The date of birth and the names of his parents are not shown in the pension papers of his widow. While he was a resident of Dobbs County, North Carolina, he enlisted in 1776, as a private in Colonel Abraham Shepherd's regiment, and served in all about seven years. He was in the battle of Cowpens, where he was wounded in the right leg. He married, January 1, 1786, Nancy Glasgow, daughter of James Glasgow, Secretary of State of North Carolina. They were married in James Glasgow's home. Willoughby Williams served as a member of the North Carolina Legislature from Dobbs County, in 1790. Hi swidow, Nancy Glasgow Williams, married August 4, 1806, in Kingston, Tennessee, Joseph McMinn, Governor of Tennessee, who died at the home of his stepson, J. G. Williams, in Calhoun at the Cherokee Agency. Nancy Glasgow Williams McMinn was allowed pension on account of the services of her first husband, Willoughby Williams. She applied for pension March 8, 1848, when she was a resident of Davidson County, Tennessee, and was then seventy-seven years old, and therefore born in 1771. She died June 27, 1857. She had no children by her second marriage. By her first marriage she had six children: one son was J. G. Williams. The sixth child, Willoughby Williams, Jr., born 14, 1798, was living in Nashville in 1851. The widow, Nancy McMinn, was living in Wilson County in 1840.
