FRIDAY APRIL 22,1921 MRS.NANNIE ARNOLD--wife of the late Frank ARNOLD,died at the home of her daughter,Mrs.F.WOODS on College Street,Wednesday of last week,after several weeks illness.Services were conducted at the residence,interment at Spring Hill Cemeter.Mrs.ARNOLD was 75 years old,she is survived by several children. MRS.JOHN CLARK--died at her home a few miles south of town on Friday of last week,after a long illness.Services were held at the residence,interment at Oakland Cemetery.Deceased is survived by her husband,two sons,Sollie and Alvin CLARK;four daughters,Mrs.PALMER,Mrs.Lila SAPPINGTON,Mrs.COLE,and Miss Leitha CLARK. MRS.JOHN NOWELL--died at her home Monday evening.Services were conducted at the Baptist Church,interment in Oakland Cemetery.Her husband and several children survive her. MRS.W.L.COPLIN--died suddenly at the family home on 12th Avenue this morning about 2 o'clock.She was 36 years of age and a member of the Church of Christ.She was a daughter of Mr.& Mrs.W.Z.RAINES,and is survived by her husband;one brother,John RAINES;and her parents;also one step-daughter,Fay COPLIN.The funeral will be held Saturday morning at the residence Saturday morning,the remains will be interred in Raines Cemetery. MRS.Ruby FISHER,of Memphis,attended the funeral of her brother,George GARRETT,who was brought home from France and buried in Rose Hill Cem. ************************** FRIDAY MAY 6,1921 DEATH--MRS.FRANK X.FOLTZ is dead.Mrs.FOLTZ is survived by her husband;three daughters and a son.The family came here from Union City about thirty years ago,and the children grew up here.From the very start,the community interests were her interests.Tomorrow at 10:30 o'clock,the funeral services will be held at the Church of the Sacred Heart,to be conducted by Father REID,assisted by Father MARAUTH,of Memphis,after which the remains will be laid to rest in Rose Hill Cemetery. DEATH--EMMA JANE COPLIN,wife of W.L.COPLIN Sr.,died Monday of pneumonia,and her remains were interred at Bethel Tuesday.Deceased is survived by her husband and seven children;Dr.W.L.,T.A.,and J.H.COPLIN,of Humboldt;Mrs.J.H.BUCKNER,of near town;and Mrs.J.T.DUNGAN,Mrs.J.R.DUNGAN,and C.G.COPLIN,of Jackson;also 16 grandchildren;and three great grandchildren. MEDINA --Many friends from Medina attended the funeral services of BUD SHELTON at Hope Hill Monday afternoon.He is survived by his wife;a daughter;and three sons;also two sisters,Mrs.Robert HAWKINS,of Humboldt,and Mrs.Mattie JAMES,of Medina;and a brother,Will SHELTON,of Greenfield. MRS.AL WAINWRIGHT--aged 78,died at her home on La Salle Heights Tuesday morning at 9:30.Her body was laid to rest in the Alamo Cemetery.Mrs.Will PITNER,of Tampa,Fla.,spent last week at the bedside of Mrs.WAINWRIGHT,her mother. DR.E.B.JOHNSON--was called to Lebanon Sunday on account of the death of his father,Rev.A.E.JOHNSON,which occurred Sunday at 10 p.m.He suffered a stroke of paralysis sometime ago from which he never recovered.He was buried in the family burying ground near Lebanon. ************************** FRIDAY MAY 13,1921 MRS.J.W.RAMSEY--died at her home on Brownsville Street last Tuesday evening.Services were conducted at the residence Saturday,burial at Oakland Cemetery.She was in her 74th year,a consistant member of the Methodist Church.She is survived by six daughters and one son,all of whom were with her at the last. MRS.L.L.COX--"Aunt Mary Sewell," as she was generally known,who was reported sick last week,died and was buried at Cox's Chapel last Wednesday.She was step-mother and aunt of Messrs.W.A.,M.P.,S.L.,and T.A.COX;Mrs.J.M.CRAIG and Miss Lillie COX;also aunt of Rev.Willie SEWELL,of the M.E.Church,and his sister,Mrs.J.A.THOMAS,of this county.She was near ninety years old at her death.Funeral services were conducted by Mr.DRAPER,of Memphis,a member of the Pastor RUSSELL Church,by request of the children. MRS.G.T.RAY--was called to Jackson Friday on account of the death of Mrs.RYAN. ****************************** FRIDAY MAY 20,1921 A SAD ACCIDENT--occurred a mile west of town last Friday afternoon,when a tractor machine turned over on Mr.JOHN CARNE,while he was demonstrating it on the field of Ab TAYLOR and S.CRISP,killing him instantly.Services was conducted at the residence.Local news connected to funeral: Dr.R.L.PARK and wife,of Jackson,attended the funeral and burial of Mr.John CARNE Sunday. Jimmie CARNE & wife,of Jackson,attended the funeral and burial of Mr.John CARNE Sunday.(Jimmie was his son.) Jim HANNAH,of Louisville,Ky.,attended the funeral and burial of Mr.John CARNE Sunday. Miss Dee CARNE,of Nebraska visited her sister,Mrs.John CARNE this week. Mrs.YOUNG attended the funeral and burial of her brother,John CARNE Sunday. Also attending,but relation not given was Mrs.Rose CARNE and son of Kentucky. AFTER A LONG--varied and eventful career,DR.N.I.HESS died last Saturday at his home in Bells,aged 81 years.Dr.HESS came to Gadsden in 1866 and settled here to practice his profession.He remained here about 20 years and has lived in Bells many years.He leaves his fourth wife and ten children. (related item)Esq.& Mrs.W.M.DUNLAP were called to Bells Monday to attend the funeral of their relative,Dr.N.I.HESS. DEATH--Dr.N.I.HESS died at his home in Bells,Tenn.,May 14th after an illness of several days,aged 80 years.He was born in Trenton,Tenn.,in 1840.His father and mother;Dr.N.I.HESS Sr.,and Miss Kittie HILL were married in 1839.He was educated in what was then called Andrew College.When about 21 years of age,he and his brothers.Andrew and John joined the Confederate Army and served in the army until the close of the war.He was wounded in the shoulder at the battle of Franklin,Tenn.At the close of the war,he and brother,Andrew studied medicine and John entered the ministry of the Baptist Church.Dr.HESS was greatly beloved by all his patients as well as by the citizens of the town and community where he lived and practiced medicine for 55 years.He is survived by his wife;four sons;six daughters;one brother;one sister;24 grandchildren;and a host of other relatives and friends,who mourn his death. ******************************* FRIDAY MAY 27,1921 NEWBERN,TENN.,MAY 24TH--R.L.HUIE,38 years old,was shot and killed at 10:30 a.m. today,following an argument with Frank and Arthur TUCHER,well-known farmers of the 5th district,over the trespassing of HUIE on the TUCKER cloverfield.The TUCKER brothers were arrested on charges of murder and are in custody in Dyersburg. TIPTONVILLE,TENN.,MAY 24TH--FRANK GRIFFIN,22 years,a member of one of Lake County's most prominent families,was drowned about 6 p.m. today while swimming in the "washout," a bathing pool near here.His body was recovered by Dr.M.R.DONALDSON,who made five dives before he was successful.Young GRIFFIN,in the company of Dr.DONALDSON;Roy GRIFFIN,his brother:Walter GRIFFIN,his cousin;and Wilbur WALKER,had been in swimming a short time when Roy and Walter noticed Frank was in danger,they went to his rescue,he pulled them under twice.The water was a little over a foot over his head,and he being a good swimmer,must have suffered a cramp.He was a son of Dr.& Mrs.R.W.GRIFFIN. MR.WM.A.BRATCHER--about 65 years,died at his home here Tuesday.He had been confined to his room about three years from a stroke of paralysis.He leaves his wife;sons,Dave,of Beach Bluff,Dorsey,of Corinth,Miss.,and Grover,of Gibson;daughters,Mrs.Frank WOODS and Miss Flossie BRATCHER,of Gibson.The funeral service was held at the residence by Bro.HUEY,burial in White Rose Cemetery. UNCLE WALTER JONES--an old time and generally known and respected colored man,of Humboldt,died Monday.His death was due to infirminities of age.He had done gardening for years and had many friends among the white people,who greatly regret his death. MILAN,TENN.,MAY 24TH--MRS.NAOMI STEPPE,30 years,was brought here Sunday afternoon from Memphis,where she died in a hospital.Her home was in Bemis,Tenn.Her mother was Mrs.COVINGTON,of Milan.She is survived by her husband;several children;mother;sisters and brothers.Burial in Oakwood Cemetery. MILAN,TENN.,MAY 24TH--MRS.FANNY MAY McPHERSON,28 years,was brought here today and carried to Popular Springs for funeral and burial.She is survived by husband;two children;parents,a brother and sister. MRS.ELSIE BENNETT PINDAR--wife of Mr.Ira PINDAR,died at the home of her mother,Mrs.Lillie BENNETT on Mitchell Ave.Tuesday afternoon.Mrs.PINDAR,who was a sufferer of asthma,was stricken with an unusually severe attack on Monday and this was complicated with heart trouble.She is survived by her husband;a little babe; her mother; and a brother.Elsie BENNETT married Ira PINDAR about two years ago and went to Florida to live.Recently they returned to Humboldt and were living with Mrs.BENNETT when she died.Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery. ******************************** FRIDAY JUNE 3,1921 TRENTON; CAPT.JOHN R.DANCE--died a his home,a few miles west of town Wednesday,after a long illness.Funeral services were held at the Baptist Church,interment took place in Oakwood Cemetery.He was a Confederate veteran.His surviving children are Russell DANCE,of Corinth,Miss.,Drewey DANCE,Mrs.BANDY,Mrs.ROSS,Mrs.GRIGSBY and Miss Georgia DANCE. MR.JOHN E.CAMPBELL--of Humboldt,died early Saturday morning.He was 70 years old and is survived by his wife; sons,L.R.,Zach,and J.E.Jr.; daughters,Mrs.R.I.LONG, Mrs.J.H.LANNOM,and Mrs.Roy JOHNSON;brothers,Dr.Joe CAMPBELL and Levy CAMPBELL,of Rutledge.He came to Humboldt in 1873 from Rutledge,Tenn.,was married to Miss Jenny E.HESS in 1877 and lived on a farm north of town for a number of years.He came to Humboldt along in the nineties,opening a lumber yard.Burial in Rose Hill Cemetery.(born April 6,1851 in Grainger Co.,Tenn.,married Miss HESS on Jan.7,1879,died May 28,1921.) ALAMO; UNCLE JIM PERRY--died late Wednesday afternoon at his home near Maury Junction.He was in his 88th year.Funeral services were held Thursday and his remains laid to rest in the Perry Cemetery.John PERRY,County Court Clerk,is the son of Mr.PERRY. GADSDEN; MRS.PRIEST PERMENTER--died very suddenly last Tuesday night and her remains were given burial at Salem Wednesday. ANSWERS LAST CALL;CAPT.JOHN R.DANCE--died at his home Wednesday night,in the 16th district,following a prolonged illness of several months.He had for a long time been a prominent citizen of Gibson County and a leader in the councils of those who fought in the Confederate army. He was born in 1846,near Murfreesboro,Tenn.,his parents later moving to West Tennessee and settling eight west of Trenton.At the age of 15,when a mere school boy,he enlisted in the Confederate army as a volunteer. After it was over,he married in 1865,Sarah Elizabeth DODSON,who died in February,1870,leaving a baby boy,Russell,who now lives in Corinth,Miss. A second wedding occurred in December 1870,when he married Miss Martha Rachael HILLSMAN,daughter of the late M.HILLSMAN,who performed the ceremony of not only this,but his former marriage. Ten years of his life were spent in Brownsville,Tenn.,where he engaged in the mercantile business,but upon the epidemic of yellow fever arising, he returned to Gibson County,where he spent the remainder of his life on the farm just three miles from Trenton. His oldest son,from the second marriage,Hillsman DANCE, died December 1912,and a daughter, Mrs.Louise FLOWERS,died in March,1917. The surviving children are; Russell; Drury DANCE and Miss Georgie DANCE,who reside in the DANCE home west of Trenton; Mrs.H.W.BANDY and Mrs.R.E.ROSS,of Trenton; and Mrs.H.L.GRIGSBY, of Dickson. At his request,the funeral was preached by son-in-law, Rev.F.C.FLOWERS, of Lake Charles,LA. His second wife died in May,1916. ******************************** FRIDAY JUNE 10,1921 GIBSON;MRS.P.B.JONES AND DAUGHTER--Margaret,left Monday for St.Louis,where they will attend the funeral of her brother-in-law,MAJ.GEO.E.HILYARD,who lost his life in the recent war in France. GIBSON;WRAPPED IN THE FLAG OF THE COUNTRY--for which he gave his life,the body of PRENTIS FLY arrived today at 12:26 from the long journey overseas,accompanied by a U.S.A.escort from Hoboken,N.Y.,where this body with many others landed June 2nd.He was a son of Mr.& Mrs.L.E.FLY,of this city.On his arrival overseas,he was taken sick and died in a hospital un France in October,1918.Burial will be in White Rose Cemetery.Besides his parents,he is survived by one sister,Miss Zelma FLY; Fred FLY,deputy sheriff,of Gibson County,E.B.FLY,of Newbern,and Earl FLY,of Madison County. ********************************* FRIDAY JUNE 17,1921 MR.A.C.BLAKE--died at his home in Jackson Wednesday evening.Funeral services held at the home and the remains will be brought to Humboldt Friday and buried in Rose Hill Cemetery.He leaves his mother;wife;and little daughter. GIBSON;MR.J.W.BUFORD--about 55 years old,died at his home east of here Friday after a long illness.He leaves four daughters.Funeral services were held at White Rose Cemetery,where the body was laid to rest beside his wife,who died about four years ago. GADSDEN;MOSE FRANK COX--of Oliver Springs,died on June 4th.He was a brother of Mrs.M.E.RICHARDSON,Mrs.R.B.GRIGGS and J.R.COX.He was reared to manhood in this community and resided here a number of years before going to East Tennessee,where he made his home for more than twenty years. COLUMBIA,TENN.,JUNE 12TH--Thrown from their automobile when it plunged over a 25- foot embankment on the Nashville pike,near Duck River bridge today;Perry BENNETT,Earle HALLE and James SIMPSON are dead,and Carl JOHNSON is in a local hospital. COXVILLE--Our hearts were saddened last Saturday evening when news came to us that our brother,Frank,was dead.The first to break a circle of brothers and sisters of seven for over fifty years,when sweet little sister,Dora was called away.MOSE FRANK COX was born in Gibson County 69 years ago,but for the past several years had made his home in the eastern part of this state,Oliver Springs,where he served continuously as Magistrate and City Recorder for over 20 years.Besides a wife and three children,still in their teens,he leaves two married sons;James C.COX,of this place,and John R.COX,of Oliver Springd;and four married daughters,Mrs.HUTCHISON,of Harriman,Mrs.COZART,of Cincinniti, Mrs.E.S.COX,and Mrs.J.T.JAMES,of this place.Surviving brothers & sisters are;Mrs.M.E.RICHARDSON,of Gadsden,Mrs.R.B.GRIGGS,of Mason Grove,J.C.COX,of Ridgely,J.R.COX,of Coxville,Mrs.D.I.FAIRLESS,of Trenton and Mrs.Tom WILLIAMS,of Sanford,Fla. UNION CITY,TENN.,JUNE 14;JAKE CALDWELL--57,committed suicide this morning by hanging himself with a sheet,according to a telegram just received here from the hospital at Bolivar,Tenn.,where he was carried yesterday.He is survived by his wife;three sons,John,Jake and Benjamin;three daughters,Grace,Mattie,and Etna;one brother,John;and one sister,Mrs.Etna MARSHALL. ************************************ FRIDAY JUNE 24,1921 COXVILLE ITEMS--Word came to us last Thursday that W.T.COX was dead.He was the last survivor of a large and well-known family,his parents,Mose and Mary COX,having settled here in the year 1826,and reared a family of twelve children to be grown and married.He was 70 years old and for a number of years had made his home in Round Rock and Bartlett,Texas,where he engaged in the mercantile business,until a few years ago,when he retired from active duty,good fortune having smiled upon him,besides blessing him with a good wife;two sons;and a daughter,who survive him. ************************************ THURSDAY JUNE 30,1921 MR.O.C.SHARP IS DEAD--He died at the home of his sister,Mrs.E.L.FOX on Wednesday morning.He had been in ill health for more than a year.He was 65 years old and is survived by one daughter,Mrs.J.W.McGLATHERY; three sisters,Mrs.E.L.FOX, Mrs.Thomas POLK,of Jackson,and Mrs.R.N.WARMACK,of St.Louis.Born and raised in Humboldt.Services were held at the Methodist Church,after which the remains will be buried beside those of his wife,who died several years ago. GADSDEN;THE REMAINS OF TOM ARMES,who was killed in action in France,reached Gadsden Saturday and were conveyed to the home of his brother,S.H.ARMES.Funeral services were at Raines Cemetery Sunday afternoon.The pall-bearers in uniform were:Robert BLURTON,Leonard BOYD,Lonnie MOBLEY,Claude WILLIAMS,Earl DUNLAP,Harry WILSON,Oscar BOYD,Elbert BROWN,Charley SIMMONS and Roy HUMPHREYS. ALAMO--Our community was saddened this morning when it was learned that D.WELLS HARRIS had died at his home on West Main Street at 7:45. MRS.MARY JANE LONG--born March 19,1859,widow of B.C.LONG,died at her home near Oakfield,June 25th,of bronchial pneumonia.She was 62 years of age,survived by Mrs.George L.LONG,Miss Rosie ELLISON,Mrs.Ezra D?LY,and W.B.,J.C.,and O.C.LONG;one brother,three sisters,four stepchildren and a number of grandchildren.Burial at Antioch. DEATH--Another faithful soldier of the Cross has laid his armour down and put on his robe and crown.On June 21,1921,as the evening shadows were gathering,the Death Angel visited the home of G.W.WILLIAMS and claimed for its victim,his aged FATHER,SAMUEL B.WILLIAMS.He was born July 6,1836.He married Miss Sarah Ophelia RUST July 30,1868.To this union were born seven children;G.W.WILLIAMS,Mrs.Lee CRAIG,Mrs.R.H.BARNETT,J.R.WILLIAMS,of Gibson County,Mrs.W.S.STEPHENSON,of Memphis,R.E.WILLIAMS,of Paris,and C.S.WILLIAMS,of El Paso,Texas,all present except C.S.,who was inable to be here;30 grandchildren;and three great- grandchildren.Burial in Rose Hill Cemetery.(related item--Mr.& Mrs.Thomas GLASS and R.E.WILLIAMS,of Paris,and Mrs.W.S.STEVENSON,of Memphis,attended the funeral of their father and grandfather,Mr.S.B.WILLIAMS,last Wednesday.) MR.LEM BOLING--died at his home in north Humboldt on Tuesday night,and his wife found him dead when she she went to his bed in early morning.He was about 65 years of age,survived by his wife;two daughters,Mrs.Zach CAMPBELL and Miss Marguerite BOWLING;one son,Thomas BOLING.He came to Humboldt from Crockett county some years ago.Funeral services were held at the home,burial in Rose Hill Cemetery.(Additional info-Mrs.Robert THOMPSON and Miss Evelyn BOWLING,of Alamo,attended the funeral of their uncle,Lem BOLING,of Humboldt last Thursday.) ALAMO DEATH--This community was made sad by the announcement of the sudden death of D.WELLS HARRIS,at his home at an early hour Tuesday morning,June 28th.He was one of Crockett's most successful editors and publishers,having followed this trade until April 1st,when he sold the Alamo Weekly Guide to W.D.FRANKLIN,and was made Deputy Organizer for the Maccabee Order.He was 43 years of age.Surviving him is his brother,and sister-in-law,Mr.& Mrs.E.K.HARRIS and four nephews.Burial in alamo Cemetery. SANDERS'BLUFF--A cloud of gloom was cast over the home of Mr.Billy RHODES on last Thursday,June 30th,when the Death Angel claimed his dear companion,whom he had chosen to journey through life with him.She was quite young,only 18 years,6 months,and20 days old,and had been married less than 2 years.She leaves her husband;1 year old baby;her parents;several brothers and sisters to mourn her. BELLS;MR.L.B.RUST is dead.He died Saturday morning at his home near Cypress Church,at the age of 62 years.He is survived by his wife;one brother,Billie RUST,of near Gibson,Tenn.Burial in Cypress Church Cemetery. THE DEATH ANGEL-- visited the home of Mr.& Mrs.N.E.CARTER last Thursday and took their darling baby,a grandchild of Mr.Roy CARTER. ********************************** THURSDAY JULY 14,1921 FOUND DEAD BY RAILROAD TRACK--At an early hour Monday morning,the body of ZEB BARRETT was found lying beside the L.& N.Railroad track at the north end of 17th Ave.The man had been dead for some time.His death may have been purely accidental,and then it may have been caused by foul play.He had left his home at the cotton mill about 11 0'clock Sunday night,and this was the last time he was seen alive.he is survived by his wife;and small children.He had lived in Humboldt for a number of years. INSANE MAN KILLS NEGRO--George MATHIS,white,supposedly insane,shot and killed Ed.JARRETT,colored,on the farm of Mr.J.M.SENTER,near Mason's Grove,on Thursday of last week. JARRETT was plowing in a field,when MATHIS got off a wagon near the line between the SENTER and MATHIS farms,and shot the farmer dead. MILAN,TENN.,JULY 5TH;MR.JESSE ROLLINS--77 years of age,a farmer,living east of here was gored to death by an angry bull july 15th.He had gone to the barn to feed the stock for the evening when he was attacked by a bull and so badly hurt that he died later.He was the father of Mr.Buck ROLLINS,of near Milan. SANDERS'BLUFF--A dark shadow was cast over the homes of the loved ones of MR.RICHARD A.STEGALL,when the sad news of his death was sent.He was many miles from loved ones at his death,only one brother was with him.The remains were sent back to Antioch for burial. MR.V.A.KINNINGTON--received a telegram Wednesday notifying him of the return of the body of SGT.LLOYD W.KINNINGTON,his son,who was killed in France during the war.Sgt.KINNINGTON was one of the Gibson County boys whose name will long live for his bravery and heroism.His parents are proud possessors of a medal,presented by his government for his valor and heroic service during the hardest fighting of the war. NORMAN McKEE IS KILLED IN MEMPHIS--Norman McKEE,formerly of Humboldt,and son of the late Capt.Henry McKEE,was fatally shot by a negro robber in Memphis Saturday night about 11 o'clock.He was hurried to a hospital and every effort made to save his life,but he died Monday afternoon at 3:30.From reports published by Memphis papers,McKEE was just getting to close his store for the night,when two negroes entered and ordered him to hold up his hands.Not getting them up as quickly as the negroes thought he should have,they fired with deadly effect.A negro named ROGERS was arrested near the scene a little later,but it is not known whether he is the right man or not.Norman McKEE was reared in Humboldt,and has relatives living here.He was a nephew of R.T.BIRDSON and cousin of Mrs.S.C.HILL.Funeral and burial was in Memphis. COXVILLE--We failed last week to ignorance of the fact,to mention the DEATH OF MRS.MAET BROWN,who died from an operation in the hospital in Memphis and was buried at Salem Church on Monday following. MRS.ROBERT COUSIN--died at the home of her daughter,Mrs.MUSGROVES,in Bells Thursday morning,after an illness of several weeks.She was a member of the Christian Church and in her 84th year at the time of her death. FRUITLAND--Mrs.G.W.DEDMON & Mr.J.E.GRADY received a message informing them of the death of their nephew,WILLIE BASS,in El Paso,Texas.Mr.BASS had gone there two years ago,hoping to improve his health.His body was laid to rest in the El Paso Cemetery October 6th.He was the son of T.L.& S.A.BASS,well known in this section. GIBSON--The remains of MR.BILLIE FOUST were buried at Double Bridges Wednesday.He died at his home in Jackson Monday.Mr.FOUST once lived here,having married Miss Geraldine PALMER,who survives him. MEDINA--The remains of MRS.JOE JONES arrived Monday afternoon from St.Louis and a funeral service was conducted by Rev.O.A.MARRS Tuesday morning.She was a sister of James LOVEL,of this place,and her home was near Tiptonville.She was carried to St.Louis for an operation which proved fatal.She is survived by her husband and three children. NEGRO ARRESTED ON MURDER CHARGE--Bob LOVE,colored,who killed LEWIS HALL,another negro here in 1912,was arrested in Dyersburg.(not exactly an up to date obit.) TRENTON; DR.E.D.VAN SYCKEL--died at his home Sunday after a short illness.Funeral services were held Tuesday from the residence.The remains were taken to Canton,ILL.,for interment.For many years,he was a prominent dentist at this place.His wife died July 17,1921. GADSDEN--"OLD KATE,"the red mule belonging to J.D.PORTER,died last week.He had owned this mule nearly a quarter of a century,had driven her in his courting,and of course was attached to her,and is grieved to give her up.Sympathy is extended.(no disrespect,but as a true animal lover myself;I felt the need to include this obit.SMH.) MRS.GEORGE STEVENSON--died Tuesday morning at her home three miles north of Bells,after several months illness.She is survived by several children.Interment took place at Cypress Church Wednesday. ********************************************* FRIDAY NOVEMBER 11,1921 MR.DAVE G.STEWART--one of Humboldt's old and respected citizens,died at his home in East Humboldt on Friday,November 4th,after an illness of many months.His death occurred at 4 o'clock in the afternoon and his family were about his bedside when the end came.Deceased is survived by his wife and two sons and one daughter,Mrs.W.R.ROGERS.The funeral was conducted by E.B.RAMSEY at the family residence,after which the remains were buried in Rose Hill Cemetery.He was 69 years of age. ********************************************* FRIDAY NOVEMBER 18,1931 MRS.MARY PARISH--died at the home of her grandson,Mr.Eddie M.BOWERS,on 18th Avenue,Thursday morning at 5:45 after a short illness.Mrs.PARISH was 76 years of age and is survived by one son,Oscar PARISH,of Kansas City,Mo.,and several grandchildren.The three grandchildren she reared are as follows:Mrs.Clara PARISH PLUMLEE,of Jackson,Tenn.,Mrs.Mary Lou WIGGAN,of Centerpoint,Ark.,and Mr.Eddie M.BOYERS,of this city.Mrs.PARISH was the wife of the Late Tom PARISH. DIES IN NASHVILLE; PROF.J.B.CUMMINGS--formerly of this city,but for several years,a resident of Trenton,died at a hospital in Nashville on Thursday of last week and the remains were brought to Humboldt and interred Friday morning.He taught school in Humboldt some years ago and was married here to Miss McAFEE.Later he made his home in Trenton and was elected to the office of County Superintendent of Education,which office he filled a number of years.For the past few years,he was Truant Officer for the County.Recently he became ill and was taken to Nashville for treatment.He leaves his wife and several children. GIBSON--One of the saddest deaths that has occurred in our community was that of MRS.REBECCA MEALS,who died from injuries received falling from a buggy,an account of which appeared in this paper.She lingered for nearly two weeks and on Monday of this week,she succumbed.The funeral service was held at the Methodist Church Tuesday,after which the body was laid to rest in White Rose Cemetery beside her late husband.She leaves two daughters,Mrs.D.H.RUNGAN and Mrs.L.D.BUTLER;three sons,Thomas,Herbert and Wildord MEALS;two brothers,Dee JONES,of Milan and Sam JONES,of Texas;and one sister,Mrs.JACOBS,of Dyer. HOMER BRYANT--a progressive young farmer,of District No.5,died Friday evening at his home in Bells,after several days illness.He leaves a wife;two children;his father; and one brother.The funeral services were conducted at the residence by Rev.NEWBILL,interment in Bellview Cem. MR.GEORGE A.ROACH--age 48 years,died at his home in Avondale Wednesday morning,after a short illness of pneumonia.The remains were laid to rest in Rose Hill Cemetery.He is survived by his wife and several children. MR.& MRS.DOUGLAS SILER--Leland SILER and Mrs.C.T.McCRORY were called to Jackson Wednesday to attend the burial of their father,MR.GEORGE D.SILER,who died in Paducah on Monday. GIBSON; ROY GATHING,21,died last Saturday at the home of his father,G.F.GATHING.The funeral services were held at Double Springs Sunday. GIBSON--W.H.BLAIR attended the funeral of his nephew,Dick SYKES,near Jackson last week. *************************************************** FRIDAY NOVEMBER 25,1921 GIBSON--Death has again invaded our midst and taken from us another beloved woman,MRS.MILDRED MEREDITH.She had suffered intensely for the past several months.She was a member of the Christian church,and is survived by the following children:Oscar and Will MEREDITH, Miss Frances MEREDITH,Mrs.H.C.FOUST,Mrs.Walter LASSITER and Mrs.Wylie JONES,all of whom were with her when the end came.The funeral service was held at Double Springs Wednesday afternoon by Rev.J.E.HICKS. MRS.BONNIE COKER--wife of Mr.J.L.COKER,died at the family home on Fort Hill Friday,November 18th,after an illness of several months.She is survived by her husband and four children.After a funeral service was conducted by Rev.RAMSEY at the Methodist Church,the remains were buried in Rose Hill Cemetery. GADSDEN--On last Wednesday,PLED,JR.,son of Mr.& Mrs.P.G.PATTERSON,of Bells,was thrown from a wagon and almost instantly killed.The remains were brought to Salem for interment Thursday. GADSDEN--ALVIN,son of Emmett CLIFFORD,died last Wednesday,after two weeks illness of influenza and complications.He was 12-years-old. THE REMAINS OF MRS.CALLIE FISHER--who died November 24th,Thanksgiving Day,were brought here for burial,arriving Sunday.Mrs.FISHER was afflicted with paraylsis for three years.She leaves two sons and one daughter,John M.FISHER,a U.S.officer residing at Panama;George H.FISHER of Memphis;and a daughter,Mrs.J.D.NELSON,with whom Mrs.FISHER was living at the time of her death.There are three grandchildren;J.D.NELSON,Jr.,Beatrice NELSON and J.M.FISHER,Jr.;and two sisters,Mrs.A.Y.SIMMONS and Mrs.Hale JACKSON,both of this city.Mrs.FISHER was formerly of Humboldt,and lived here for many years.She was married to John M.FISHER April 14th,1875. MRS.ANNIE LEE COOPER CLARK--wife of our genial lineman,Mr.John F.CLARK,died early Sunday morning and was buried Monday afternoon,following services at the Presbyterian Church,conducted by Rev.E.L.ORR.Mrs.CLARK had suffered throughout the year,but her sufferings were borne with remarkable patience.She was a member of the Presbyterian Church.Miss SANBORN,the Red Cross nurse,and many friends and neighbors contributed to the alleviations of her weary sufferings,and for all of these she was very grateful.She is survived by her husband,who is in the employ of the local telephone service,and two young sons to mourn her departure. Mr.Walter PERMENTER,of Paducah,Ky.,attended the funeral of his little neice,Ivy Jewell LEWIS. DIES IN PRISON--Bob LOVE,colored,who was arrested some weeks ago and lodged in jail in Trenton,to await trial for the killing of Lewis HALL,also colored,several years ago,died Thursday morning. GIBSON;MRS.ELLA MORGAN--22,wife of Joel MORGAN,died last Saturday after a short illness.She was a member of the Baptist Church,and is survived by her husband and two small children;her parents,Mr.& Mrs.MORRIS;one brother and five sisters.The funeral service was held at the Baptist church Sunday afternoon,Revs.RILEY & COLE having charge.The body was laid to rest in White Rose Cemetery. ******************************** FRIDAY DECEMBER 16,1921 GIBSON--The little two-year-old son of Mr.& Mrs.Ollie BROWNING died Sunday afternoon after an illness of pneumonia.The body was laid to rest in Zion Cemetery. TRENTON--The remains of TURNEY DICKSON,who was shot a few days ago at Clarksdale,Miss.,were brought to this city Tuesday afternoon for interment.Mr.SICKSON,soon after being shot by a Mr.HERRIN,was taken to a hospital in Memphis for an operation and died Monday night.Mr.DICKSON was the son of Mrs.McGILL,of this city.His father was the late Sheriff Dave DICKSON,who was killed at this place several years ago. GADSDEN--W.B.BOOKER has the sympathy of the entire community in the death of his father,which occurred in Brownsville last week. GADSDEN--Mrs.Annie R.CASEY received a message Saturday stating that her neice,Mrs.Pearl BRUMMETT HALL,had died in a hospital in Brinkley,Ark.,Saturday,December ?th.Mrs.HALL's mother died only three months ago.
