Some family notes have been incerted and are marked by an astric. *Calvin M. BUTLER, is listed in the book TENNESSEANS in the Civil War. Calvin BUTLER was a Private in the Union Army First Cavalry C Company. *Calvin's Military record states that he was 28 years old when he enlisted in the First Regiment Tennessee Cavalry. His enlistment date was April 10, 1862 at Flatlick, Kentucky sworn in by Col Robert JOHNSON for a term of three years. His military record states that he was 5 foot 10 inches tall and had a fair complexion. He had blue eyes and and light colored hair. His record further noted that he was born in Grainger, Tennessee and before enlistment his occupation was a farmer. On November 1, 1863 was given a clothing allowance -- for Amount for clothing in kind or money advanced $48.65. He not only served with the First Cavalry Regiment Tennessee, but also served with 4 Regiment Tennessee. (There is also a $100.00 due but I am not sure if it was due to Calvin or the United States government.) At the age of 31 years, Calvin BUTLER mustered out on April 1, 1865. However, Calvin's Civil War Record indicated that the last time that he was paid was on August 31, 1864. ************* Declaration for an Originial Invalid Pension State of Tennesee, County of Hamblin on this 12 day of April A.D. One thousand eight hundred and eighty 4 (1884) personally before me (blank) of the (blankP a Court of Record within and for the county and state aforesaid Calvin M. BUTLER, aged 55 years, who, being duly sworn according to law, declares that he is the identical Calvin Mattison BUTLER who was enrolled on the 1 April, 1862, in company "b" of the 1st regiment of Tenn. Cav. commanded by Capt. Jacob K. (JONES) and was honorably DISCHARGED at Nashville on the 1st day of April 1865; That his personal description is as follows: age 55 years; height 5 feet 10 incles, complexion fair; hair light, eyes blue. That while a member of the organization aforesaid, in the service and in the line of his duty at Cumberland (Ford) in the State of Kentucky on or about the (blank) day of October, 1863 he from exposure and carrying heavey burdens (or) incident to such life contracted an affection of the back, beteen shoulders, causing severe pains and knots. Which on the march to Cumberland Gap at Cumberland Ford eas the first ever felt it asd I have been suffering from it ever since we were infantry then and was afterwards transferred to Cavalry Tennesee (???). That he was treated in hospitals as follows: Cumberland Gap Field Hospital No. 1 and at Cleveland Field Hospital but never knew by whom I was treated. That he has not been in the military or naval service otherwise than as stated above. That he has not been in the military or naval service of the United States since 1st day of April 1865. That since leaving the service this applicant has resided in the County of Hamblen in the State of Tennesee and that his ccupation has been that of a farmer. That prior to his entry into the service above named he was a man of good, sound, physical health, being enrolled a Private.... That he is now partially disabled from obtaining his subsistance by manual labor by reason of his injuries, above described received in the service of the United States; and therefore makes this declaration for the purpose of being placed on the invalid pension roll of the United States. He hereby appoints with full power of substitution and revocation. Soule & Co., Attorneys, and Solictors of Claims, Lock Box 16, Washington D.C, his true and lawful attorneys, to prosecute his claim. That he has not received or applied for a pension; that his residence is Daniels North of Talbots Station Hamblen County Tennesee "where I was raised" and that his post office address is Talbots Station Tennessee. Sir: I have the honor to request that you will furnish from the records of the War Department a full report as to the service, disability and hospital treatment of Calvin M. BUTLER, who it is claimed, enlisted Apr 1,1862 and served as Private in Co. Co, 1 Regt. Tenn Cav and was discharged at Nashville, Tenn, Apr 1, 1865. While serving in Co. B. Regt. Tenn Cav. he was disabled by affection of the back between the shoulders from carrying burdens. at Cumberland Ford, Ky, Oct 1862 and was treated in hospitals of which the names, location, and dates of treatment are as follows" Field hospital Cumberland Gap (Hosptial No 1) and Field Hospital Cleveland, Tenn. Very respectfully (Signed Wm DUDLEY). *************** War Department Adjutant General's Office, Washington, Reference Number 511464 Aug 27, 1884 --- Respectfully returned to the Commissioner of Pensions Calvin BUTLER, a Private of Company C 1st Regiment, Tenn Cavy -- Volunteers, was enrolled on the 1st day of April 1862, at Cumberland Gap, 3 years and is reported on the Muster Roll of said Co. to August 31/62 (First on File), Present and so reported to Oct 31,1862. Nov and Dec/62 not on file. Jan to June 30/63 (next on file) Present. 4 months Poll from June 30/63 to Oct 31/63 (next on file) present and so reported to April 30, 64. May and June/64 not on file. D. 1890 personally appeared before me, a Justice of the Peace in and for the aforesaid County, duly authorized to administer oaths P. C. HODGES aged 43 years, a resident of Talbotts in the County of Hamblen and State of Tennessee whose Post Office address is Talbotts Jefferson County, Tenn and Robert PIERCE aged 53 years, a resident of Talbotts in the County of Hamblem and State of Tennessee whose Post Office address is Talbotts Station Jefferson County Tenn. well known to me to be respectable and entitled to credit, and who being duly sworn, declare in relation to the aforesaid case as follow: That they have been well and personally acquainted with said BUTLER for 28 years, and 35 years respectfully and that statement of P.C. HODGES: I have known Calvin M. BUTLER, ever since I was twelve years old he was a stout able bodied man and free from diseases for which he claims pension I have know said Buther ever since his return from the war and know that has been complaining of something being the matter with his shoulder and back ever since his return from Army. I know he has been so (????) disable from work (with something the matter with his foot he said was cause by frost bite while in the service) for over a year. I have lived in the same neighborhood with BUTLER all of my life except for the three years during war can not say as to the extent of his disease until the last year or so but he has not been stout since his discharge I know this by working with him at times. U have know said Butler ever since before the war and he has been complaining (whit something like (???) between his shoulders ....> ever since the war and for the last twelve months he ..... he was a stout able bodied man. Calvin Martin BUTLER. Claimant in Claim # 511464 and makes oath in due form of to that he was directed before the medical board for examining at Dandridge he ask your (???) ti transfer him to Morristown to be examine for this reason he lives eight miles from Morristown and it's seventeen miles to Danbridge and a rough road and he has no way of getting there he can neither walk nor ride a horse back his financial condition is such that he can not hire aa back and of special condition is s that it is possible for him ... to Danbridge the .... to Morristown. BUTLER, on this 11th day of January 1890 personally appeared before me a Clerk of a Court of Record in and for said County, duly authorized to administer oaths. C. M. Butler a resident Talbotts, Jefferson County, Tennesee, well known to me to be respectable and entitled to credit, and who being duly sworn, declares in relation to the aforesaid case as follows: That he is unable to comply with the requirements of the Pension Office as to procuring the affidavits of Commissioned Officers or first sergeant for the reason that he does not know of the whereabouts of any such commissioned officer, and that the Sergeant is dead. That he is unable to prove his condition from date of discharge up to the year 1888 by medical testimony for the reason that the physicians who treated him during said period are dead, or gone from the County, except Dr. J. P. HUNTER, who treated me about 10 years ago. whose present mental condition is such that he declines to make my statement. I was also treated until recently by Dr. James BROWN, whose official position as a member of the U.S. Medical Board at Morristown, Tennesee, precludes him from making statement. He respecfully requests that the testimony of comrades be accepted in lieu of the testimony of commissioned officers and 1st Sergeant. (Signed) Calvin M. State of Tennesee, County of Hamblen, on this 7th day of January A.D. one thousand eight hundred and ninety one personally appeard before me, Clerk of the County Court the same being a Court of recrd within and for the County and State aforesaid, Ellen Virginia BUTLER, aged 42 years, a resident of County of Hamblen, State of Tennesee, who being duly sworn according to law, declares that she is the widow of Calvin M. Butler who enlisted under the name of Calvin M. BUTLER at (blank) on the 1st day of April A.D. 1862 in Company C First Regiment Tennesee Cavalry Volunteer and served at least ninety days in the late war of the rebellion, who was HONORABLY DISCHARGED, April 1865, and died at home December 29, 1890. That she was married under the name of Ellen Virginia ROLEN (Roland) to said Calvin M. BUTLER, on the 23 day of December 1868 by Rev. J.H. CARMICHEAL, at near Massey Creek, Jefferson County Tennesee. That she has not remarried since the death of the said Calvin M. BUTLER that she is without means of support than her daily labor that names and date of birth of all the children now living under sixteen years of age of the soldier are as follows: * (William Henry Butler is not listed --- must be older than 16). * (Charles Butler and Susan Butler were desceased) Application states; Ellen A. Butler, born June 7, 1874 Martin L. Butler, born Sept 13, 1875 Burton L. Butler, born March 17, 1878 Mary Lou Butler, born Sept 5, 1880 Hattie B. Butler, born April 13, 1882 Bettie K. Butler, born Dec 28, 1884 That she has never applied for pension.... but her said husband had and number of his claim is 511.464. That she makes this declaration for the purpose of being placed on the pension roll of the United States under the provisions of the Act of June 27, 1890. She hereby appoints (two attorneys -- but difficult to read their signatures) to prosecute her claim. That her post office address is Talbots County of Jefferson, State of Tennesee. Signed by Ellen Virginia BUTLER and had two signatures of the witnesses, P. A. SPOON and A. P. LINE. *************** AFFDAVIT -- According to the affavit that the Claimant has not re-married that she is without other means of Support than her Daily Labor. Act of June 27, 1890. We, Wm. WHITEHEAD and Catherine CARTER of the town of (blank) County of Hamblen and state of Tennessee do solemnly swear that we are neighbors of Ellen V. BUTLER who is the widow of Calvin M. BUTLER, deceased, on whose account she applies for pension under the provisions of the Act of June 27, 1890, and that for the past 20 years we have been will acquainted with the said Ellen V. BUTLER; that from our frequent intercourse and conversations, and from other circumstances, we have every reason to believe, and we do believe, that the said Ellen V. BUTLER has not re-married since the death of the above-mentioned Calvin M. BUTLER. (Hand written statement) We know she owns no real estate and we point of fact a very little personal property. Consisting of a small amount of ordinary house hold ( ?? Ch) and one horse. We know the further fact that the first wife of said Calvin M. BUTLER, namely Adaline or Wealthy Adaline (HAYNES) BUTLER, died March 10, 1866. We were both at her burial. Roll # 1258-Call # OHS- Page 25 Lines 37-42 1870 Micro Copy # M-593----Jefferson Co., TN Roll # 1540----PO-Talbotts Station Page # 8 Lines 5-10 Other facts found include the information for the marriage date of Calvin M. BUTLER & Ellen Virginia ROLAND, in Jefferson Co., TN. on 12-20-1868. Also, a separate listing found for a Calvin BUTLER of Jefferson, Co., TN. who married Adaline HAYNES, on Oct. 03 or 30th of 1857. According to a family members,.... at the time of Calvin's death, his veteran's pension indicated that Calvin's middle name was Mattison. (We believe that it was actually "Martin"). His mother's name was Ruth and we think that he (MAY) have had a brother named James M. BUTLER. Calvin's daughter Ellen A. BUTLER married Joseph TRAVIS of Hamblen Co., TN. They are my great-grandparents. Please contact me if you have any infomation regarding any of the surnames mentioned here. We have not yet been able to find out who Calvins parents were, nor his location of burial. We do not know if he had other siblings nor where this family came from.... Any help, GREATLY appreciated!
