All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm This file was contributed for use in the USGenWeb Archives by: Teresa Shands - ********************************************************************************* State of Tennessee Giles County On this the 23rd day of July 1834 personally appears in open court before the judge of the Circuit Court of the County aforesaid, now sitting William Collier a resident of the County and State aforesaid aged seventy one years since the 11th day of October 1833, who being first duly sworn according to him doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the Act of Claimship Papers June 7th 1832. That he entered the service of the Army and State under the following named officers and served as herein stated. That he entered the said service as a drafted private Militia man in the County of Northampton in the State of North Carolina under the command of Captain James Williamson in Major _ind's Batalion in General Green's division. He cannot now recollect positively who commanded the regiment. The troops to which he was allotted rendesvoused at Wake Courthouse in said state, and from that place were marched by the way of Hillsborough to Sailsbury in said state. From thence they were marched to Six Mile Creek where they fell in with the whole of General Green's army, where they were stationed during the remainder of the term for which he had been drafted, and here at that place discharged after having been in actual service on this expedition three months. He was afterwards again drafted in the said County of State and entered the said service as a Private Militia man, under the command of Captain Henry Casper in Major Peebles Batalion, not being joined in this service to any regiment. He was marched out of the said County of Northampton to Halifax town in the County of Halifax in said State, where application (a line drawn thru these words) where applicant and the Batalion to which he belonged were retained to guard some British prisoners during the whole of his term of service which lasted only three months, from which applicant was discharged by Maj. Peebles at the end of three months from the time when he entered said service. Said services were performed late in the war and complete all the services rendered by applicant during the War of the Revolution. Applicant received the 1st discharge above spoken of from James Williamson, his Capt., but he has since lost or mislaid both of said discharges. He has no documentary evidence and knows of no person whose testimony he can procure who can testify to his service of his own knowledge. He hereby relinquishes every claim whatever to a pension or annuity except the present and declares that his name is not on the pension roll of the Agency of any State. Lester, Clerk of Giles Circuit Court The Questions propounded to the said Applicant by the Court and his answers thereto: 1st Where and in what year were you born ? Ans. I was born in Greenville County in the state of Virginia in the year 1762. 2nd Have you any record of your age and if so where is it ? Ans. I have a register of my age in my possession which I have had for many years. 3rd Where were you living when called into service ; Where have you lived since the Revolutionary War, and where do you now live ? Ans. When called into service I lived in Northampton County state of North Carolina, since the war I lived a long time in the said county of Northampton and when I left said county just mentioned I removed to Caswell County in said state where I resided for about fourteen years and from there I removed to the said county of Giles in the state of Tennessee where I now reside and I have lived for nearly three years last past. 4th How were you called into service, were you drafted ; did you volunteer or were you a substitution and if a substitute for whom ? Ans. I was drafted into service as stated in the foregoing declaration and never was a substitute for anyone. 5th State the names of some of the Regular officers who were with the troops where you served such Continental and Militia Regiments as you can recollect and the general circumstances for your service. Ans. I was not attached to any regular troops that recollect of - the commanding officer question I answered as fully as I can in my declaration. 6th Did you ever receive a discharge from service and if so by whom was it given and what has become of it ? Ans. Have answered this question in the above declaration. 7th State the names of the persons to whom you are known in your present neighborhood and who can testify as to your character and veracity and their belief of your service as a soldier of the Revolution. Ans. John Collier, Henry Yancey, Joseph Anthony, James Hanna, Willis Ashforth, and many others. William X Collier Sworn to and duly scribed in open court 4th of August 1834 Sterling H. Lester Clerk of Giles Circuit Court We, John Collier, residing in Limestone County Alabama, and James Hanna, residing in Giles County Tennessee, hereby certify that we are well acquainted with William Collier who has ascribed and sworn to the above declaration, that we believe him to be seventy one years of age, that he is reported and believed in the neighborhood where he resides to have been a soldier of the Revolution, and that we concur in that opinion, and we further certify that there is no clergyman resident in the neighborhood where the said William Collier now resides. Inge Fayetteville Tennessee NOTES: Though William states his place of birth as Greensville Co. VA, that county had not been formed yet when he was born, so he was most likely born in Brunswick Co. He was the son of Thomas Collier and Elizabeth (MOSS ?) who removed to Northampton Co NC before the war. William's wife's name is unknown, but she may have been a MEACHAM. He had the following children: Littleberry G., Henry Meacham, Mary, Jesse, Frederick,Joseph,Thomas(possibly John Thomas),William "Will", and James. William died after 1850 in Giles Co. TN.
