said he would give the one who had improved most in writing between that time and this, a copy-book, pen and ink. We had the contest today. Miss Effie Gillespie and Mr. Senter were the judges. Miss Katie Dunlap received the prize. We got home from school a little after twelve o'clock. Mr. Hess brought a number of keys this morning, in order that he might get one to fit the school house door. He nailed down the windows and locked the doors. Mr. Hess and family expect to start for Memphis tomorrow to spend nearly a week. Page 70 Dec. 22, 1894. Saturday. Aurie, Eugene and I went over to Bessie's yesterday evening and Mr. Dougan went with us to a concert at Edison. It was very nice. They had several negro pieces. "The Train Tomorrow" was the name of one of the dialogues. Bessie and family spent the night with us last night. I have been having the tooth-ache a right smart here lately, so I went to Humboldt with Mr. Dougan this morning and got Dr. Barnett to extract it for me. I bought a few oranges and a little candy. Johnnie Campbell came after Aunt Pollie and Cousin Lillie this morning and carried them back to Cousin Mattie's. Pa brought the buggy home from Fruitland this afternoon. Dec. 24. Monday. Pearl, Eugene and I went to Sunday School yesterday. Prof. Geo. Campbell has returned from Nashville and was present. Andrew Bennett came home Saturday, but was not at Sunday School. Nell Coleman and Willie Dougan came yesterday afternoon. Mr. Jno. McCutchen came last night and went with Aurie to prayer-meeting at Mr. Dock Bennett's. Mr. Dougan and Willie went to mill at Trenton today. Bessie and the children spent the day with us. Jno. McCutchen and Aurie, Will Dougan and Pearl have gone to a Christmas tree at Edison tonight. Dec. 26. Wednesday. Yesterday was Christmas Day. Bessie and family and Willie Dougan spent the day with us. Pa and Pearl went down to Cousin Mattie's to see Aunt Pollie and Cousin Lillie yesterday evening and stayed all night. Bessie's folks all stayed with us while they were gone. Aurie, Eugene and I attended a party at Mr. Willis Bennett's last night. There was not a very large crowd, just enough to enjoy themselves. Florence Mobley of Trenton was there. Andrew's teacher from Bethel Springs was there, but I did not form his acquaintance. I got acquainted with Mr. Sam Savage, who is spending his Christmas in this community. We played "Cross-question," "Barn-yard," "Rats," "Snap' and "Take home what you borrowed." I had a very nice time. It has been snowing nearly all day today. The ground is covered. Pearl and Pa returned from Humboldt today about noon. They had a very enjoyable visit. Santa Claus brought Ralph Dougan a little pop- gun, and all three of the children a little horse apiece. Other things besides, but they brought these over to our house with them to play with. They seem to have lots of fun. Dec. 28, 1894. Friday. Yesterday was a very cold, snowy, disagreeable day. Bessie and family went home yesterday morning. Today has been a beautiful day, but very cold. The snow didn't melt any. Pa and Aurie talked of going down to Eaton, but concluded they would rather have a warmer day to ride the distance of twenty miles. I think that was a very wise conclusion. Messers. Clarance and James Stewart came this afternoon. There is to be a party at Mr. Bob Barnett's tonight, but it is too cold for us to go. Dec. 30, 1894. Sunday. Pearl and I went to Humboldt yesterday to see Aunt Pollie and Cousin Lillie. They were at Mr. Jim Campbell's spending the day, so we went on up there. Had a very pleasant day. They got a letter from Cousin Mary the other day saying that Cousin John Campbell of Kansas would be there next Monday, and for Cousin Lillie to come home without fail beore that time. ___________________ Cousin Mary, Cousin John Campbell - children of Pollie ( Mayfield ) Campbell Page 71 So Aunt Pollie and Cousin Lillie started for home last night on the two o'clock train. If Pearl and I hadn't gone to Humboldt yesterday, we would have missed seeing Aunt Pollie again. Pearl, Aurie, Eugene and I went to Sunday School this morning. This is the last Sunday of 1894. They have changed the Sunday School literature for next year. Instead of the Union lesson papers, they have denominational quarterlys. This was the day for re-electing officers, but they decided to keep the same officers for the ensuing year. Prof. George Campbell was at Sunday School, and bade us all good-bye. He will return to his school in Nashville tomorrow. Mary Dunlap was there bidding her friends adieu, for a short while. She will start for her school in Jackson in the morning. Elsie spent her Christmas in the City of Nashville this year. I got a very sweet and interesting letter from her yesterday. Willie Campbell came this evening. Mr. Jno. McCutchen came this afternoon and will sit ( with Aurie ) until bed-time tonight, I suppose, as it is about nine o'clock now and he is still here. They had a party at Mr. J. E. Campbell's last night, but we didn't hear anything of it until this morning at Sunday School. I don't much want to start back to school in the morning for I haven't had enough Christmas yet. Oh my! Dec. 31, 1894. Monday. This is the last day of the year 1894. As I look back over the year that is now drawing to a close, the question presents its-self to my mind, How much wiser and better am I than I was one year ago? Have I improved my time and golden opportunities as I should have done? Alas! I fear not, and resolve to try to do better the coming year. After a week's holiday, we went back to school this morning to resume our studies. Pa went over and helped Mr. Dougan kill hogs today. Aurie and Pearl paid Mrs. Simpson a short call this afternoon. Pearl and Aurie took the lounge out of the family room and put it in the dining room. They moved the old bureau into the family room and washed the floor off right nice. The snow hasn't all melted off yet. Mattie Fitzgerald is right sick. May Bennett is sick also. There is going to be a party at Mr. Fitzgerald's tomorrow night, given in honor of Andrew Bennett. Jan. 1, 1895. Tuesday. This is a cloudy day, and tolerably cold. We had one new scholar today, Mr. Earnest Stewart. He is in the eighth grade. Pa and Aurie have gone to Bessie's to spent the night. Eugene and I did not go to the party tonight, as Pa doesn't approve of party-going during school-nights. Jan. 2, 1895. Wednesday. To our great surprise, we arose this morning and found the ground covered with snow and it was still snowing. Guess the snow is about six inches deep. We didn't have a very full school today. Mr. Hess gave a big lecture on going to parties, while attending school. I was not guilty that time. Aurie is over at Bessie's yet. Pa came home this morning. Jan. 3, 1895. Thursday. Eugene and I went to school. Mr. Dougan brought Aurie home this morning. Pa and Mr. Dougan went down in the river bottom to look for our colts this evening, but they could not find them. Pa went to Fruitland. Aurie got a letter from Cousin Vick. She said they are going to move to Brazil next week. Page 72 Jan. 4, 1895. Friday. This is a cloudy, cold day. Miss Florence Mobley came by here this morning and got Pearl to go with her to Enterprize to see if she could get an Elocution class. She got the promise of four pupils. As they came back, Pearl stopped at Mrs. Metie Stallings and spent the afternoon. Pa and Aurie started for Eaton this morning. They wanted to go to see Cousin Vick once more before they moved away from the old home-stead. Mr. Hess has very bad sore eyes. They troubled him so, he did not hear all the lessons today. We got home from school about two o'clock. Eugene and Lonzie hauled some wood this afternoon. Mattie Fitzgerald is still sick. She hasn't been at all this week. Jan. 6, 1895. Sunday. Yesterday was a cloudy, bad day. Mattie and Alice Woods came yesterday morning and brought the sausage grinder home. They stayed until after dinner. Pearl, Eugene and I stayed all night at Bessie's Friday night. I went to see Mattie Fitzgerald Saturday afternoon. She was able to be up, and Ira was sick. He had a chill. Pearl, Eugene and I went to Sunday School. There was no preaching. Bro. Spencer didn't get there. Bessie and family stayed with us last night. Pa and Aurie got home this afternoon. They took dinner at Bessie's. They say they had a very nice time. Jan. 7, 1895. Monday. Eugene and I went to school. Mr. Hess has sore eyes so bad that he is not able to teach. So Mr. Senter took charge of his room today, and I taught in Mr. Senter's room until noon. Clayton Powell taught in there in the evening. This is a very cloudy day. Jan. 9. Wednesday. Eugene and I went to school. Anna Bennett and I did not go to school yesterday. We thought Mr. Hess wouldn't be there; but he went. Dr. Davis came yesterday evening. Jan. 11, 1895. Friday. This has been a beautifully clear day, but cold. It snowed yesterday morning, about two inches deep; cleared off by noon and a good deal of the snow melted off in the evening. Mrs. Mary Nelson ( nee Stallings ) was very badly burned yesterday, but I haven't learned particulars. Pa went to the river bottom to hunt for his colts today, but found no trace of them. We are studying Rhetoric now. Jan. 21, 1895. Monday. A beautiful day. I had a very severe cold all last week, came home from school Monday at noon and wasn't able sto go back until Friday. I haven't gotten well yet. Have a right bad sore throat; didn't go to school today. Willie Campbell of Humboldt came about ten or eleven o'clock and stayed the rest of the day with us. Pa went to Humboldt and about today to try to collect some debts, but had no success. Pearl, Eugene and I stayed at Bessie's Saturday night. Pearl wanted to see a Kindergarten teacher, so Mr. Dougan went with her to Kenton Sunday morning. They went to Mr. Frank Dougan's Sunday; came back through Kenton Monday, and Pearl go to see the Kindergarten teacher and they came back on the seven o'clock train tonight. Pa met Pearl at the train. _________________________ Mr. Frank Dougan - brother of Samuel Pleasant Dougan Page 73 Jan. 23, 1895. Wednesday. Annie O'Conner spent the day with us. She came horseback, and as she was leaving, her horse ( a young colt ) reared up and threw her off. Her back was hurt, but not seriously, I hope. Aurie then took her home in the buggy, and Pa rode her horse. Mrs. Sallie Bass had four fat hogs stolen out of a pen night before last. They tracked them across fields and finally found them in the woods of Pa's field. Several negroes have been suspicioned and one has been arrested. Feb. 2, 1895. Saturday. This is a beautiful day. Yesterday was a very cloudy, cold day. It snowed last Sunday night and hadn't melted off much, when there came another snow on top of it yesterday. It commenced snowing yesterday afternoon and continued until after midnight last night. Will Campbell came yesterday afternoon about two o'clock. Eugene, Will, Pearl, Aurie and I went to the pond and had lots of fun skating on the ice. We concluded we would all go to the concert at Eldad if we could get Mr. Craig's sled to go in. So Eugene and Willie took Heck and went to see if they could get it. Mr. Craig thought best not to loan it; and we determined not to let that keep us from going, so Aurie, Willie, Eugene and I went horseback, ( regardless of the weather ). We wrapped up good and didn't get very cold. The concert was splendid and we felt well paid for going such a night. Aurie and Will went to Fruitland horse-back this afternoon, then Willie went home. Bessie and family are here tonight. Mr. Hess took sick last Wednesday afternoon and had to turn out school earlier than usual. He was not able to teach Thursday and Friday, so there was no school those two days. I pieced a little on my quilts. Feb. 8, 1895. Friday. This is a very cold day. I think yesterday was the coldest day we've had this winter. Mr. Hess hasn't been able to teach this week. Mr. A. H. Senter took charge of his room and Clayton Powell taught in Mr. Senter's room. We had two new scholars last Monday, Howard Bass and Edgar McHaney from Eldad. Their school closed Friday, so they started to High Hill. I haven't been to school any this week since Tuesday. I have been sewing a good deal on my quilts, and commenced taking Music lessons from Pearl Wednesday. Aurie is taking too. Feb. 16, 1895. Saturday. This has been a beautiful day. The snow has melted off a good deal today, for the first time in a long time. Snow has been on the ground three weeks. And we have had some cold weather too. It has been prophesied that there will be twenty-seven snows this winter. We are about to begin to believe now, as there has already been eleven. Pearl and I went to see Mr. Walter Hess last Sunday eve. He is better now. Pearl and Aurie went to Humboldt yesterday evening and stayed all night with Cousin Mattie Campbell, who is right sick. Cousin Sam Waddill is sick. Sam Hale, who had been sick about two weeks, died last night about seven o'clock. He has Eryesiphelas, Swamp Fever and one or two other diseases. Cousin Billie Hale is very low. Vale, dear Journal.
