He was born in Chesterfield County, Va., in 1700 [sic]. He enlisted in Chesterfield County, in 1776. at the age of sixteen. He moved to Amelia County, Va., where he again enlisted in 1781. He served in the Seige of Yorktown. A few years alter the Revolution he moved to Halifax County, Va., where he lived until 1793 when he moved to Washington County, Va., and from thence in 1794 to Grainger County, Tenn., where he resided until his death Aug., 4, 1841. His widow, Rebecca Clay, applied for pension in August 1843, while living in Anderson County, Tenn. She states that she was married to William Clay in Halifax County, Va., Dec., 30. 1788, in her father's house and that her name was Rebecca Comer. Her father was Samuel Comer. She states that her son, Hon Clement Comer Clay of Alabama, was born Dec., 17, 1792; Nancy, born Sept., 18, 1794; William, born July 18, 1794; Cynthia, born Dec,, 15, 1789; Maacha, born June 18, 1802, and Samuel Anderson, born March 29, 1805.
