Mrs.Alice BAXLEY died at the home of Mr.Alex FITZGERALD on Church Street last Sunday morning,after a long illness.Services were held Monday at Oakland Cemetery.Her husband preceded her to the grave just a few weeks ago.She is survived by one brother and a number of relatives.To show her love and devotion to God,she willed one thousand dollars to the Methodist Church. W.K.PIERCE,of near Eaton,and Miss Bertha OLIVER,of this city,were married at the home of Mr.& Mrs.H.N.FORREST Sunday afternoon. Cyrus P.MANUEL,of this city,and Miss Jettie Mai ROGERS of near Dyer,were married at the bride,s home on Tuesday afternoon.She is the daughter of Mr.& Mrs.T.ROGERS,of near Dyer.Mr.& Mrs.MANUEL will make Trenton their home. ---TWO ARRESTED ON ARSON CHARGE--- J.W.WILLIAMS and wife,Lona WILLIAMS,were arrested Tuesday,on a capias,charging them with arson. They are charged with sitting fire to a house occupied by them,and which burned some weeks ago.The property destroyed by the fire in question belonged to Mr.J.E.CAMPBELL and bore no insurance. ---MRS.CLARK PATTERSON BADLY BURNED--- Mrs.Clark PATTERSON was frightfully burned Wednesday morning about 1 o'clock and is now in quite a serious condition at her home in southeast Humboldt.The accident was the explosion of a lamp,which Mrs.PATTERSON was attempting to cast from the room,and which covered her with burning oil.The lamp had been left burning in the room,on account of the indisposition of Mr.PATTERSON,and she awoke in the night and found the flames had descended into the fount of the lamp.She picked up some articles of clothes to protect her hands,grasped the lamp and started to the door with it,when it bursted,scattering the burning oil over her face and clothing.She was badly burned about the face and body and friends are uneasy as to her condition. ---MILAN,TENN., MAY 10th--- Jack SMITH, bookkeeper for the Milan Banking Company and Miss Ione WILSON,daughter of Ransom WILSON,were married by Rev.E.C.BELL in Jackson,Tenn.They returned to Milan this morning.The groom is the only son of Ed SMITH,a prominent and successful lawyer of Gibson County. ---ITEMS OF INTEREST FROM GADSDEN--- Mrs.W.M.MORRIS,of Ripley,is visiting the home of her brother,J.D.PORTER. Mr.Herbert MIDYETT,of Dyersburg,was a pleasant visitor in Gibson Saturday. ---WEEKS DOINGS OF MEDINA PEOPLE--- to late for last weeks publication)The sudden death of Mr.William B.RAINES occurred Thursday morning and came as a shock to many friends and relatives.The funeral was conducted by Rev,R.L.MOBLEY at Hope Hill .Mr.RAINES was 53 years old and was unmarried.He is survived by his mother; three sisters; and two brothers. ---MEMORIAL OF MRS.AUGUSTUS GRAVES---At the home of her youngest daughter,surrounded by loved ones,on April 29th,1920,after "Sunset and evening star",came the one clear call for this servant of God.Mrs.GRAVES,nee Miss Annie VAUGHN,came to the Mt.Zion neighborhood in early girlhood,and here met and married Augustus GRAVES.They spent their entire married life in and near Mt.Zion and reared their large family of sons and daughters,nine of whom are living,to bear testtimony to the Christian influence of their beloved father and mother. ---SOCIETY--- Albert BUTLER and Ailene ADAMS were married last Saturday evening at 11 o'clock on the stage of the Mac-Taff Stock Company.The groom is the son of Mrs.J.C.BUTLER,the bride is the daughter of Mrs.W.E.KELTNER. ======================================================================================== THE COURIER-CHRONICLE FRIDAY VOLUME XXII No.21 HUMBOLDT,TENNESSEE MAY 21st,1920. ======================================================================================== ---LOCAL NEWS--- Louis (Lonnie) CAVANESS and RUBY SKILES were married last Sunday.He is a farmer in the Davidson Chapel community,the bride is the daughter of Mr.& Mrs.Kennie SKILES. ---DIES IN HOSPITAL--- H.J.DUFFEY,one of Humboldt's old and well-known citizens died in the Baptist Hospital,Memphis,Wednesday at 9:30 a.m.,following an operation which occurred about one week ago.he is survived by his wife; five sons; Emerson, Wesley, James, all of Humboldt, Walter and George,of Brownsville; five daughters: Mrs.Eldon HAWKS and Misses Flora & Mamie DUFFEY, all of Humboldt,and Mrs.WADE and Mrs. ROSE, of Brazil.There are also several grandchildren.He was about 71 years of age,and lived the greater part of his life in Crockett County and here in Humboldt.Interment in Rose Hill Cemetery. ---PASSES TO REWARD--- On Monday about 8:30 a.m.,Mr.W.H.McKNIGHT,Sr.,was called to his final reward.He was in his 84th year.He was surrounded by his family when death came. ROE, died at the family home om Mitchell Street Tuesday afternoon,May 25th,after being in a low state of health foe many months.In fact,she had been in Memphis and Nashville hospitals for a good deal of the time for the past two years.She was surrounded by her family when the end came.Services were conducted at the family residence;interment in Rose Hill Cemetery.She is survived by her husband,three sons and three daughters. FOSTER died at his home Tuesday at 3 a.m. after several weeks illness.Interment at Oakland Cemetery.He is survived by his wife and one daughter,Mrs.Harry JONES,of Memphis;one brother and two sisters to mourn his death. The remains of two of Gibson County's soldier boys reached here Mondaymorning at 4 a.m. from England,where they died about two years ago,and were interred in Oakland Cemetery in this city after a brief service at the graves by Rev.JENKINS. These two young men gave their lives for their country,having joined the Army about two years ago and getting as far as England.Mr.NELSON is survived by his wife and little daughter,Mackie,under two years of age,and his parents.Mr.HANNAH is survived by two sisters,Misses Mattie & Lina Mai HANNA,of this city. Rev.W.A. POWEL and wife are the proud parents of a fine girl. Ike BLAKEMORE,a well-known colored man died last week.Also the wife of the colored preacher (Baptist) died here last Friday.These colored people had many friends among the white people of this city. Mr.& Mrs.Eldon TAYLOR are the proud parents of a fine boy,born Saturday. ---TRIMBLE,TENN.--- Alvin BRYANT's little 7-year-old son,Farris,was accidently shot in the breast with a .22 calibre rifle in the hands of a playmate.He was rushed to a Dyersburg Hospital and operated on,the bullett was found in his back,it went almost thru him. At last report,he was resting well. --- NEWBERN,TENN.--- The body of Dan SKAGGS,26,arrived here over the Illinois Central railroad Friday and was buried in the Senter Cemetery near town.Rev.C.E. HUTCHINSON,of Newbern Baptist Church,conducted the funeral.Young SKAGGS was the first Newbern boy to fall victim in France,February 28th,1918.He enlisted with the aviation corps in Dallas,Texas in 1917.The casket was draped with a large U.S. flag and the burial ceremonies were under the direction of a number of ex-servicemen.He is survived by his mother,Mrs.J.M. SKAGGS;four sisters,Mrs.Ella REED of Virginia; Mrs.Myra DOZIER,of Gibson County; Miss Mary SKAGGS and Mrs.Lex MILAM,both of Tatumville and one brother,James SKAGGS,of Eaton,Tenn. ---FRIENDSHIP--- Mrs.Lawrence NEARN,of Floydsville community,south of this place,has received a telegram stating that the remains of her husband,a soldier of the World War,would arrive in New York in a few days and be brought to this county for burial.Mr.NEARN died of measles in London during the war. ---LEXINGTON, TENN.--- Dan M. IRVIN, aged inmate of the Madison County poorhouse,visiting here,jumped headlong from the second story window of the Lexington Courthouse,a distance of some 15 feet,killing himself on the brick walk below.Just before his fatal plunge,Mr.IRVIN spoke to Charlie TIMBERLAKE,negro janitor. Dan IRVIN is said to have inherited two fortunes. He was born and reared in Madison County,and after living in Jackson for years,where he built a handsome home, moved to Lexington and bought the Clifton Street Corner,where he built a beautiful home.Several years ago,he and his wife separated. ---DIES SUDDENLY--- Mrs.Mollie RUSSELL McGEE,widow of the late H.J.(Ted) McGEE,died in St.Joseph Hospital in Memphis Wednesday at 4 a.m.She is survived by son,Russell,of Memphis;and daughter,Mrs.Fred A. CUSHMAN,of Houston,Texas.she was reared in Humboldt and was married here to Ted McGEE about 28 years ago.After their marriage,they moved to Vicksburg,Miss.,after which they moved to Memphis.Mr.McGEE died but a short time ago,his remains were brought here for burial.Soon after her husband's death,she began making plans to return to her girlhood home but she did not live to carry out her dream.Interment will be beside her husband in Rose Hill Cemetery. ---LOCAL NEWS HAPPENINGS IN AND ABOUT TOWN--- Mr.Jake STRASBERG left Saturday night for Syracuse,N.Y.,where he was called on account of the death of his brother,Julius STRASBERG. The remains of James Mack NELSON,son of Mr.& Mrs.Robert NELSON,arrived here Sunday from New York,and were carried to Trenton Monday morning and interred in Oakland Cemetery.Mr.NELSON died in France of pneumonia. ---ITEMS OF INTEREST FROM GADSDEN--- Mrs.Denie YOUNG has gone to Fruitvale to spend the summar with her sister,Mrs.Robert GAGE. TODD,of Bells,were attendants at the THOMAS funeral at Salem. Miss Bessie DUNLAP and Mr.Laudell WILLIAMS were married last Saturday in Jackson,and left immediately for their home in New Mexico.She is the daughter of J.K. DUNLAP.He,who has made good as a civil engineer in the West,is a son of W.P. WILLIAMS.He came home to help celebrate his father's 81st birthday and decided he could take the backward journey alone. Mr.Eldridge THOMAS,a citizen of the Salem community,died Saturday morning,his remains interred Sunday at Salem Cemetery.He was 59 years of age,he will be greatly missed,especially by his afflicted wife. ---MILLIONAIRE VISITS OLD HOME--- Friendship,Tenn.--- J.C. HARDIN,of Burkburnett,Texas,is visiting relatives in the Friendship community.He was reared on a farm a few miles west of this place and went to Texas many years ago.The largest check drawn on the Wichita Falls First National Bank for income tax was drawn by Mr.HARDEN for $132,690.12,which was only a quarter payment.His entire income tax foe 1919 will be $530,760.45.Mr.HARDIN is a man of simple tastes and drove out in the country near here in a two-horse wagon,when he went to visit the scenes from his boyhood. ---HORACE ROGERS ROBERTS---is a man among men.Whst to have accomplished has been largely through his own energy and will power.He was born in Tennessee,not very far from where Old Hickory Jackson lived.He was reared on a farm,in Gibson County and knows all about hogs and hominey.when he was nearing manhood,he went to Nashville to start out in the battle of life.He married Miss Elizabeth FAIN,of Nashville and they have two fine children.(The Sun-Gainsville,Fla.) ---SOCIETY---Mr.& Mrs.T.N. J.W.T.NEELY,wife and son,F.L.NEELY,attended the funeral of Norman MASON at Jackson Wednesday. ***FACES A MURDER CHARGE*** Foster ROE,aged 27,son of a suburbun merchant,having a store in the vicinity of the West Tennessee experiment station,was arrested,a warrant charging him with the murder of Norman T. Miss Pauline SENTER left Tuesday for Philadelphia to reume her duties at the University Hospital.She was accompanied as fas as Cincinnati by her sister,Mrs.Joseph PETTIJOHN. Mrs.A.J.JOHNSON,who has been a guest of her parents,Mr.& Mrs.J.B.CULLEN,left Wednesday for her home in Star City,Ark.
