Miss Virginia AUSTIN attended the funeral of Mrs. AVERY Friday and returned to her school in Maury City Monday. Halster BAKER of Tigrett attended the funeral of his little neice,Bonnie Claire PIQUE here Sunday afternoon. Miss Ruby PORTER and Mr. BUCKINGHAM of District #7,were married Wednesday at the home of the bride's uncle,Jim Neal McMILLAN. Mr.BENNETT went to Memphis on Tuesday of last week to have his leg amputated.He stood the operation fine. The community is in deep sympathy with Mr.& Mrs, PIQUE over the death of their sweet babe,Bonnie Claire,who died Saturday after several weeks suffering with whooping cough. The community deeply sympathize with Mr.& Mrs.PATRICK in the loss of their daughter,Mrs.CALDWELL of Milan,who died in Memphis Thursday. Warren PATRICK was called from Mobile last week to attend the funeral of his sister,Mrs.CALDWELL. The announcement of the engagement and approaching marriage of Miss Rawlie YATES,of Lexington,to Mr.John McCALL was made in Sunday's Commercial Appeal by her parents,Mr.& Mrs.W.H.MONTGOMERY.The wedding will take place the 30th of March. Miss YATES is a sister of Mrs.Herman CONYERS of this city. ---THE DEAD--- Mrs.Sallie STROUD STEVENS died at the home of her brother,Mr.Joe STROUD at 7 a.m.today.The remains will be buried at Old Gibson Cemetery tomorrow.She was 30 years old and is survived by three children; Mary Lee, Martha, and Ruth; one brother:Joe STROUD; sisters;Misses Mattie & Lou STROUD both of Memphis; Mrs.Elma DESMOND & Mrs.D.McCONNELL,both of Brownsville. ---DIES IN FAR-AWAY KOREA--- The sad news reached Humboldt last Saturday that Mrs.Anna Belle MAJOR NISBET had died in Kunju,Korea,where she had been engaged with her husband,Rev.J.S.NISBET,in missionary work for some years.News came some time ago that she was suffering from cancer and her life was dispaired of.Mr.& Mrs.NESBIT were residents for some time in Humboldt. (name spelled two ways) ---KILLED BY FALLING TREE--- Clarence E.BRANSON, a young farmer of the 8th District,died at his home,Wednesday morning following a serious accident on Tuesday.He was engaged in felling a tree having three prongs.As it fell to the ground it split in three ways,and he could not get from under the weight of one section.He was crushed to the ground and his body entirely paralyzed from the neck down.He was 38 years of age,had been working in Caruthersville,MO.,for several months and had only returned to his home the first of the year. ---DEATHS OF THE WEEK = COMPILED BY BODKIN & SON; Undertakers---OWENS.-- AT residence on 22nd Avenue,March 10th,1920,at 10:00 a.m.Dennis OWENS,husband of Sarah E.OWENS,father of Jessie, Will, John, F.C., and Sid OWENS, and Mrs.SHOOK. HUMBOLDT,TENNESSEE FRIDAY 26th MARCH,1920. ============================================================================== ---TRAGIC DEATH OF L.W.HASTE--- At Troy,Ala.,on last Thursday night,L.W.HASTE,traveling salesman of Nashville,was foully murdered.The car was stuck up in the road about dark and the salesman was compelled to spend the night at a near by farm house.The farmer,who it turned out was a moonshiner and desperate character,mistook Mr.HASTE for a revenue man and struck him with a hammer while he was sleeping,afterward shooting him through the side of the head with a derringer pistol twice. ---THE REMAINS---of Mr.L.W.CHASE,whose death occurred last week at Troy.Ala.,were brought here to this city Monday over the M.and O. road and taken to the home of Dr.R.O.WILLIAMS.After services,interment was in Rose Hill Cemetery.He is survived by his wife,formerly Miss Elizabeth HILL; daughter,Elizabeth; brother, Dr.D.M.HASTE,of Memphis; sisters, Mrs.J.W.MEEK, Mrs.J.L.CAIL, Mrs.C.P.PYPASS,all of Trenton; Mrs.Maude WILLIAMS and Mrs.C.A.DOUGLAS,both of this city. ---LIVE NOTES OF NEWS FROM FRUITLAND--- Mrs.W.T.SCRUGGS was called Tuesday to the bedside of her daughter,Miss Florence HUNT,who is ill at Eaton. ---CROCKETT COUNTY NEWS FROM ALAMO--- Real Estate Transfer--J.H. The many friends of Mr.& Mrs.C.J.FORD sincerely sympathize with them in the death of their first born,a precious baby girl,which sad event occurred last Thursday. Mrs.FORD has been critically ill,but is somewhat improved. Last report from John H.REEVES is that he is able to sit up and walk about the place,but sad to relate,his mentality has not yet recovered from the severe shock. C.E.BOXLEY died at his home here Tuesday evening,after a long illness.He is survived by his wife.Interment in Oakland Cemetery. ---INTERESTING NEWS FROM GIBSON--- Dr.R.H.HUNT received a message Monday announcing the death Sunday in Hillville,TX,of his brother,Elbert HUNT,aged 63 years.Mr.HUNT was born and reared here,but moved to TX several years ago,where he married and raised a family of one girl and ten boys.He leaves,besides the children;his wife;three brothers,Dr.R.H., and J.H.HUNT of Gibson and Joe HUNT of TX; one sister,Mrs.Emma ROBINSON. BORN to Esq.& Mrs.R.Z.COLEMAN, a fine girl. ---DEATH--- Captain John Quincy CRAIG,very quietly breathed his last in the home of his son-in-law,Mr.O.L.GRANT.He was 80 years of age. His wife died about 12 years ago.Five children survive; Hon.W.W.CRAIG of Ripley, Dr.Robert CRAIG of Humboldt, Mrs.M.J.HOWELL of Dyersburg, Mrs.W.F.SUMMERS of Clarksdale,Miss.,and Mrs.O.L.GRANT of this place.His body was carried to Mount Zion Church,near Friendship and after service,it was laid to rest beside the dust of his wife. ---LIVE NEWS NOTES FROM FRUITLAND--- The seven months old girl of Mr.& Mrs.Walter KILSER died Tuesday of pneumonia. Mrs.Joe WEBB died Thursday of tuberculois and was carried back to her old home in Middle Tennessee for burial. Mr.J.W.ROE carried his daughter,Annie Dell,to the Presbyterian Hospital in Memphis where she was operated on for appendicitis.She is reported doing well. ---YOUNG LADY INSTANTLY KILLED BY TRAIN--- Paris,Tennessee,April 16th.-An automobile driven by Miss Martha SWINNEY,was struck by passenger train #5 on the N.C.& St.L.Railway at the Dunlap Crossing here today killing her instantly and painfully bruising her companion,B.M.COCKRELL,of Jackson,TN.Miss SWINNEY was 24 years of age,the daughter of Mr.& Mrs.Henry B.SWINNEY of Chickasaw Suburbs.The scene of the accident is where Dr.R.J.McFALL,a prominent physician of Paris,was killed in a similar manner.At that point,there is an embankment which partly obscures an approaching train as it rounds a curve before crossing the street. ---ENTERPRISE ITEMS--- Mrs.Mollie May HILL and two children spent Sunday at Bells with her sister,Mrs.J.B.EDWARDS,who celebrated her little daughter,Elizabeth Bradford's fourth birthday. Miss Florence LETT attended the funeral of Mr.HYDE at Milan Monday. ---SOCIETY--- A quiet home wedding with only members of the immediate families present,took place at the residence of the bride's parents in this city on Tuesday,April 20th,when Miss Mary H.SENTER,daughter of Mr.& Mrs.A.H.SENTER was united in marriage with Mr.Marion HENDERSON,of Bells,Tennessee.They will make their home in Crockett Mills. The marriage of Miss Lillian OBELY and Mr.Elmer THOMPSON was beautifully solemnized on last Wednesday,the ceremony being said by the grandfather of the groom,Rev.J.H.PRICE. Mrs.H.L.CATES, Mrs.George GOOSMAN, and daughter,Miss Willie Mae, and Miss Alta Mai MIDYETT,of Bells,spent Thursday shopping in Humboldt. The remains were brought here last Thursday evening.Services were held at Union,a few miles from this city,Friday afternoon.He is survived by his wife and several children. Mr.& Mrs.Joe REEVES are the proud parents of a fine new girl in their home,she having arrived Monday night to gladden their hearts. Mr.Dave COGBURN,the most aged citizen of this community,left for St.Louis Tuesday,where he expects to make his future home with his daughter. ---INTERESTING NEWS FROM GIBSON--- Roy MORGAN,aged 36 years,died at St.Joseph Hospital early Wednesday morning,after a short illness of Bright's disease.He was taken sick last Tuesday and grew worse until Sunday night,when he was removed to the hospital but it continued to grow worse until death relieved him. Mr.Will SHERROD and Mr.& Mrs.R.L.DAWSON were with him when the end came.The body was laid to rest in White Rose Cemetery, Trenton,Tenn. ---DAVIDSON CHAPEL--- T.H.CONNELL and Beulah MULLINS were married Sunday morning at the home of Rev.W.J.McLEAN who pronounced the ceremony. ---WALNUT GROVE 6th DISTRICT--- The neighborhood was saddened last week by the death of Mr.George COLEMAN,an aged and highly respected citizen of this section.He was 69 years old;was reared in Williamson County,and came to Gibson County as a young man.He was married to Miss Luvenial NEAL in 1862.To this union three children were born,namely:Jno.W.COLEMAN, Thos. COLEMAN, and Mrs.James GAY.The remains were laid to rest in Olive Branch Cemetery. Little Bennie BURKETTE and Woodrow LANCASTER are both victims of pneumonia this week. Mr.Finis SUMMERS,of Neboville,and Miss Mary TAYLOR were married Wednesday at the residence of the bride.She is the daughter of Mr.& Mrs.G.W.TAYLOR. The infant of Mr.& Mrs.Walter CLAYBROOK fell out of its mother's arms while she was driving Tuesday and received a severe wound on the head.
