AT THE RECRUITING STATION--Two men have been accepted for enlistment in the Army: Thomas C.DOUGLAS of Lake County has enlisted for his fourth term of service,and John I.LADD,of Humboldt,who goes to the Infantry at San Antonio,Texas. UNION GROVE--Little James,three-year-old son of Mr.& Mrs.M.L.DUNLAP,while playing Sunday afternoon,let an old gate fall on him,which broke his leg between the hip and the knee. --James TAYLOR,grandson of Mr.& Mrs.E.J.MOORE,while playing with some friends Sunday afternoon,put a lighted fire cracker into an army shell that had powder in it.It exploded,tearing up his finger and inflicting painful wounds. --Hulon DUNLAP was kicked on the forehead last Tuesday by a calf cutting a gash that required several stitches. --Ernest DUNLAP had a miraculous escape from death Tuesday, when the horse he was riding fell catching him beneath it. NEWS NOTES FROM ELDAD--Mr.& Mrs.Luther HUNT have moved from Gibson to the home of her ? father, John HUNT. --Mrs.Dovie PRUETT and Miss Mary KOFFMAN spent the week-end with their mother,Mrs.I.J.KOFFMAN at Edison. LOCAL NEWS HAPPENINGS IN AND ABOUT TOWN--Ben HUMPHREYS of Uvalde, Texas is visiting his father,L.E.HUMPHREYS. --Robert RAINEY of Jackson spent Thanksgiving with his uncle and aunt Mr.& Mrs. R.L. DICKSON. --L.H. ODOM of Dallas,Texas spent Thanksgiving with his brother J.B.ODOM & wife. --The B.F. HAZELWOOD home just north of town burned at an early hour Monday morning, very little was saved. --Mr.James K.SUMPTER,age 69,died Tuesday at 8 a.m. at the home of J.H. BUCKNER, south of Humboldt. The remains were laid to rest at Bethel graveyard after services at the residence.He leaves one sister, Mrs.E.J. COPLIN,and a nephew, Dr.W.L. COPLIN of this city. --Mr.B.HIMELHOCH,who left Humboldt July 15th for Riga,Latvia,which is a country formerly a part of the Russian Empire,landed in New York Monday and arrived in Humboldt Thursday. He is bringing with him his sister’s four children and also his brother. BELLS,TENNESSEE.DECEMBER 1st-DEATH--Mr.Walter HARDY, a prominent citizen of Bells, died last Thursday at the home of his daughter in Nashville at the age of 67 years. The body was brought to Bells, burial at Bellvue Cemetery. He is survived by four children. SOCIETY--Miss Helen THOMPSON became the bride of A.P.MAYS of Milan Tuesday,November 30th. --Little Dorothy Dell THWEATT, daughter of Mr.& Mrs.J.W.THWEATT has been quite ill with diptheria. IN MEMORY OF MRS.JIM McBROOM--On November 23rd,the death angel visited the home of Mr.& Mrs.Will BIRMINGHAM and took away one from this home who was loved by many.The deceased leaves a little boy, her mother, several brothers and sisters. DEATH--Hazel Gill,son of the late George GILL, a veteran of the late war and a well-known Humboldt boy died at his home Tuesday at 8 p.m.of pneumonia.He is survived by his wife and baby;step-mother and two brothers, Morris GILL,of Meridan, Miss.,and George GILL,of this city.Hazel was about 29 years of age.Services were conducted at the family residence, burial in Rose Hill Cemetery. DEATH--The sad news reached Humboldt that Mrs. Ruth Yandell WRIGHT,wife of Aubrey A.WRIGHT had died Wednesday in a Dallas, Texas hospital,following an operation.she was an old Humboldt girl, and the remains are expected to reach Humboldt,services will be held Saturday,interment in Rose Hill Cemetery.She is survived by her husband;her mother,Mrs.Alice YANDELL;four sisters,Mrs.H.H.ROSS of McKenzie;Lucille YANDELL of Memphis;Miss Wilkens YANDELL and Mrs.George CRADDOCK of Humboldt; two brothers, Marshall and Howard YANDELL, both of Memphis. End of December 3,1920 issue. ************************************************************************ ================================================================ THE COURIER-CHRONICLE VOLUME XXII NO.51 FRIDAY DECEMBER 17,1920 HUMBOLDT,TENNESSEE ================================================================ HAPPINGS AT THE COUNTY SEAY-LOCAL NEWS--Mrs.R.C.ADAMS has gone to Knoxville to spend several weeks with her daughter,Mrs.G.L.HARRINGTON. --Hunter TYREE of Detroit,Mich.,and Miss Mary LASSITER of Jackson,TN will be married in Chicago on the 23rd of this month.He is the son of Dr.C.E.TYREE of near Trenton,she is the daughter of Mr.& Mrs.Andrew LASSITER of this place. TRAGIC DEATH--One of the saddest and most deplorable tragedies that shocked this community in a long while occurred Tuesday about 10 p.m.,when Robert Nelson,son of Mr.& Mrs.R.H.NELSON,of near Humboldt,in a moment,probably,of mental abberation,ended his own life.Robert was home on leave from the Navy,to which service he had enlisted about one year ago and was preparing to return when as the father and mother were preparing to accompany Robert to the train,when he stepped into another room and shot himself in the head.He was about 19 years of age,this was his first visit home since enlistment.Services were held in the family home,burial in Old Gibson Churchyard.The parents and brothers are left to mourn.Another son died while in the Army during the war. CROCKETT COUNTY NEWS FROM ALAMO--Mrs.Lem McLEAN and three fine sons of #7 spent Monday with her sister,Mrs.Leslie VERNON. --Mrs.H.W.COOKE will be spending the holidays in Shelbyville with her daughter,Mrs.Phil HOUSER. --Olie KELLY of Caruthersville,MO who has been in the Presbyterian hospital in Memphis for the last six weeks and part of the time dangerously ill,was able to leave Monday and Clem HOWELL went to Memphis and brought him here to the home of his parents. --Sam WARREN had the misfortune of getting his leg broken Monday by falling off an oil wagon. --All the friends of the family of Mr.Jim LOWERY,who died suddenly Sunday afternoon offer their sympathy. “WITH THE COLORS FROM GIBSON COUNTY;1917;1918;1919”--Mrs.G.B.HARGROVE received a letter dated December 10th,1920 from Governor A.H.ROBERTS congradulating her on the book. DEATH.GIBSON,TENN.,DECEMBER 17th--Mrs.Phoebe WALLACE,85,was found in her room burned to death to day at her home near here.There was no one in the room at the time,and it is supposed her clothes ignited or the mantel caught fire and she tried to put it out.She was the widow of John H.WALLACE and is survived by the following children:William,J.L.& J.R.WALLACE and Mrs.Will GIBSON,all of Earle,Ark.,and Mrs.S.S.GLEASON,with whom she made her home.She was the aunt of Mrs.S.S.FEATHERSTONE of Humboldt. ITEMS OF INTEREST FROM GADSDEN--The Misses DUNGAN of Humboldt,were weekend guests of their uncle,Walter PATTERSON and wife. --Miss Agatha BOALS and little brother,Bernard,are visiting their sister,Mrs.Edgar PATTERSON in Memphis. --Mrs.Tinder WELCH has as her guests her sister,Miss Rosa THAXTER and brother,Mr.THAXTER of KY. -- The friends of R.S.MATTHEWS will be pained to learn that he is declining rapidly,in consequence of a cancer on his face.He is with his son,Bob Lee MATTHEWS,in Madison County. --On December 12th,in Memphis,at the home of her only survivimg daughter,Mrs.B.S.HUMPREYS,the spirit of Mrs.Mary HUMPREYS passed into the great beyond,she having passed the 86th milestone.She was the widow of W.G.HUMPHREYS,step-mother to Esq.L.E.HUMPHREYS.This place was her home before going to Memphis.Living here are two of her grandsons,Tinder WELCH and Bennett WELCH,and a great grandson,John D.WELCH.Bennett WELCH attended his grandmother’s funeral at Memphis last Monday. DEATH.MILAN,TENN.December 17th-Irvin LOWRANCE,45,dropped dead from heart failure at his home Wednesday morning.He was a farmer,residing five miles from here survived by wife and children.Burial in Pisgah Cemetery on Thursday. DEATH--Maurice MORPHIS died at the tubercular hospital in Davidson County,near Nashville,on Friday,Dec.24th.The remaines were brought to Humboldt on Sunday following Christmas day and interred in the Rose Hill Cemetery.He was reared in Humboldt and was about 26 years of age.He is survived by one sister,Mrs.Milton SIMMONS,of Macon,Georgia.Services were conducted at the home of Mr.& Mrs.E.W.HAWKS. DEATH--A.L.”Fate” PATTERSON died at his home just west of Humboldt,Tuesday,8 a.m.,after a short illness of pneumonia.He is survived by his wife;four sons;and four daughters.He was 61 years of age.Services were conducted at the residence Wednesday,burial in Salem churchyard. KNOXVILLE,TENN.,JAN.9th--Despite a steady downpour of rain,a crowd of about 1500 to 2000 people attended the services and burial of the body of the late Senator J.Parks WORLEY at the Bluff City. KNOXVILLE,Tenn.,Jan.8th--Mrs.Carrie HIGGINS,age 70,her daughter,Mrs.Addie FARMER,aged 38,and two grandchildren,Rea-y & Sallie FARMER,aged 8 & 7 years,were burned to death early this morning in their home near Rogersville.The fire was discovered by Mrs.FARMER,who roused her husband and told him to rescue their crippled child first,while she carried out two other children.Rushing back into the house to get the two remaining children and was hemmed in by the flames and was burned to death with her mother,despite desperate efforts of her husband and neighbors to rescue them. JACKSON,TENN.JAN.10th.DEATH--Miss Corinna A.McCORRY,prominent in U.D.C.Circles of the state and for a number of years society editor of the Jackson Sun,died at her home here this afternoon.She was born in this city April 20,1850 and had been a lifelong resident.She was a member of the Catholic Church,a sister of the late Judge Henry W.McCORRY,Mrs.Mary FREEMAN,of Memphis and Judge Thos.McCORRY of Jackson is her nephew. MEMPHIS,TENN.,JAN.10th--Michael W.CONNELLY,aged 68,member of the editorial staff of the News-Scimitar,died here early Sunday at his home.He came to Memphis in 1880 and has been connected with various papers here since.He is survived by four sons and one daughter. DYERSBURG,TENN.,JAN.8th--J.R.KIRBY,a young stenographer of this city,took two tablets of bichloride mercury to-day.He had been suffering from neuralgia,and it is alleged he remarked it would be better if he were dead.He is in Dyersburg General Hospital and is not expected to recover.His relatives in Memphis have been notified. WILSON,ARK.,JAN.19th--Henry LOWERY,negro,slayer of O.T.CRAIG,prominent planter of Nodona,and the latter’s daughter,Mrs.C.O.WILLIAMSON on December 25th,has been captured by police of Elpaso,Texas and will be returned here at once.LOWERY also seriously wounded Hugh & Richard CRAIG,sons of O.T.CRAIG.Richard is still lingering near death in a Memphis hospital. DEATH--After an illness of many months,Mr.John T.BROWN,one of Humboldt’s old and most beloved citizens,died at his home on Osborne Street Saturday afternoon about 4 o’clock.He was 75 years of age and is survived by his wife;sons,Will BROWN,whose address at present is unknown; Jesse BROWN,of Clarksdale,Miss.,and John BROWN,of Albany,Ala.; daughters,Mrs.R.P.KERR and Mra.W.T.COX,of Humboldt.Services were held at the Methodist Church Sunday,burial in Rose Hill Cemetery.He was a vetern of the Civil War. WEEK’S DOINGS OF MEDINA PEOPLE--Mr.James Dunlap has returned to Sharon,after a visit to his daughter,Mrs.Joe ROWLETT. --Mr.Grady THORN,of Gibson,is visiting his sister,Mrs.J.H.FUTRELL. MYSTERIOUSLY DISAPPEARS--Sometime Saturday afternoon ,probably about 2 p.m.,Mr.Harris J.NELSON,manager of the Tennessee Hardware Company,and one of Humboldt’s most popular business men and citizens,disappeared and his whereabouts are still unknown.Mr.NELSON was last seen on the streets at 2 p.m.,soon after this hour he was missed and general inquiry began for him.Later he was reported to have been seen about the union passenger station,at about 12:30 o’clock.Sunday morning,Mr.T.N.NELSON, father of the missing man,went to Memphis,under the impression he may have gone to that city.Later Sunday morning,the family was informed he had been seen on the M.& O.Railroad between Carroll Switch and Jackson,and that he was afoot and walking toward Jackson.This report was given in by Mr.Mit STOKES. Thursday afternoon,a telegram was received by Mr.T.M.NELSON,dated Louisville,KY Jan.,20,1 p.m.,and signed H.J.NELSON,asking that $200.00 be wired to him at Winchester,KY and saying,”I’m coming home.”Mr.T.N.NELSON left last night for Winchester,hoping to find his son there. SANDERS BLUFF ITEMS--We are sorry to hear of the death of Mr.Charlie MITCHELL. “TWARTED LOVE”--Henry HAWKINS,of Humboldt and Miss Willie May GOOSEMAN,aged 16 years,of Bells,attempted to stage a runaway marriage during the holidays.They went to Trenton with some friends to buy a “pair of license” but Ma GOOSEMAN was made aware of their intentions and promptly stopped the proceedings by calling on an officier to take charge of the couple.After a few words the wedding party disintergrated. DEATH-BELLS,TENN.,JAN.18th--The remains of Willis Y.HITER were brought here last Thursday from LA,at which place he died.He was reared near Bells,and went to LA several years ago,where he has been a successful teacher in one of the largest schools in the state.He leaves a young wife,mother,two brothers and three sisters.The burial took place in Bellvue Cemetery. DEATH-BELLS,TENN.,JAN.18th--Mr.George W.TATUM,a well-known citizen of Crockett County,died Monday night at his residence in Bells,at the age of 76 years.He leaves his wife and a host of relatives and friends,burial in Bellvue Central. ITEMS OF INTEREST FROM GADSDEN--Mrs.A.T.HORINE,whose death occurred a few days since at Chattanooga,was for many years a resident of this place.Her husband,A.T.HORINE,was the pioneer fruit grower and especially strawberry raiser,in this section of country. --Relatives of Hilliard DUNLAP have been notified of his death,which occurred recently at his home in Okla.He was reared to young manhood near here.At the time of his death,he was proprietor of a chain of twenty stores,the annual business of which amounted to about one million dollars.He was a near relative of J.K.DUNLAP and Mrs.W.Z.RAINES.He married Miss Julia CORNATZER,who survives him. R.F.D.#10 CROCKETT COUNTY--Dr.R.J.WILLIAMS,after a few weeks’visit with his daughter,Mrs.Ernest LEMOND at Gadsden,has returned home. --Messrs.E.S.& J.M.COX were in Alamo visiting their uncles and aunts;Mr.& Mrs.Cal SMOTHERS and Mr.& Mrs.J.R.FARROW,who have been in very poor health. INTERESTING NEWS FROM GIBSON--Mr.Thomas M.LANE,78,died early Tuesday morning at the home of his son-in-law,O.M.FLY,in this city.He leaves his wife;children,R.H.LANE and Mrs.J.C.WOOD,of Jackson; Mrs.O.M.FLY and Mrs.Roy MORGAN of Gibson; and Mrs.Will SHEARD,of Trenton.A sister and three brothers also survive him.After services at the residence,the body was laid to rest in White Rose Cemetery. --Dr.J.H.ROZZELL was called to Hazel,KY,Thursday to attend the funeral of his nephew,Renzo FRIZZELL,who was killed in an auto accident Monday at Colliersville,Illinois. --Mr.ALLISON,of Vardaman,Miss.,attended the funeral of his son-in-law,John STAVELY,here Sunday. --Mr.John STAVELY,about 35 years of age,died Saturday afternoon at his home two miles north of Gibson.Services were held at Double Springs Sunday,burial in Double Springs Cemetery.He leaves a wife,two small children.a sister and several brothers to mourn his death. CROCKETT COUNTY NEWS FROM ALAMO--Mr.A.J.HAYS,of Mercer,was guest of his brother,W.C.HAYES and family the weekend. --Mrs.Jim FARROW and son,P.G.,were weekends guests of her sister,Mrs.Almyr CATES at Brownsville. --BORN to Mr.& Mrs.Lee BRANDON on Sunday,Jan.16th,a son. --Mrs.T.G.JOHNSON,wife of Green JOHNSON,mother of Annie ROONEY, Nebhut and Hamlett JOHNSON, Mrs.J.E.McCLANAHAN and Mrs.J.B.EMISON,died at her home on Main Street last Tuesday.She had lived in Alamo since her marriage to Dr.JOHNSON some forty years ago.She was 64 years of age.Burial in Alamo Cemetery. --Dr.M.READ was called to Memphis to the bedside of his little son,Charles Edward,who with his mother,has been in a hospital,very ill of blood poison caused by a tooth. --DAVIDSON CHAPEL--James,little son of Mr.& Mrs.Jabe DAVIDSON,is very low with diphteria. --Mr.& Mrs.Billie DAVIDSON,of Laneview,spent Monday at the bedside of their little grandson,James DAVIDSON. IN MEMORIAM--Mrs.A.T.HORINE,Sr.,of Chattanooga,Tennessee at 11:30 p.m.Thursday morning,December 23,1920,found the pearly gates ajar at the portals of Heaven,and she entered therein,leaving many sorrowing friends and relatives to mourn their loss.Two sons,Victor C.HORINE,of El Centro,Calif.,and Alonza T.HORINE,of Detroit,Mich.;two daughters,Misses Lillian & Beatrice HORINE,of Chattanooga; a brother,Judge D.B.D.SMELTZER,of Iola,Kansas,also M.F.H.SMELTZER of Van Buren,Ark.;two sisters,Mrs.Ellen M.SANNER,of Middleton,Maryland and Mrs.Amanda S.KISSELL of Heagerstown,Maryland,all survive her.She had been confned to her home for a number of years with acute Bright’s disease.Mr.& mrs.HORINE lived for years near Gadsden,moved to Virginia 26 years ago,then to Chattanooga where Mr.HORINE died of paralysis 19 years ago.She was laid to rest beside him in beautiful Forest Hill Cemetery--Her Loving Neice;Mrs.Geo.D.BRANDENBURG. ITEMS OF INTEREST FROM GADSDEN--Miss Ruth JAMES of Bells,spent the weekend with her parents,Dr.& Mrs.F.C.JAMES. --Mrs.Bettie THRONBERRY,of Wartrace is visiting her Brother,R.K.STEVENS,and other relatives. --Tom RICHARDSON of near Center Church, died last Tuesday.
