C A R M E L C E M E T E R Y Located behind Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church at Mt. Carmel Rd. & Marvin Rd., Mt. Carmel Greene County, Tennessee ======================================================================== Revision History 1.0 (July 6-7, 1998): Surveyed by Jeff Scott 1.1 (Fall, 1998): Survey completed by Irma Hardin, Emily Swecker, Edmond Carter and Betty Beach. 1.2 (7/23/1999): Corrections and additions to survey by Jeff Scott. 1.3 (1/3/2000): Corrections and additions to survey by Jeff Scott. 1.4 (1/5/2000): Checked all names against Buford Reynolds' 1967 survey & made note of graves lost since then. (verification of survey not complete & adding of 1967 notes) ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Locating Graves Arranged by location with index by surname at end. (index not done yet) About location numbering: This survey is major arranged by rows and minor by columns. 1. Row A is on the west side, along Mt. Carmel Rd. Row Z is towards the East. 2. Row AA follows Row Z. 3. Column 1 is the northernmost marker in a row (closest to Marvin Rd.). Spatial orientation: The front door of the church, facing Marvin Rd, is on the north side. The graveyard is to the south and east of the church. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Graves and Markers Rows are laid out north to south. Body orientation: The feet of the dead are placed to the east and the head to the west. This is believed to facilitate resurrection at the end of time. Headstones & footstones: The headstone is placed at the head. Occasionally there will be a footstone which has the person's initials or 'mother' or 'father'. Sometimes in family plots, the family surname is at the headstone and the individuals' names and dates are on the footstone. Reversed headstones: Usually the body is on the same side as the headstone engraving, but not always. The reason is that the engraving on the headstones almost always faces east, but occasionally one has been turned around. These stones are indicated as [reversed] in this survey. Sometimes this happens when the monument company mistakenly engraves the names backwards on a double headstone. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ About the format [] - Square brackets surround notes that describe engravings and location information. {} - Curly brackets indicate notes, comments, inside knowledge, and speculations (when there's a question mark). "" - Quotes indicate an inscription. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Comments made at Mt. Carmel Cemetery by my cousins Cousin D: "Getchie one of them corn-fed Tennesee girls." Cousin I: "They's the best kind!" Cousin I: "I's spent a lot of time a-courtin' here. We'sd a-sittin on the tombstones a-holdin' hands. Remember that tombstone with the dove on it?" Cousin E: "Yes, but I think it's a-gone now!" Have you ever spent your entire life living in a red room and then one day you opened the window and you saw blues and greens and yellows and white for the first time and it was spring outside? That is exactly what visiting Greene Co. for the first time is like. ======================================================================== Row A - parallel and closest to Mt.
