Be was born about 1757 in Augusta County, Virginia. He was the son of David and Catherine Thornton Tate. He enlisted in Botetourt County, Virginia, while living in that County, in 1780 and served until 1782. He served under Captain Ballard Smith and Captain Thomas Boyer and Colonels Buford and Campbell. He was in the battle of Ninety-six and Eutaw Springs. He married Comfort Knox, August 18, 1784, in Botetourt County. Note: David Tate died August 7, 1838, in Grainger County. His wife, born 1767 in Virginia, died in Grainger County, 1841. They are buried at Shiloh Church, near Rutledge, Tennessee. Their children were: Edward, born 1785; Lucy Moody, born 1792; Margaret; David, Jr., John Knox, Samuel Baker, Elisha: William Thornton, Harvey and Milton.
