FRIDAY JANUARY 12,1923 ON MONDAY NIGHT--January 8th,the Death Angel visited our community and took one of our best citizens,Mr.JOHN M.OAKLEY.He was about 58 years of age;he leaves his wife,eight children and one brother.His body was laid to rest in Oak Grove Cemetery beneath a mound of flowers. GIBSON--Jas.H.BASS was called to Nashville Monday to attend the funeral of his cousin,William RICHARDSON. GIBSON--The young daughter of Mr.& Mrs.John WRIGHT died Monday at their home near Jackson.The body was brought here Tuesday and buried in White Rose Cemetery. GIBSON;CARLOS B.CHAMBERLAIN--son of Jesse CHAMBERLAIN,died Tuesday at his home in Humboldt.He is survived by his wife,one child;his parents,brothers and sisters. MEDINA--Mr.J.W.MAYO and family attended the funeral of Mrs.Laura PEEK at Milan Friday. MEDINA--Mr.& Mrs.D.G.BOYD attended funeral services for Mrs.Henry BOYD at Trexevant Monday. ************************* FRIDAY JANUARY 19,1923 LOSES WIFE AND SON--The shocking news reached Humboldt this (Friday) morning that MRS.CHARLIE NORDSTRUM and son,CARL PETER,had died at an early hour of the morning of pneumonia.Mr.NORDSTRUM himself is suffering from the same disease and his friends are uneasy at his condition.Despite the pain of the disease,he continued to look after his wife and son until the end,and came to town to attend to the funeral arrangements.The NORDSTRUM family had lived on their farm for a number of years,it being about three and one half miles northeast of Humboldt.Funeral services will be held at the family home,burial in Rose Hill Cemetery. NEGRO BOY BURNS TO DEATH--PRESLEY SHARP,colored,and about 21 years of age,burned to death at the family home near Campbell's lumber yard Thursday.It is supposed the boy,who was subject to epileptic attacks,suffered an attack and fell into the fire.He was alone when it happened. PASSES TO REWARD--MR.L.J.JARRELL died at the home of his son,C.W.JARRELL on Central Avenue North Sunday afternoon,after a brief illness of influenza.Deceased was 79 years of age and had lived in Humboldt since 1870.He came here from Wilson County.His wife died some years ago and he made his home with his son,who is his only surviving child.He is also survived by two brothers,Robert JARRELL,of Nashville and Julian JARRELL,of Wilson County.He was a veteran of the Civil War and saw active service for the Confederacy.He was with Gen.Morgan's Cavalry in the famous Ohio raid.Funeral services were held at the residence,burial in Rose Hill Cemetery. MR.BEN F.CRADDOCK--died after a brief illness of pneumonia Tuesday morning at his home a few miles west of Humboldt.He is survived by his wife;a son;a daughter;four brothers,W.R.,James,Fred,and Jessie CRADDOCK;one sister,Mrs.J.W.PERRY,of Maury Junction,Tenn.He was about 32 years of age,a son of the late J.F.CRADDOCK.Funeral services were held at the family home,burial in Collinsworth Cemetery.(LATER)-- MRS.CRADDOCK died of pneumonia at 9 o'clock this (Friday) morning.The funeral will take place sometime tommorrow. MEDINA--MR.& MRS.ELMER COATES have the sympathy of their many friends in the loss of their infant daughter,NANCY ELIZABETH,whose death occurred on Monday morning from bronchial pneumonia.The body was carried to Greenfield,their former home Tuesday for interment. MEDINA--A gloom was cast over Medina when it was learned that MRS.BERTHA WILLIFORD TURNER,wife of Joe B.TURNER,postmaster of this place was dead.Her death occurred Tuesday night after an illness of many months.The funeral services were conducted at Antioch.(related news--MRS.BERTHA TURNER died at her home at Medina Wednesday and was buried Thursday.She was the neice of Messrs.Lee, R.H.,and T.N.NELSON of this city.Humboldt.) GADSDEN--The remains of MRS.EMELINE PETTERSON,who was found dead in bed at the home of her son,Pled PATTERSON,in Bells,were brought to Salem last Monday and given interment. ************************ FRIDAY JANUARY 26,1923 ALAMO;TOM RYE WALLACE--aged 8 years,youngest son of Mrs.Littie WALLACE,died Sunday morning of influenza and pneumonia.He was sick only about a week.In November,Mrs.WALLACE lost a grown son by death on the B.& N.W.Railroad. MRS.COGBURN and children,of near Gibson Wells,attended the funeral of her nephew,Tom Rye WALLACE. MRS.MARY TODD CRADDOCK--wife of the late Ben F.CRADDOCK,died at the family home Friday morning,January 19th at 9 a.m.,after which the remains were laid to rest in the Collinsworth Cemetery.She was a member of the Baptist Church at Bethal.Her death is doubly sad for the little son and daughter,the mother's death following within three days of the father's.She is also survived by her parents,Mr.& Mrs.Robert TODD and several sisters and brothers. N.P."NICK" HAMILTON--died on Saturday,January 20th at his home three miles east of Humboldt,after a short illness of pneumonia.The funeral service was held at the Pleasant Hill C.P.Church,after which the body was laid to rest in the Prewett Cemetery.He was in his 64th year and is survived by his wife and the following children:Mrs.Robert WARMATH,Mrs.Zula BROWNING,Mrs.Minnie HUMPHREYS,Messrs.Ed and Leonard and Misses Sadie,Mary Dee and Ethel HAMILTON.(Dr.H.F.WRAY and wife of Brownsville,attended the funeral of Mrs.WRAY's uncle;N.P.HAMILTON Sunday.) JAMES THOMAS McGUIRE--age 46 years,died at his home Thursday night after an eleven days illness with pneumonia.The funeral will occur at his home,burial in Rose Hill Cemetery.He is survived by two brothers,George and Mike,and one sister,Mrs.Mamie CHRISTIE. CORLIA ROBINSON--the little 21-month-old daughter of Mr.& Mrs.G.W.ROBINSON,died this Friday morning at the family home on Mr.H.S.STALLINGS'farm. TRENTON--The remains of "AUNT MOLLIE" WEBB was brought from St.Louis to this place Monday for interment."Aunt Mollie'was a faithful old colored woman,and had many friends here among the white,who regret to hear of her death.She was for many years head cook at the Virginia Hotel. JUDGE THOMAS McCORRY DIES AT JACKSON--following an attack of pneumonia.He was a son of the late Judge Henry W.and Mrs.Lucy COLE McCORRY.He leaves his wife,Mrs.Sadie McCORRY;two sons,Thomas,Jr.,and Mercer McCORRY,of Jackson;five sisters and a brother. WILLIAM INGRAM,JACKSON BANKER,DROPS DEAD--at his home on Chester street tonight,January 28th.He was born in Jackson and was about 50 years old.His wife,Mary JONES INGRAM,who survives him is a daughter of the late Dr.J.T.JONES.He is also survived by two daughters,Miss Alice Isabel INGRAM and Miss Mary Jones INGRAM. JUDGE D.W.HERRING IS DEAD AT JACKSON--formerly consul to Honduras during the first Administration of President Cleveland,and for more than 40 years a leading member of the West Tennessee Bar,passed away at his home here Sunday.Born in Savannah,Hardin County,in 1852,he lived in Jackson since 1890.Surviving are his wife;four children,Ethel,of Jackson;Mrs.Julia BARRY,of Clovis,N.M.,Harry,of El Paso,Texas and Dan,of New York;one brother,J.H.,of Knoxville;one sister,Mrs.Mart ROBINSON,of Wichita Falls,Texas. ************************* FRIDAY FEBRUARY 2,1923 ALAMO; MR.J.C.SMOTHERS--died at his home here Tuesday after a two weeks'illness of pneumonia.He was about 82 years of age.Besides his wife,he is survived by a son,Oscar and a daughter,Mrs.Laura LONDON. DR.THOMPSON CLOSES FINE LIFE--Dr.Sidney THOMPSON died at his home on Main Street Sunday night,January 28th,after an illness that extended through nearly a year.He was connected with the Eastern Hospital for the Insane near Knoxville when he suffered an attack of heart trouble.Funeral services were held at the home,conducted by Rev/MAXEDON,after which interment was in Rose Hill Cemetery.He was 62 years of age,had lived in Humboldt for twenty years,survived by his wife,Mrs.Annie PALMER THOMPSON;a sister,Mrs.J.N.ANDREWS,of Memphis;a brother,Mr.Marion THOMPSON,of Millington,Tenn.,also his brother-in-law,Judge John W.PALMER,of Memphis. ACCIDENTLY KILLED;LULA,MISS.,JANUARY 30--T.LAMAR NEWHOUSE,31,was electrocuted at his home here today,while operating an electric iron.It is believed that Mr.NEWHOUSE was attempting to detach the wire and came into contact to an exposed part.The accident occurred about 6:45 o'clock.He was married,but had no children.He served as Express agent at this place.He came here from Humboldt,Tenn.,and his parents,Mr.& Mrs.J.P.NEWHOUSE still live there. DUAL MURDER LAID TO PUPPY LOVE,REVENGE--Memphis,Tenn.,Jan.29th.To "puppy love," and a desire for revenge,the police ascribe the murder of pretty Mrs.Ruth McELWAINE TUCKER & Duncan WALKER,19,a traveling salesman of Paducah,Ky.Their bodies were found by the side of a lonely road four miles from the city Sunday morning.WALKER's body was slumped behind the steering wheel of the auto,after three bullets fired through the glass in the rear of the car had found marks in his back and head.The girl lay face down,20 feet away.A bullrt had struck her in the back of the head as she was fleeing the scene.Fingernail marks on her wrists showed she had struggled with her slayer. MRS.MARY E.SMITH--wife of L.A.SMITH,died at 12:10 o'clock Wednesday morning,after a short illness of pneumonia.after a funeral service conducted by Rev.KIRKLAND,the remains were laid to rest at Old Gibson.She is survived by her husband and four sons.She was in her 29th year. MILDRED HORNER--the little five-year-old daughter of Mr.& Mrs.Fred HORNER,died at the family home on Wednesday morning after being sick but a few days of pneumonia and other complications.Funeral services were held at the residence,the remains were buried in Rose Hill Cemetery. NASHVILLE,TENN.,FEBRUARY 1--GEO.I.MATTHEWS,of Franklin,Tenn.,76,president of the Bee Keepers'Association,dropped dead at today's meeting of the association,a few minutes after delivering his speech,heart trouble being ascribed as the cause. FRIENDSHIP,TENN.,FEBRUARY 2--LARRY MONTAGUE,21,died at his home near Maury City,this county today.His wife and four children survuve him.Burial will be in Bells,where he formerly resided. FRIENDSHIP,TENN.,FEBRUARY 2--ESQ.W.W.WHITBY,75,former member of Crockett County court,died at his home in the 15th District of this county of pneumonia.Burial will be at Bethesda. LEXINGTON,TENN.,FEBRUARY 3--Wednesday of this week,Dr.J.M.ARNOLD,a local physician,was called to the home of Jesse JONES,on the farm of John YOUNG,near Life,five miles west of Lexington.When Dr.ARNOLD reached the JONES home,he found Mrs.JONES so low,that she died while he was there,after prematurely giving birth to twin babies.MR.JONES was lying in bed in the same room.He was known to be sick,but was thought to be resting.On examination by Dr.ARNOLD,he was found to have been dead for several hours. ************************** FRIDAY FEBRUARY 16,1923 RESPECTED LADY PASSES TO HER REWARD--MRS.MARY J.BURNS died Monday at 11:30 o'clock at the home of her daughter,Mrs.Sallie Belle WALKER,on Osborne St.,after an illness of several weeks.Her death was caused by infirmities of old age.Funeral services were conducted at the Methodist Church by Rev.MAXEDON.The remains were laid to rest in Rose Hill Cemetery beside her husband.She was born November 11,1839 in Crockett County,near Gadsden.She lived there until she married Rev.R.H.BURNS,in 1863,in a short while after their marriage,they moved to Gibson.At the time of her death,she was in her 84th year.She was a widow early in life,and in addition to her five children,she reared five grandchildren and two step-children.She is survived by her daughter,with whom she resided;one son,T.L.BURNS,of Gibson;one brother,T.G.H.DUNGAN,of West Palm Beach,Fla.,and five grandchildren. THOMAS BOLING,JR--died at the home of his mother,Mrs.Sallie CAMPBELL BOLING,Wednesday night,after an illness of several weeks of influenza and pneumonia.On account of the illness of Mrs.BOLING's little girl,Margaret,the remains of her son were carried to the home of her step-daughter,Mrs.Zach CAMPBELL,and funeral services were held at this home Thursday and the remains were laid to rest in Rose Hill Cemetery.Thomas was nine years of age and was in 2nd grade at school.He is survived by his mother;his sister and his step-sister. IN MEMORY OF MOTHER--MRS.R.B.BLEDSOE was born near Clarksville,Texas in 1844.When seven years old the family moved to Daingerfield,Titus County,Texas,and lived there until after the Civil War;then they moved to Humpstead County Ark.,and later she came to Gibson County Tenn.On February 11,1869,she married the late R.B.BLEDSOE,and had lived on the same farm in Enterprise community until her death February 9,1923.She leaves two daughters,Mrs.E.C.MATHES,of Trenton and Mrs.Emmett BARKER,of Edison;three sons,J.M. & W.T.BLEDSOE,of Enterprise neighborhood and J.K.BLEDSOE,of Pleasant Hill. ************************* FRIDAY FEBRUARY 23,1923 GIBSON--MISS CLARA WILSON,18,daughter of Mr.& Mrs.Vaul WALKER,died at their home west of here last Sunday of complications caused from an operation for appendicitis. GIBSON--MISS SUE SADLER,83,died Saturday at the home of her nephew,G.C.FITZGERALD.The funeral service was held at the residence by Rev.RIGGS,the body was buried at Humboldt. LASTER M.ROUDON--infant son of Mr.& Mrs.Guy ROUDON died at the family home Monday,February 19th,at 7 a.m.After a funeral service Wednesday morning by Rev.MARRINER,the remains were laid to rest in Rose Hill Cemetery.This dear little baby was only one month,fifteen days old. MRS.SUE SADLER--died at the home of her nephew,Mr.Cleveland FITZGERALD on route #4,Saturday,February 17th at noon.Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock,funeral services were conducted by Rev.RIGGS,after which the remains were laid to rest in Rose Hill Cemetery.At the time of her death,Miss SADLER was in her 82nd year.She had made her home with Mr.FITZERALD for 20 years.(Which obit is completely correct? TRENTON--SHIRLEY BIRMINGHAM,son of Mrs.W.E.BIRMINGHAN,Sr.,died February 12th after a weeks' illness of pneumonia.Funeral services were held from the residence,interment in Oakland Cemetery. TRENTON--Phillip FISHMAN and sister,Miss Sadie,accompanied the remains of their grandfather,MR.KATZ,to St.Louis Tuesday for burial.Mr.KATZ died Monday afternoon after a stroke of paralysis at the home of his daughter,Mrs.M.FISHMAN,with whom he had made his home for the past few years. ALAMO--Mesdames R.L.THOMPSON and J.S.THOMPSON attended the funeral of Mr.ED BYASSE's little boy in Maury City Saturday. MRS.ANGIE HOWARD--beloved by many people of Humboldt,died at the home of her son,Prof.S.F.HOWARD in Iuka,Miss.,on Sunday morning,February 25th,after an illness of length.Mrs.HOWARD was for many years teacher of the Primary Dept.of the Humboldt Public School.When her health began to fail some years ago,she resigned her place here and went to live with her step-son,Prof.HOWARD.The remains were taken to Athens,Ga.,and buried by her late husband,The Rev.J.S.HOWARD.She was in her 77th year and is survived only by her step-son,and her step- daughter,Mrs.WESTON,of Athens. MEDINA--Rev.W.T.TURNER,pastor of the Medina M.E.Church assisted with the funeral service at the First Methodist Church of Jackson Tuesday afternoon,of Mrs.J.L.JAMES,of Pinson,who lost her life in the cyclone which swept that place Sunday night.Her husband,Rev.J.L.JAMES,is in the Civic League Hospital and remains in critical condition. GIANT WIND STORM VERY DESTRUCTIVE--A violent windstorm swept over a wide section of the county Sunday night,destroying a vast amount of property and causing the loss of a number of lives.Humboldt,while suffering some loss of property,was fortunate as to life & limb.A portion of the little town of Pinson,about 12 miles south of Jackson,was wiped out,causing loss of life near 20.Kinspeople of several Humboldt citizens were killed or injured: Mrs.J.R.CHANDLER was the aunt of MRS.B.G.VANTRESSE,who with her two little girls were killed.MR.VANTRESSE was away from home at the time of the storm.( Mrs.J.R.CHANDLER and daughter,Miss Bessie,spent Monday and Tuesday among relatives and friends at Pinson,and attended the funeral of her neice,MRS.B.G.VANTRESSE AND TWIN DAUGHTERS,MABLE & MADGE VANYRESSE,who were killed in the storm.) *********************** FRIDAY MARCH 23,1923 THE REMAINS--of MISS GRACIE CATES were brought here from Memphis Wednesday for burial,accompanied by her sister,Miss Ruby CATES.Her death occurred at the Baptist Hospital.She was 31 years of age,a graduate of Humboldt High School,and just finished her study as a nurse,and at the time of her death was employed at the Baptist Hospital.Funeral services were held at the First Christian Church.Her father was G.M.CATES. GADSDEN--W.A.MARCOM,aged 60 years,a prominent citizen and Magistrate of District No.1,died last Thursday at his home two miles east of Bells,after a brief illness caused from a stroke of apoplexy.Surviving him are his wife;four children;his father,nearly 90 years of age;one brother and two sisters.(MR.MARCUM,age 90 years,came out from Jackson Friday and attended the funeral of his son,Esq.MARCUM at Brigance Graveyard.) COLLEGE MATRON IS BURIED IN JACKSON--The funeral of MISS ENA WILLIAMS,matron of Lovelace Hall,Union University,whose body was found near Dyersburg Saturday,was held this morning at the First Methodist Church,burial in Hollywood Cemetery.Miss WILLIAMS is believed to have drowned herself in the Forked Deer River after wandering about for several days.She had been in poor health several years.She leaves an estate of $15,000,a life interest in which is bequeathed to a sister,Miss Minta WILLIAMS.At her death,it goes to a local Methodist missionary society. GIBSON--MR.TOM DeBERRY died at his home near Pleasant Hill last Saturday.He leaves his wife;three sons,Roy, Lem,and Walter DeBERRY.Funeral services were conducted by Rev.REUB and the body laid to rest in Antioch Cemetery.He was 59.Five brothers and two sisters also survive. LONG AND USEFUL LIFE IS ENDED--MR.C.H.FERRELL is dead.After a long illness,he passed to his reward on Monday night at about 12 o'clock.For 58 years,he was identified with the business interests of Humboldt,and was a vital force in its upbuilding.He was born and reared near Newbern,Tenn.,and engaged in that town when a young man.When the Civil War came on,he enlisted in the Confederate Army and served throughout the great conflict.It was during his soldier service that he came to Humboldt on a furlough and met his future wife,Miss Lavinia SCALES.Later he was married to her,on the 7th of this month,they passed their 59th marriage anniversary.Funeral services were conducted at the Methodist Church Wednesday,burial in Rose Hill Cemetery.His wife survives him. TRENTON--The remains of MR.GEORGE DRISCELL were brought here Saturday afternoon for interment in Oakland Cemetery.He died at his home in Union City. A MEMORIAL--MRS.SUSAN CAROLINE REYNOLDS entered into rest on March 23rd,1923,at the age of 88 years and 3 months.During the last 20 years she had divided the time between her daughters,Mrs.Chas.H.GISH,of Corinth,Miss., and Mrs.Wm.P.COLE,of Medina.It was from the home of the latter that death called her.She was well-known and loved in Corinth,having spent the greater part of her life there.She and her husband,Capt.Wm.S.REYNOLDS,moved to Corinth in 1866.Mrs.REYNOLDS was born in S.C.,December 28th,1834,on Edisto Island,across the Bay from Charleston.She spent her childhood there,moving to Dallas County,Ala.,when 12 years of age,and later to Enterprise,Miss. MEDINA--Several relatives and friends from Medina,attended the funeral services of MR.WILL WALTERS at Antioch Saturday afternoon.He formerly lived here,but his death occurred after a lingering illness at his home in Oakfield.He is survived by his wife and three children. MR.Z.TAYLOR HAYGOOD--died at his home in the southern part of town last Friday,the 18th,after being in a low state of health for quite awhile.He was 74 years of age and is survived by his wife; son,Marion HAYGOOD,of Yoakum,Texas,and one daughter,Mrs.J.B.GROSS,here.Funeral services were held at the home,burial in Rose Hill Cemetery. MR.JOE STEELMAN--died at his home on Royal Street in Jackson on Wednesday,May 23rd.He was 39 years of age and lived in Jackson for many years,having moved there from Humboldt.He was a brother of A.P.STEELMAN,of this city. GEORGE BALDY--a young nephew of Dr.J.H.MEEKS,died in Fresco,Calif.,on Friday,and the remains were brought back and buried at Henderson,Tenn. PASSES TO REWARD--News dispatches in the daily press of Tuesday,brought the report that HON.JOE FOLK, born and reared in Brownsville; one-time Governor of Missouri and later candidate for the Presidency and world-figure head,had died at his sister in New York.Death was due to a stroke of paralysis he suffered in August. FORMER GIBSON COUNTIAN KILLED--WALTER GRIGGS was killed yesterday morning in the explosion of the powder plant at Thebes,Ill.Four others were killed.The men worked for the Herculas Powder Co. Mr.GRIGGS was born and reared near Trenton and was 23 years of age.The explosion of the plant was so intense that no trace of the men,machinery or building was left.A gaping hole in the ground was the sole evidence left.( In next issue-he is referred to as Wade GRIGGS,son of J.B.GRIGGS,prominent farmer from the White Hall community.Burial was in Concord Cemetery.Place of accident given as Fayville,Ill.) ALAMO GIRL HIT BY AUTOMOBILE--Memphis,Tenn.,June 11.MISS LOIS BRANCH,19,school teacher of Alamo,Tenn.,and a summer student at the West Tennessee State Normal School,was fatally injured yesterday afternoon,when struck and run over by a passenger car as she stepped aboard a passenger bus in front of the Oakville Sanitarum on the Pigeon Roost Road.The young woman was dragged 15 to 20 feet,witnwssws said.Falling beneath the car,both wheels ran over her.The driver of the car failed to stop,witnesses declared,but kept running at undiminished speed until lost from view.A few moments after her arrival at the hospital,C.R.CARTER,51,of 165 Nebraska,appeared and told the attendants he was the driver of the car.She leaves a twin sister.Lorine ********************* FRIDAY JUNE 22,1923 TRENTON--MRS.MATTIE E.LEWIS,wife of Ed E.LEWIS,died at her home on High Street Monday afternoon after an illness of two weeks.Funeral services were conducted Tuesday afternoon at the Methodist Church,the remains laid to rest in Oakland Cem.Her husband and several children survive her. MR.JOHN BRANCH--died at his home three miles north of Trenton on Monday night,June 25th,after a short illness,and was buried at Bethlehem graveyard Tuesday.He was 40 years of age.He leaves six small motherless children,his wife having died only two months ago.He was a nephew of Messrs.Jas.& Jesse BRANCH and Miss Mollie BRANCH of this city. ********************* FRIDAY JULY 13,1923 GIBSON--MRS.W.A.BRATCHER,widow of the late W.A.BRATCHER,died Saturday morning at the home of her daughter,Mrs.Frank WOODS.Some months ago she was stricken with paralysis and two weeks ago she suffered the second stroke from which she never recovered.The funeral service was held at the residence,the body was laid to rest in White Rose Cemetery.She leaves three sons,Dave, Dorsey,and Grover BRATCHER;and two daughters,Mrs.Frank WOODS,of Gibson and Mrs.Richard ARNOLD,of Bells. GIBSON--Mr.& Mrs.W.C.THOMPSON received a telegram from Kilso,Wash.,stating that their son,Paul had been burned to death.He joined the U.S.Army five years ago and saw service overseas,but returned to Kilso after the war was over and married there.He had planned a visit home with his bride next month.The body was buried at Kilso.Besides his wife,he is survived by his parents and several sisters and brothers. KILLS WIFE AND BABE,THEN SUICIDES--JOHN A.ROE,of Humboldt,shot and instantly killed his wife,GAZELLE ROE,and mortally wounded his baby daughter,DORIS GAZELLE ROE,at a residence in Memphis Monday morning about 9 o'clock,and then placing the point of his pistol to his temple,blew out his own brains.The baby was carried to a hospital where she died four hours after the shooting.Young ROE's wife left him about three months ago,going to the home of one of her sisters,Mrs.HARRISON,in Memphis.ROE went to Memphis it is said,ti try and induce the wife to return home with him.Mrs.ROE evidently promised to return with him,as a partially packed suitcase gave mute evidence.The promise was probably given through fear,as Mrs.ROE soon slipped out and started to gain protection,carrying her baby with her.Just as she had gotten in front of the home of J.M.LAMMEY at 212 Cedar St.,Chelsa,ROE began to overtake her.Greatly fearing him,Mrs.ROE ran into the LAMMEY home,crying out to hide her.ROE ran in after her,overtaking her in the dining room he shot her,the ball taking effect in her head.She fell to the floor mortally wounded or dead.The infant fell under her and it's temple was crushed.ROE then stood over her body and fired another shot or two into her body.One of the shots passed entirely through the body of the woman and then through the baby. Capt.LEE ordered ROE to raise his hands which he did,placing the gun to his head and fired.The bodies were taken in charge by Collins-Sturla Funeral Home and prepared for burial.All three were brought to Humboldt Monday night,accompanied by Mr.J.W.ROE,father of John W.ROE and City Marshal SENTER,who had gone to Memphis on the first train following the tragedy.The bodies were taken to the former home of the dead from which place funeral services were held,burial in Rose Hill Cemetery.John A.ROE was reared in Humboldt and was one of a family of several children.He was married to Gazelle GULLETTE about three years,and one child,the one killed,blessed the union. MR.J.H.BURRESS--died at his home near Rutherford Monday,and the body was brought to the home of Mr.Collins BURRESS Monday evening and buried in the family lot in Friendship Cemetery Tuesday morning.Mr.BURRESS had been in poor health for many months and the cause of his death was Brights'Disease.He was born March 14th,1864,was 59 years of age,was born and reared near Milan,the son of Solomon BURRESS.He taught school with the exception of eight years that he served as County Court Clerk and for the past two years has been teaching in the 19th district.He was married to Miss Mabel NETHERLY in 1905,and to this union four boys and three girls were born. IN MEMORY--MARY L.EAVES,age 79 years,9 months,and 18 days,departed this life on Thursday afternoon,July 5th,after an illness of several months.She leaves a son;two daughters and relatives to mourn her death.Her home for the past several years was with her son,S.W.EAVES,three miles north of Humboldt.Her remains were interred in Rose Hill Cemetery. MRS.ANNIE GADSBY--widow of J.E.GADSBY,of Memphis,died at the home of her neice,Mrs.Ella COOP,in Humboldt on Friday afternoon,July 6th at 6 p.m.Deceased was 79 years of age,and is survived by three sons,J.O.,and George,of Memphis,and Simon,of Mississippi; two daughters,Mrs.CROOK,of Hattiesburg,Miss.,and Mrs.J.K.McINNIS,of Meridian,Miss.The remains were laid to rest in Henderson beside her husband. ********************** FRIDAY JULY 20,1923 PROF.CLYDE MOORE--age 34 years,a well-known school teacher of Crockett County,was drowned shortly after noon in the South Forked Deer River,two miles west of Bells,when he stepped into a deep hole.He was helping drive fish into a net when the accident happened.The body was recovered two hours later.He is survived by his widowed mother;brothers and sisters.Burial in Bellview Cemetery. GIBSON--MRS.LUCETTA CAROLINA DAVIS,70, wife of the late W.G.DAVIS,died August 16th,at her home on Main Street,after several months illness.Mrs.DAVIS was born February 5,1853 in Athens,Ala.She professed religion and joined Eldad Baptist Church when quite young.In 1893 she moved her membership to Gibson.She was united in marriage to W.G.DAVIS August 13th,1879,and was the mother of six children,five of whom survive; Rev.Roswell DAVIS,of Memphis,Misses Olive,Lizzie,Gladys and Mary DAVIS of Gibson; one brother,Joe PRICE,of Manilia,Ark.,also survives her.The body was laid to rest in White Rose Cemetery. STEVE COLE--well-known business man of Milan,died suddenly from apoplexy last Friday.He was 44 years of age,and a man held in high esteem.Several months ago,his brother,Zeb COLE,died in the same way at his home two miles north of here.He is survived by his wife,three children,an aged mother,two sisters and other relatives. JACKSON,TENN.,AUG.25--ROBERT F.SPRAGINS,48,prominent attorney of this section,died at his home from apoplexy.He is survived by his wife and three sons,Hearn,Wendell and Lamar SPRAGINS.His parents,Mr.& Mrs.T.J.SPRAGINS,of this city also survive. JAMES LEWIS HUGHES--traveling salesman of Jackson,died suddenly yesterday of heart trouble while working in his garden.He was 63 years old.He was born near Bardwell,Ky.When he was a young man he moved to Jackson.In 1881 he was married to Miss Ida LINDSEY.Four children were fruits of this union: Dr.Frank L.HUGHES,deceased,Miss Ethel HUGHES,Miss Ruth HUGHES,who died several years ago,and Mrs.J.T.HERRON,Jr.Alson surviving is a sister,Mrs.Mary WILLIAMS,of Excelsior Springs,Mo. Two brothers,D.W.HUGHES,of Fulton,Ky.,and William HUGHES,founder of the Branham & Hughes Preparatory School for boys at Spring Hill,Tenn.,who died sometime ago. FORMER MAYOR DEAD--KNOXVILLE,TENN.SEPT.17.SAMUEL G.HEISKELL,65 years,historian,legislator and five times mayor of Knoxville,died here this morning after a long illness.He was the author of "Andrew Jackson and Early Tennessee History." BELLS--A telephone message was received here Sunday that OTHO CROSSNOE was found dead in a boarding house in Jackson.His father,D.A.CROSSNOE and son,Lee,left at once for Jackson and had the remains prepared for burial and brought to the residence of his father on Rt.#3 Sunday night.Burial was in Bellview Cem.He leaves a wife,six children,father,mother and two brothers. *********************** FRIDAY OCTOBER 5,1923 THE REMAINS--of MR.FRANK WITT were brought here from Memphis last Saturday afternoon and buried in Zion Cemetery Sunday morning.He was the only son of Mr.& Mrs.John WITT,of near Humboldt and was living in Memphis when taken with his last illness.About three weeks ago he suffered an attack of what seemed to be apoplexy and was taken to a Memphis hospital.He continued in an unconscious condition,however,until the end came.It is said the doctors never came to any positive agreements as to the cause of his illness.Deceased was 28 years of age,survived by his wife,parents and three sisters.He was reared at the old family home near Humboldt.He was married about three years ago to Miss Dora INGRAM,of Jackson. GIBSON--MR.JIM MADDEN,age 38,died at the Baptist Hospital,Memphis,Thursday.He was operated on last Thursday for gall stones and grew continually worse until his death.The remains will be carried to Waverly today (Friday) and buried.He leaves a wife,Ida,one daughter,Rubie; father & mother; three brothers,Charlie,Will And Luck MADDEN; and twin sisters,Maggie & May MADDEN. DR.& MRS.A.F.COOPER--of Memphis,were guests of Mr.& Mrs.W.M.DUNLAP Friday.They were en route from Trenton,where they attended the death of their daughter,MRS.FANNIE LINSEY COOPER PINSHON.Mrs.PINSHON died in San Francisco,and her remains were accompanied to Trenton by her infant son and nurse,Miss SULLIVAN.The little PINSHON baby returned to Memphis with its grandparents,Dr.& Mrs.COOPER. ************************ FRIDAY OCTOBER 12,1923 MRS.RUTH HARRIS WITT--sister of Mr.Lee HARRIS,of this city,died at her home in Montgomery,Ala.,on Sunday,October 7th,after an illness of some duration.Mrs.WITT is survived by one son,her husband having preceded her to the grave about a year ago. GIBSON--MARY JANE,the little daughter of Mr.& Mrs.James WARMATH,of Madison County,died last Saturday after a brief illness.The funeral services were held at the residence,burial in White Rose Cem.Mrs.WARMATH will be remembered as Maud WILLIAMS,formerly of Gibson. PLUNGES FROM ROOF OF ASYLUM--BOLIVAR,TENN.OCT.5.In the throes of weird hallucinations that took a suicidal turn,GAYLOR PARRY,21,of Keeling,Tenn.,a patient in the Western State Hospital for the Insane near here,jumped from the roof of the four story institution at 10:30 a.m.while attendents and patients looked on helplessly.PARRY lived with his widowed mother at Keeling.It is said that the family is prominent in that section.PARRY,while he was in the asylum,was a pay patient.The remains were forwarded to Keeling for burial. ************************ FRIDAY OCTOBER 19,1923 MEDINA--The death of MR.JOSHUA PALMER,which occurred Monday after a lingering illness removes one of Medina's oldest citizens.He was 70,survived by his wife and several children.Burial was in Centerville Cemetery. MEDINA--Mr.H.E.GOLDSMITH was called Wednesday to his old home in Crockett county by the death of his mother,MRS.MARION GOLDSMITH,which occurred Tuesday night at her home near Bells. FRUITLAND--MRS.GUS COLEMAN,of near Fruitland,who was carried to a Memphis hospital on Wednesday of last week for an operation,she having been in ill health for sometime,was brought home a corpse on last Saturday,she having died under the operation.The funeral services were conducted at the Fruitland Baptist Church Sunday by Dr.GUY,of Jackson,burial at Eldad. FRUITLAND--Our little town was overshadowed with sadness and gloom last Thursday morning when the sad news was flashed over the wires that JAMES HUGHS was accidently run over and killed by a train at Tammes,Ill.James was en route to Columbia,Ill.,to join Irly POWELL,who is at work at that place and to secure work for himself,when in some way he was run over and killed.It is said after he was mangled he talked for sometime and told the train crew his name and his parents name and where they lived.When the telegram was received of his death,through the suggestion of some of the good citizens,the Bank wired $160 to pay the burial expenses,which was secured by T.A.WARE and others. JUDGE SWIGGART DIES AT NASHVILLE--JUDGE WM.H.SWIGGART,of Union City,one of the foremost lawyers and jurists in Tennessee,died at the Protestant Hospital in Nashville,following an operation for a serious stomach trouble.He is survived by his wife; one son,W.H.Jr.,assistant attorney-general of Tennessee; three daughters,Mrs.Harrison H.SHOULDERS and Mrs.James D.PORTER,all of Nashville,and Miss Mary SWIGGART,of Union City.Judge SWIGGART was just one month past 74 years of age.He came to Nashville several days ago to consult his son-in- law,Dr.H.H.SHOULDERS,one of the leading surgeons of the state. MRS.ELIZABETH McCOLLUM--aged 73,died at her home in Milan Thursday morning of the infirmaties of old age.Interment in Oakwood Cem.She leaves three brothers and other relatives. MRS.F.M.GOLDSMITH--aged about 80 years,died October 17th at her home near Cypress Church after several weeks illness.She was a member of the Methodist Church at Cypress.She leaves her husband; two sons,Archie,of Fruitvale and Edgar,of Medina; and one daughter,Mrs.Ada CLARK,of near Cypress; and several grandchildren.The burial took place at the Cypress Church,services conducted by Rev.ROBINSON and Rev.NUNN. COLORED BOY SCALDED TO DEATH--EDDIE JETT,colored boy,about 16 years of age,fell into the steaming vat at the veneering mill of B.C.Jarrell & Co.,on Wednesday evening and was so badly scalded that death resulted the next morning.The boy was employed at the accident,but the accident occurred after quitting time Wednesday. MEDINA--The body of MR.BEN STARK,a former citizen of this place,reached here Monday morning from Milwaukee,Wisc.,where his death occurred while a patient in the Government Hospital at that city.He was 47 years of age and survived by two brothers,Richard & B.F.SPARKS,of Memphis.Burial in Hope Hill. THE REMAINS--of MR.J.H.SCOTT,formerly head of the Government Weather Bureau of Memphis,who died on Friday of last week,were brought back to Yorkville,this county and buried on Saturday of last week.Mr.SCOTT was related to Mrs.W.H.McKNIGHT of Humboldt,having married one of her neices. BABY DIES IN FIRE--Clarksville,Tenn.Oct.27th.Overlooked as her mother with three other children fled from the house,the two-year-old daughter of Mr.& Mrs.N.L.CHADWICK was burned to death at Danville,Tenn.,early this morning.The husband had come to Erin on an early train,leaving the family asleep.It is thought that before leaving,he kindled a fire in a grate or heater,and it was from this the house caught fire. *********************** FRIDAY NOVEMBER 9,1923 ALAMO--Relatives received the message Wednesday of the death of MR.WILL N.TRIMBLE,which occurred Tuesday in his home at Milan,from the effects of paralysis.He was 69 years of age. ALAMO--WEST ROBERTS,80,died in his home in Maury City about noon Saturday.The funeral was held at Pond Creek Church,the Masons in charge.He is survived by two daughters,Miss Mattie Lou ROBERTS and Mrs.Jim HARRIS; and two sons,Harvey & George HARRIS,of Jackson. CLARKSVILLE,TENN.,NOV.7--MRS.LEONARD HALL,a 50-year-old resident of Robertson County,died in intense agony at 9 p.m. Tuesday night,of burns received five hours previous when her clothing became ignited from an open fireplace in which she was replenishing the fire.A daughter was severely burned during the struggle with her mother in an effort to extinguish the flames,and another member of the family with a quilt was unable to overtake the woman.Mrs.HALL's husband preceded her to the grave a year ago.She is survived by five children. SOCIETY--Mr.& Mrs.Robert BROWN & Mrs.S.C.HILL attended the funeral of MRS.SID BIRDSONG at Browns Church near Jackson Tuesday.Mrs.BIRDSONG died very suddenly Monday. ************************* FRIDAY NOVEMBER 30,1923 BEAUTIFUL LIFE COMES TO END--MRS.GRACE SENTER JARRELL,wife of Mr.C.T.JARRELL,died at the family home at the corner of Main St. & 16th Ave.,Sunday morning,after an illness of some days.She was taken ill about two weeks ago,preceding her death,with what at first thoght to be nervous and physical breakdown,but which was later discovered to be an abcess of the brain.She grew gradually worse from the inception of the malady and was unconscious for several days before the end came.She was about 50 years of age,and is survived by her father,Mr.N.A.SENTER; two daughters,Mrs.Herbert L.FOSSEY,of Sagomore,Pa.,and Mrs.Aubrey H.WILLIAMS,of this city; two brothers,John M.SENTER and Judge J.D.SENTER,also of Humboldt.All these were by her bedside during her illness except her father,who was seriously ill at the same time.Funeral services were held at the residence,burial in Rose Hill Cem. ************************ FRIDAY DECEMBER 7,1923 ALAMO--Mrs.Henry EDENTON received the message Friday morning that her father,DR.STINSON,of Lexington,had died suddening. TRAFFIC ACCIDENT FATAL--MR.SAMUEL S.CANTRELL,58,received infuries in a traffic accident Tuesday afternoon,which resulted in his death Wednesday afternoon at 4:30.He was driving east on Mitchell street with a buggy and horse and is said to have been on the wrong side of the street.Bob RAGAN,colored,who drives a taxi for Ragan & Bennett,left the O.K.filling station and turned onto Mitchell Street,headed on the right side of the thoroughfare,but seeing that there would be no room to pass,attempted to turn and pass on the wrong side of the buggy,when the latter vehicle was struck and tilted.Mr.CANTRELL was either thrown or attempted to jump and struck the curb with great force.While RAGAN is technically guilty of violating a city law,some witnesses stated that this was done trying to prevent an accident.Funeral services were held Thursday.He leaves a wife and several children. MEDINA--Many friends from Medina attended the funeral of MR.EARL THOMPSON conducted by Rev.WEST at Antioch Monday afternoon.He lived east of town in the Friendship community.He was 42 years of age,is survived by his wife,one child,an aged father,two sisters,and three brothers. MEDINA--Friends are saddened Wednesday morning to learn of the sudden death of MR.ABE McFARLAND,son of Mr.& Mrs.John McFARLAND,living east of town on the Spring Creek road.Funeral plans are not complete. Coupled with the sorrow of this death is the grief and anxiety felt by the children over the disappearance of their aged father,MR.WEBB,who continuously watched and waiting by his suffering companion until his mind became so distracted Saturday evening that he slipped out of the house and away unobserved into the night.His whereabouts are still unknown. GADSDEN--MR.ALLEN MATTHEWS passed away Saturday at his home near Mason's Grove,after a lingering illness.He leaves a wife and six children. ************************* FRIDAY DECEMBER 21,1923 DIES IN NEW YORK--After a brief illness,FRANK RUST,son of Mr.Vernon RUST,of Oklahoma and Mrs.C.T.SHANE,of this city,died at a hospital in Albany,N.Y.Sunday night.His mother was with him when the end came and reached here Wednesday morning with the remains,which were buried in Rose Hill Cemetery,after a service at the family home on Osborne Street.He was living in Albany,where for several years he had engaged in the automobile business.Taken violently ill by an acute appendicities attack,he was hurried to the hospital for an operation,the operation came too late as the appendix was ruptured before the surgeon reached it.He was married several years ago in Jackson,Tenn.,to Miss TUCKER,who survives him. ANSWERS LAST CALL--MR.SAM C.LEWIS,of Humboldt,died at his home at the corner of 17th Ave & Mitchell St early Sunday morning.He was in his 59th year,is survived by his wife; two daughters,Misses Katrina & Nina LEWIS,still under the parential rooftree; one son,Nolan LEWIS,who lives in California.Also by his old mother,who had long made her home with him.Services were held at the residence,burial in Rose Hill Cemetery. NEGRO,105 YEARS OLD DIES--Milan,Tenn.,Dec.15.,HANS BARKSDALE,negro,who had lived to the remarkable age of 105 years,died at his home Thursday of pneumonia.His children,grandchildren and great-grandchildren number over 100.This man was born in 1818,six years after the second war with Great Britian and was over 40 years old at the time of the Civil War.
