He was born March 1, 1756, in Northhampton County, North Carolina. He moved to the Watauga River in what was afterwards Washington County, Tennessee, and while residing there he volunteered in June, 1776, in Captain Jacob Womack's company. He served from late in 1776 or early 1777 in Captain James Shelby's company; from July, 1780, he served in Captain Bean's company and was in the battle of Musgrove's Mill; from the latter part of 1780 he served in Captain Burnette's company.
