Collect N.P.R. MW Connelly Memphis Tenn. Another fire is now raging and it appears the business portion of our town is doomed. About 7 oclock while the people were at the M.E. Church attending the Christmas tree, the dread cry of fire rang out. A panic was narrowly averted but fortunately no one was hurt. It ptoved to be the two livery stables owned and operated by Fedix Conlee it is impossible to know the damage but --- loss is placed ---- than three thousand -----no insurance. At about 7 oclock while nearby the entire population were enjoying the Christmas Tree exercises at the M E Church the dread cry of fire caused a panic but fortunately no one was hurt. It proved to be the two livery stables owned and operated by Felix Conlee. Five horses were burned with the buildings. His loss is estimated at about three thousand dollars with no insurance. This evening while the city marshall R B Wren was attempting to arrest John Pate he was forced to shoot him account of Pate resisting with a knife the bullet struck the knife which glanced it to one side had it taken its original course doubtless Pate would have been killed after the shot was fired a general free fight took place when several heads were badly bruised J E Cole same report on partial sheet of paper. to shoot him on account of Pate resisting with an open knife.
