Carroll and Lucy M. Wilkes, 1854. KNOW ALL MEN BY THESE PRESENTS, THAT WE George W. Carrol & M. L. Halford, of the County of Gibson and State of Tennessee are held and firmly bound unto the State of Tennessee, in the sum of twelve hundred and fifty dollars, which payment well and truly to be made, we bind ourselves, our heirs, our executors, and each and every one of us and them jointly and severally by these presents. Witness our hands and seals, this 13 day of Dec, 1857. The condition of the above obligation is such, that whereas the above named G.W. Carrol hath this day prayed and obtained License to marry Lucy M. Carrol [NOTE: this is a clerical error. It should be Lucy M. Wilkes]. Now, if the said L.M. Wilkes be an actual resident of said county, and there should not appear any lawful cause why the said G. W. Carroll and Lucy W should not be joined together in holy matrimony, as husband and wife; then this obligation to be void, otherwise to remain in full force and virtue. George W. Carrol (Seal) M. L. Halford (Seal). NOTE: It is clear when examining the Marriage Application that the clerk simply make a clerical error and wrote down Lucy M. Carrol when he intended to write Lucy M. Wilkes. The next two entries on the form correctly use the name Wilkes. All published books and indexes have perpetuated this error.
