THE COURIER-CHRONICLE HUMBOLDT,TENNESSEE FRIDAY JANUARY 4,1924 A PRETTY HOME WEDDING..was solemnized at the home of Mr.& Mrs.VIRGIL PINKSTON Sunday,Dec.23rd when Miss NELL WADE of Bells became the bride of ANDREW EVANS of Maury City.F.L.PAISLEY officiating. THE COURIER-CHRONICLE HUMBOLDT,TENNESSEE FRIDAY JANUARY 4,1924 THE DEAD..DAVID E.LOVE,age 66 years,died at his home in Humboldt Friday,after an illness of long duration and his remains were buried in Rose Hill Cemetery morning.Funeral Services were held at the home.He is survived by his wife; four children,Mrs.C.P.CRAIG,of Meridian,Mrs.MAMIE LUCKY and BARNEY LOVE of this city,and FRED M.LOVE of Memphis. THE COURIER-CHRONICLE HUMBOLDT,TENNESSEE FRIDAY JANUARY 4,1924 MAN KILLS WIFE AND SUICIDES..JIM TORRANCE,25,shot and instantly killed his wife and then ended his own life with a pistol shot Monday night.The tragedy occurred at the home of R.A.McCOLLUM,father of the dead woman and uncle of the suicide.The tragedy is said to be a result of a quarrell between TORRANCE and his wife had a few days before the killing and which resulted in MRS.TORRENCE returning to the home of her father,who lives on the farm on Mr.E.L.NELSON,about a mile east of town.According to reports,TORRENCE went to the McCULLOM home early in the night and demanded that his wife return home with him.Upon her refusal to do so,the infuriated man drew a pistol from his pocket and shot her.The ball hit her face,just to one side of her nose,killing her almost instantly.He then fired at his father-in-law,but missed him.Then he turned the weapon on himself.It was not determinded whether the ball entered his ear or his mouth,wounds showing on both,but he only lived about ten minutes after he was shot.TORRANCE and his wife are survived by two children,both under five years of age.After a funeral service conducted by Revs.MAXEDON & HOPE,at the Central Avenue Christian Church,both were buried in one grave in Rose Hill Cemetery.TORRENCE was the son of Mr.McCOLLUM's sister and therefore a first cousin of his wife. THE COURIER-CHRONICLE HUMBOLDT,TENNESSEE FRIDAY JANUARY 4,1924 IN MEMORY OF..On Saturday,Dec.8th,just past the hour of mid-night the Death Angel entered the home of Mr.B.A.MATTHEWS and claimed for it's victim the husband and father of the home.Mr.MATTHEWS was born in Weakley County Feb.8th,1855.He came to Crockett county at the age of eighteen years and had lived there until the time of his death.In Jan.1896 he was married to Miss LULA WILLOUGHBY.To this union were born seven children,all of whom with their mother survive him.The funeral was held at the family home Sunday afternoon,conducted by Rev.MORELOCK of Jackson.The body was laid to reat in Oakhill Cemetery. THE COURIER-CHRONICLE HUMBOLDT,TENNESSEE FRIDAY JANUARY 4,1924 IN MEMORY..R.L.DICKSON,who on December 23rd,1923,after a few days suffering,passed from this life to the Great Beyond.He had long been a sufferer from heart trouble and that with complications caused his death.Besides his wife he leaves three sisters,Mrs.G.F.RUSSELL,Misses EVA & JURIAH DICKSON of Dyer.Funeral services were held at his home on 17th avenue Monday afternoon,after which the remains were carried to the home of relatives in Dyer,services were held in his home church Tuesday and then he was placed beside those who had gone before. THE COURIER-CHRONICLE HUMBOLDT,TENNESSEE FRIDAY JANUARY 4,1924 ITEMS OF INTEREST FROM GADSDEN..Mrs.M.BARRETT spent the holidays in Nashville with her daughter,Mrs.JOE WALDING. Gadsden had a destructive fire Friday night when the KINCAID & AGEE garage burned.The Electric Light Plant and Grist Mill was also destroyed.Mr.KINCAID lost a good car. Mrs.GEORGE TODD is in Mobile,Ala.,at the bedside of her son-in-law,Mr.SWABLE,who is seriously ill.While her mother is away,Mrs.ETHEL KINCAID of Memphis is with her father,G.E.TODD. Miss RUTH SPRAGGINS and CARL BADGETT were married in Jackson Christmas Day and will make their home at Maury Junction. THE COURIER-CHRONICLE HUMBOLDT,TENNESSEE FRIDAY JANUARY 4,1924 COXVILLE ITEMS..Those who visited in these parts from out of the neighborhood and a distance during the holidays were:Mr.& Mrs.LEVAN JAMES of Fort Worth,Texas,visited his parents,the JOHN JAMES; ELMER & ERNEST HUTCHISON of knoxville,visited their cousins,FRANK & REGGIE COX and DOUGLAS JAMES; PAUL BUTTS of Paris visited his cousin,BYRON COX; Mr.& Mrs.E.P.MITCHELL of South Gadsden and Mr.& Mrs.J.O.COX of Edith,visited Mr.& Mrs.J.R.COX; and Mrs.AUSTIN MAJORS of Mo.,visited snd remains with her sister,Mrs.QUINN,whose health is very wretched at present. G.F.RUSSELL of Dyer was here two days at his brother-in- law,R.L.DICKSON's bedside. ELMER BUTLER,18,had the deplorable misfortune on Christmas Day to get one of his arms badly wounded by a gun shot.He was out hunting with a companion when he accidently exploded his gun,the charge taking effect in the wrist.BUTLER'S companion was GEORGE HOPPER,who had the misfortune to lose one of his hands about a year ago from an accidental discharge of his gun when returning from a hunt. BOYD STEPHENS,business man of Trenton and Miss MARY LETT,teacher of the Eldad schools were married during the Christmas holidays. The many friends of Mrs.G.T.SELLARS were greived to read the notice of her death in Baptist Memorial Hospital Sunday.Bro.SELLARS and GEORGE,JR.,have our sympathy. THE COURIER-CHRONICLE HUMBOLDT,TENNESSEE FRIDAY JANUARY 11,1924 CROCKETT COUNTY NEWS FROM ALAMO..A wire message was received last Wednesday by Miss GLADYS BOND of the Alamo school,announcing the death of her mother,MRS.BOND.MRS>BOND was in seemingly good health when her daughter left after spending the holidays at home in Thompson Station,where her remains will be interred.Miss BOND returned to her school the first of this week. THE COURIER-CHRONICLE HUMBOLDT,TENNESSEE FRIDAY JANUARY 11,1924 DIES AT MEDINA..MRS.IDA SHANE BOSWELL,age 62,died at her home in Medina Monday of this week.Funeral services were held at the Cumberland Presbyterian Church Tuesday,Rev.ROY JOHNS,the pastor,holding services and the remains were laid to rest in Centerville Cemetery.She leaves two daughters,Miss LOTTIE BOSWELL and Mrs.PAUL BELEW,both of Medina. THE COURIER-CHRONICLE HUMBOLDT,TENNESSEE FRIDAY JANUARY 18,1924 LOCAL HAPPENINGS IN AND ABOUT TOWN..It is reported that ANDREW COOK of West Station and brother,EUGENE COOK,of Lavenia,are in Trenton jail on a charge of attempted murder and rape.According to the story,the girl in the case,MARGARET OLIVER,daughter of Mr.& Mrs.D.W.OLIVER,of West Station,was drugged on the night in question,and almost died of the dose given her.She was taken to a hospital in Jackson for treatment and was only able to go home after eight days of desperate illness. THE COURIER-CHRONICLE HUMBOLDT,TENNESSEE FRIDAY JANUARY 25,1924 MISS TOLLEY DISCOVERED GREAT WEALTH..Miss JEAN TOLLEY,diving girl for the movies and native of Tennessee,in a recent dip off Nassau in the Bahama Islands,discovered an ancient treasure chest filled with doublooms lying on the bottom of the ocean,and now returns to New York $45,000 richer as a result of her discovery.Two-thirds of the value of the find was claimed by Miss TOLLEY under the law of Great Britian,which holds that part of discovered treasure shall go to the finder and the other third to the government.Miss TOLLEY said she was born in Milan,Tennessee,the daughter of the Rev.J.J.TOLLEY.She went to school in Nashville she said and later moved to Booneville,Ark.,with her father,who held a Methodist pastorate there.He died 15 years ago,she said.She is the daughter of Mrs.VIONA TOLLEY,formerly Miss VIONA PHILLIPS of Humboldt. THE COURIER-CHRONICLE HUMBOLDT,TENNESSEE FRIDAY JANUARY 25,1924 MRS.LUKIE JACKSON..wife of Mr.HALE JACKSON,died at her home on East Main street yesterday afternoon,after having been in a very low state of health for several years.She is survived by her husband and one sister,Mrs.A.Y.SIMMONS,and other relatives.She was about 74 years of age.Funeral services were held at the home by Rev.BRYANT,the remains buried in Rose Hill Cem. THE COURIER-CHRONICLE HUMBOLDT,TENNESSEE FRIDAY JANUARY 25,1924 MR.JACK BLEDSOE..farmer,died at his home near Oak Grove,east of Humboldt,Friday night about 12 o'clock,after a long illnes of cancer of the stomach.He is survived by his wife; eight children; one brother,BOSE BLEDSOE; two sisters,Mrs.E.M.McWHERTER and Mrs.McCLANAHAN of Humboldt.He was about 60 years of age.Funeral occurred under auspices of the Humboldt Lodge of Masons and the Rev.DAVIS,the remains buried in the Oak Grove Cemetery.
