He was born in Frederick County, Virginia, September 20, 1762, and moved while he was young to Washington County, North Carolina, which later became Washington County, Tennessee. He resided there in the fall of 1780 when he enlisted in Captain Williams' company and marched to meet Major Patrick Ferguson. He was in the battle of King's Mountain. In the fall of 1781 he enlisted again under Captain John Smith and Lieutenant John Butler and was in the battle of Boyd's Creek. In the summer of 1782 the enlisted again under Colonel John Sevier and Captain Williams and served against the Cherokees. He died in Green County, Tennessee, February 16, 1842. He married Sarah Oliphant in Greene County, May 15, 1808. she survived him and applied for pension February 3, 1853.
