Giles Co., TN - Giles County Selected Deeds - Part Three ******************************************************** Copyright. All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm Contributed by: Debra Anderson ******************************************************** Selected Giles CO TN Records of Interest The focus of this file is aimed at particular individuals or family groups that lived in early Giles CO TN (area) between 1808-1850 PER the Giles CO records filed in the Deed Books, and is specifically focused on the various Davenport, McCormack, Neal, Wells and Westmoreland families. The purpose of this file is 1) It will attempt to clarify some of the misconceptions concerning various families or persons 2) It should (hopefully) present some of the problem areas needing further research 3) It will begin the difficult task of ‘connecting’ the various family lineages 4) It should help to present a time line for the various family groups. Some of the hypotheses, theories and conclusions presented are made by inference, and guesswork, and will be subject to change as additional information is added. The data (records) presented are a basis for further study, but readers should not use any of the hypothesis and theories as fact. This file is always a work in progress. I have added “Side NOTE” comments to help in the understanding of the relationships between some of these families. I have also added variant spellings for use with the ‘search tool’. Use your ‘find command’ to zero in on surnames, creeks, so forth and so on. Try using variant spellings with the search tool; try limiting the number of letters in each word. For instance, use ‘buch’ as your search criteria when searching for Buchanan’s Creek. Not all of the Giles CO TN records have been added to this particular file. There are many more Estate/Probate and Chancery Court records that help to explain the various relationships between these families. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- NOTE: 22 Feb 1840, Giles CO TN Deed Bk-O, p369, Reg 1 April 1840, Matthew DEVENPORT [DAVENPORT] of Giles to John KENNEDY of Giles, $1532, [# of acres not mentioned?!] land in Giles on Richland and it tributaries WEAKLY and Dry Creek(s) beg William McKISSACKs North East corner of his portion of the REESE PORTER Grant 2000ac and in Robert ANDERSONs West boundary line the same being Robert WEAKLEYs South East corner of his portion of the afsd Reese Porter Grant running thence West with sd Weakleys and McKissacks line crossing Richland Creek in all 141 poles to the middle to the dry fork of Weaklys Creek the same being the corner of a tract of land already deeded by Jno ___ [runs into inside corner can not read] & Levi McDONOLD [McDONALD] to sd Kennedy thence up sd dry fork of Weakly with its various meanders to the North boundary of the tract deeded by Reese Porter to Robert Weakly ... a small Island in Richand Creek in the original East boundary line of the 2000ac Reese Porter tract thence South... crossing Richland Creek twice... Wells marr to Lucinda'Lou' S. Burk. <= they were my gg.grandparents. It should be noted that Gus D Wells is confused with his 1st cousin Clarence Henry Wells in the 1870 Giles CO TN Federal Census. Gus D., born May 1862, was the son and only child of William H Wells b. 1823 and his 2nd wife Martha McCormack. The enumerator has confused the age of Gus D. with his 1st cousin Clarence Henry Wells b. Feb 1870; Clarence H. was the son of William H Rees Wells b. 1846 and his wife Martha ‘Mattie’ Smith. Wm H Rees Wells b.1846 was the son of Wm H Wells b.1823 and his 1st wife Amanda ‘Marcella’ Harwell. The fact that (most) all of these people, two family groups, are living in this household in 1870, that the Wm H Wells b.1823 and his son Wm H R Wells b.1846 both married to a Martha, only adds to the confusion, and this may help to explain why so many do not understand this group. It is assumed that Martha (nee McCormack) Wells, the 2nd wife of Wm H Wells b. 1823, died sometime between 1862-1870. The Martha Wells living in this 1870 Giles TN Wells household is actually Martha Smith the wife of Wm H R Wells b.1846; she was the daughter of Joshua Smith. William H Wells b.1823 should not be confused with William H. Wells who died 1825 in Giles CO TN who is believed by me to be Uncle of the Wm H Wells b.1823. William H Wells b.1823 should not be confused with William Henry Wells b.1827 who was the son of Peyton Wells of Lincoln CO TN. This William Henry Wells b.1827 married to Ursula Isabella Nave the daughter of Jehu (John) Nave and Elizabeth Neal. These Neals were kin to both of the elder Wm H Wells’ (the one b.1823 an the one b.1827) families. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ You are welcome to use any of these compiled records in your own family research but I would appreciate my name and contact information referenced as the compiler.
