GREENE COUNTY, TN - MILITARY - Thomas Bryant, Revolutionary War Pension Application ----¤¤¤---- Thomas Bryant entered the service at Culpeper County, Virginia; applied for a pension in Greene County, Tennessee; but moved to Daviess County, Missiouri and died in Grundy County, Missouri Thomas Bryant's Revolutionary War Pension Application Transcribed by Donna Langston Milstead, 20 March 2000 Certificate #1665-7, Service from Virginia State of Tennessee} October Session 1832 Greene County } On this 24th day of October 1832 personally appeared in open court being the court of pleas and quarter sessions for said county before the Justices of said court THOMAS BRYANT a resident citizen of said county aged seventy three years the 3d day of March last who being first duly sworn according to law doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the Act of Congress passed the 7th of June 1832. That he was born in Northumberland County in the State of Virginia on the third day of March in the year 1759 near the mouth of the Potomac and he entered the service of the United States under the following named officers and served as herein after stated to wit He enlisted at Culpepper Court house in the State of Virginia under Capt. John Pope of Louise County in the month of December (as well as he remembers the month) 1776 for the term of three years in the 11th Regiment Continental troops and about a month after he enlisted he marched to Williamsburg and there he joined Capt. Pope's Company under Lieutenant Pettit and shortly afterwards was attached to the company of Captain John Camp, Colonel Magrywether commanded the Regiment (tho his name may have been Merywether) Major Morgan commanded in that Regiment part of the time. He remained with the troops from January 1777 at Williamsburg until July in the year 1778 and then under the command of Capt. Camp he was marched with the company by Middle Brook to Long Island in the State of New York and from Long Island part of the company to which he belonged including this applicant returned to the State of Virginia where in the month of February following he was placed on the duty of guarding the prisoners in Albemarle County until his three years expired, the tern for which he enlisted, and he served his full term for three years and was discharged by Col. Cole, or Coles, Capt. Fisher Rice and Col. Harvey commanded whilst he was stationed in Albemarle County, Virginia. He was not in any battles during his service. He left his discharge at Redstone on the ___________ River in the year 1782 and he has not seen it since and expects it has been lost long since. He further states that within a month after he returned from the service as before stated to his residence he was drafted in the Militia for three month tour of duty under Capt. Elijah Kirkley, Lieutenant Morry Walker, Col. James Barbows and was discharged at Johnson Springs 25 miles from Richmond, Virginia but did not serve out the three months. After he was discharged that time he went on to Richmond, Virginia and there substituted in the Regular Service in the place of Joseph Snider for eight months and was in a short time after sent to Liberty where he was kept until the end of his time running bullets and musket balls for the use of the Army and in all served nearly or quite four years. He has not any documentary evidence to prove his service nor has he any witnesses to prove his service except the affidavits of John Day, James Lay and John Pagne, Jr. hereto _____________. He hereby relinquished every claim to a pension except the present and declares that his name is not on the pension rolls of any state or its agency. There is not any resident minister in his vicinity who can testify for him. Sworn to and subscribed in open court this 24th day of October 1832. And the said court as further certify that it appeared to them that John Day, James Lay and John Pagne, Jr. who have subscribed and sworn to the above certificate are citizens of Greene County and are credible persons and that their statement is entitled to credit. ******************************** November the 27th day 1842 Missouri Daviess County Mr. Thomas D. Arnold Dear Sir after my best respects to you I will inform you that through kind providence I have landed in Missouri Daviess County eight miles south of Gallatin and have had better health through the __________ than I could of expected. Hoping these may find you in good health and prosperous condition. The time here is very hard with respect to money matters. Every thing else is very plenty and the health good. I have not seen enough of the country to say much. Though what I have seen, I am well pleased with. Believing it to be the greatest farming country I most ever saw and wonderful for stock. That is as much as I can say reflecting the country. With regard to the business that I spoke to you in Tennessee to arrange for me. I want you to have it arranged as soon as possible so that I may make my draw in this state by the fourth of Marcy next year.
