This file was contributed for use in the USGenWeb Archives by: Sarah Hutcherson ============================================================================== THE COURIER-CHRONICLE VOLUME XXIII No 14 FRIDAY APRIL 8,1921 HUMBOLDT,TENNESSEE ================================================================ LOCAL NEWS--Thomas FREEMAN & Ilene JONES were married in Humboldt late Saturday at the home of Mr.& Mrs.Murray WADE.He is the son of O.B.FREEMAN,of this city.She is the daughter of Mr.& Mrs.Alex JONES,of this city. --J.F.HEFLEY,aged 75 years,died at his home here last Thursday.Interment in Oakland Cemetery.His widow and seven children-three daughters;Mrs.John STEWART, Mrs.V.V.HARRIS and Miss Margaret HEFLEY of Okla City; and four sons,Frank of New Orleans, Clark of Helena,AR, Thomas of Ardmore,OK, and Henry of this city,survive him,all of whom ,except Mrs.STEWART,attended the funeral. --County Court was in session here Monday,and some important business was transacted.Mrs.Mercer W.TAYLOR was appointed Register to fill the unexpired term of her husband,M.W.TAYLOR,who has been missing from this city since January 1st. --Mrs.Mary Louis COPELAND is visiting her brother,W.G.CONNER. --Dr.A.B.JONES,of Jackson,is visiting his daughter,Mrs.W.W.HERRON. --Mrs.JOURNEY,of Washington,D.C.,is visiting her mother,Mrs.J.W.RAMSEY,who has been ill several weeks. --Robert CRAFTON visited his sister,Mrs.R.E.FREEMAN last week. --Miss Virginia HASTE has returned to her home in Memphis after a visit to her aunt,Mrs.Charlie PYBASS. --Mrs.W.B.MILLS,of Memphis,is visiting her sister,Mrs.Marc ANTHONY. WEEK’S DOINGS OF MEDINA PEOPLE--Miss Mattie Lou RUNIONS,of Oakwood,is guest of her aunt,Mrs.D.G.BOYD. --Mr.Jerre HARDISON,of Ridgely,is visiting his daughter,Mrs.Tessie ANDREWS. --The funeral service of Mr.R.R.BOON was conducted Wednesday morning by Rev.HICKS at the Cumberland Church,interment in Hope Hill Cemetery.His wife,two sons,and one brother survive him. COOPER ROE KILLED BY SHERIFF MAINORD--Cooper ROE was killed by Sheriff MAINORD,of Madison County Thursday morning.This news came by telephone about noon.ROE resisted arrest and started on the Sheriff with a razor when the officer fired the fatal shot.It was also stated that ROE attempted to slash his wife with the razor when the officer came up.This killing followed a sensational shooting here Monday morning when ROE went to the home of Jim DAVIS and filled his body with shot.DAVIS was a brother-in-law of ROE’s wife,who was making her home there since an estrangement with her husband some time ago.Mr.DAVIS,while pretty badly peppered with shot is said to be recovering.Cooper ROE was a son of Mr.J.W.ROE,of this city,and was reared here. INTERESTING NEWS FROM GIBSON--Earl G.WARMATH,son of Mr.& Mrs.J.T.WARMATH,and Miss Elizabeth BROWN,daughter of Mr.& Mrs.Charles BROWN,of Jackson,TN were married at the First Baptist Church at Jackson Wednesday at high noon. --Mrs.Martha HARDEN,84 years,died Thursday night at the home of her daughter, Mrs.J.W.BOLERJACK, after a short illness of erysipelas. She leaves the one daughter; five sons,John of Guthrie,KY, James of Caruthersville, MO, Ed of Jackson, Joe of Memphis, and Ulie of Gibson.Services were held at Double Springs were the body was laid to rest beside her husband, A.R.HARDIN. --O.M.FLY received a telegram Monday from John TILLMAN at Cooper, TX announcing the death of Mrs. TILLMAN. --J.E.FOREN,wife,and son,Tyree,attended the funeral of Mr.Bob FOREN at Davidson’s Chapel Tuesday. CROCKETT COUNTY NEWS FROM ALAMO--Mrs.Aggie MORRIS,who for several years has made her home here with her son,Mr.C.H.MORRIS,left Sunday for Memphis,where she will make her future home. --Miss Callie HUGLEY,after several weeks visiting her sister,Mrs.S.A.RONK, has returned to her home in Kenton. --The sad news of the death of Jeff THOMPSON of St.Louis was received last Friday.His mother,Mrs.Edgar THOMPSON left immediately to attend the funeral. ITEMS OF INTEREST FROM GADSDEN--Mrs.Robert JONES of Yorkville,is a guest in the home of her brother,Henry EDWARDS and wife. --Mrs.Wilson WILLIAMS spent last week with her son,Will BROWN,near town. --Misses Anna & Lida,daughters of John TURNER,of District #11,are guests of their aunt,Mrs.Verna JONES. --Mrs.Minnie REEVES visited her sister,Mrs.Genie CRADDOCK,near Union Grove last Wednesday. --Orris COX,popular teacher of Cross Roads school,was with his brother,E.B.COX,Friday night and attended school exercises. --The children,relatives and friends of Mr.Wilson WILLIAMS met last Sunday to celebrate his 91st birthday.For many years this has been their custom and each occasion they think will be the last.He is now quite feeble and perhaps not many more reunions will be his to enjoy. DAVIDSON CHAPEL--Mrs.John HASSELL,of Trenton,has been at the sick bed of her sister,Mrs.McLEAN since last Thursday. --After an illness of some time,Mr.Rob FOREN died Nonday morning.His remains were buried in Davidson Chapel Cemetery Tuesday.Services were conducted by his pastor,Rev.HUCKABA,of Laneview.He was a good Christian man,a member of the Salem Baptist Church. He leaves aged parents;two brothers;one sister;a wife and seven children. LOCAL HAPPENINGS IN AND ABOUT TOWN--Mr.W.H.KEATHLEY attended the funeral of his aunt,Mrs.W.W.SWINK at Kenton Wednesday. --Messrs.O.C.SHARP & T.Q.WARMATH attended the funeral of Mrs.Sallie JONES,which occurred at the Raines graveyard Tuesday. COXVILLE R.F.D.#10 CROCKETT COUNTY--Miss Rachel CRADDOCK,high school girl of Humboldt,accompanied by her aunt,Gracie Dean COX home,and spent last week with her. --Mr.Joe McLEARY,a prominent citizen of District #2 was a visitor in the home of his nephew,J.C.COX and family at Cox’s Chapel last Sunday. --Ray McLOTHLIN,of the Center Church community who,while in a state of mental depression a few days ago,attempted to end his life,was carried to the insane asylum one day last week. --Miss Ola Mae CRADDOCK,of Humboldt,who completed her first term of school last week at Warren’s Grove and is now enjoying a visit in the home of her grandparents,Mr.& Mrs.J.R.COX,of this place. BARNETT. --Mrs.McGILL,of Philadelphia,is visiting her brother,Judge H.V.HOLMES. UNION CITY,TN APRIL 14--Brooding over business difficulties,following assignment Monday of the Dahnke-Walker Miling Company,in addition to personal assignment,George DAHNKE,56 years,who was one of the wealthiest men in Tennessee,drank carbolic acid at 6 o’clock yesterday afternoon and died four hours later.He was born in Murphysboro,IL.He leaves his wife,seven children and a brother. COXVILLE ITEMS, R.F.D.#10 CROCKETT COUNTY--Walter NIX has a little girl right sick with pneumonia. --Mr.& Mrs.Roy QUINN,of the Dr.MEEKS farm,have a new girl at their home. --Mr.& Mrs.Bud MEDLIN spent Sunday visiting their brother-in-law and wife,Mr.& Mrs.Neuma HOPPER of Salem. --Mesdames W.A.THOMAS & C.E.HUDGINS visited Miss Sallie PATTERSON Monday.Aunt Sack as she is known,has been in very poor health for a long time and her two aged brothers,Berry and Zan are also very feeble. --Mrs.Paralee BETTS,after spending last week with her son and wife,Mr.& Mrs.Dee BETTS,at Humboldt,is now in the home of her daughter,Mrs.Will REASONS,who is on the sick list. INTERESTING NEWS FROM GIBSON--Mr.& Mrs.Lonnie HALE received a message from Carlsbad,NM Monday stating that their son,Clyde,was dying.The young man had been in low state of health for several years and had gone there to try to regain his health.He was about 23 years old. --BORN to Mr.& Mrs.Durley CROCKER,a fine boy. CROCKETT COUNTY NEWS FROM ALAMO--Mrs.Sterling PERMENTER and children,of Memphis are visiting relatives and friends here this week. --The news was received here Sunday morning of the death of little Charles Edward REED,son of Dr.& Mrs.M.S.REED,which sad event occurred in Memphis.His remains were carried to Cotton Plant,AR for interment. NEWS FROM ROUTE #5--Mr.A.J.HYDE has just received a telegram that his son,Clyde,who has been in AZ for his health is dead. WEEK’S DOINGS OF MEDINA PEOPLE--Mr.& Mrs.J.H.MOUNT have returned from a visit to their daughter,Mrs.C.L.LWEELLYN at Nashville. --Misses Ruth & Mary LASSITER,of Trenton,are guests of their aunt,Mrs.Minnie LEWIS,west of town,on Jackson Road. --J.G.MARRS,of Dyer,spent several days with his son,Rev.O.A.PMARRS and family at the Methodist parsonage. LOCAL HAPPENINGS IN AND ABOUT TOWN--Mr.& Mrs.W.J.DARETY,of the Zion neighborhood received a telegram Monday stating that the remains of their son,John H.DARETY,who was killed in France,had reached the United States and would be forwared home for burial. --The body of George GARRETT,who was killed in action in the great battle of Ypres,in France,has reached home and will be buried in Rose Hill Cemetery Sunday at 2 p.m.ORRIN C.KOLWYK Post of the American Legion will attend the funeral in a body. INTERESTING ITEMS FROM GADSDEN--Mr.& Mrs.J.H.MURCHISON,of Maury City,were here at the funeral of their great aunt,Mrs.Sallie JONES,last Tuesday. --Mrs.W.O.WILLIAMS has her sister,Miss Mary Lou LEE,of Haywood County as her guest. --Mr.& Mrs.ROSAMON,of Ripley,MS were guests last week with his mother,Mrs.J.W.ROSAMON. --Clyde RICHARDSON is about the happiest man in Gadsden,just because its a boy. --Dr.& Mrs Raymond HARRIS and Mrs.J.H.HARRIS,of Bells,came up to the funeral of their aunt,Mrs.Sallie JONES last Tuesday. --Mrs.Silas EMISON and children, Don Malcolm and Ruth, spent last Sunday with her mother,Mrs.Abe TAYLOR. --On last Tuesday,the remains of Mrs.Sallie JONES were brought here from Jackson where she died and given burial in Raines Cemetery.Mrs.JONES formerly resided in this community,but had for a number of years made a home with her daughter,Mrs.J.T.WARREN in Jackson.Besides Mrs.WARREN;three sons,Frank,Oscar and Walter survive. SOCIETY--On last Thursday evening Miss Trula GALLION and Hugh NEILSON were married in the home of Mr.& Mrs.C.H.FERRELL on Osborne Street.The bride is a neice of Capt.FERRELL and had lived here with them for some years.The groom is the son of Mrs.John T.BROWN,was reared in Humboldt.He served in the army in France. --Mrs.E.W.HAWKS returned Wednesday from Memphis,where she has been at the bedside of her sister,Mrs.WADE,of Brazil,who underwent an operation at a local hospital Monday. --Miss Emma MATTHEWS left Sunday for Coldwater,KY to visit her sister, Mrs.F.C.CARNELL,and be at the bedside of her little neice, who has been quite sick.
