He was born in 1759. He enlisted in Bedford County, Virginia, Militia in 1776. He served in Colonel Christian's regiment in the Cherokee Expedition. He substituted for William Cannon in Captain Robert Sevier's company. He was appointed ensign in 1779 and served in Georgia. In 1782 he served against Indians under Captain Wood of Greene County, Tennessee. He was discharged in Greene County. Noe: He died in Greene County November 2, 1833. He had a half brother, David Murphey, born 1769. William Murphey married Rachel _____, born November 15, 1764, died January 26, 1782. Their son, John Murphey, was born 1782.
