PENSION APPLICATION FILES WAR OF 1812 DEATH OR DISABILITY THE NATIONAL ARCHIVES FILE NO: 15578 VETERAN: LEONARD KELLER SERVICE: PVT. TENN. MIL. Green County Tennessee May 15th 1852 It is hereby certified that Leonard KELLER who has sworn to and subscribed the foregoing declaration was mustered into the service of the United States at Knoxville Ten on the 13th day of November 1814 in the company of the undersigned in 4th Regt Ten Ma commanded by Col BAYLES war 1812. Was a stout, healthy, and able bodied man when he was mustered into service and in this condition he took up the line of march to head quarters at Mobile in the now state of Ala, the said Keller was a good soldier always (when able) ready to obey the commands of his officers. Certifies further that the hardships, exposures, and almost starvation was the common lot of the whole company, and the whole of the 4th Regt. The undersigned further states the said Leonard Keller while in the line of his duty as a soldier on or about the 12th day of December 1814 at or near a place called Highwassee garrison in the state of Tennessee, was then and there attacked with a fever of a very malignant character, which very frequently proved fatal to the soldiers, and that the undersigned was not acquainted with the state of health of said Leonard Keller at the time the company was disbanded, as he was sick himself and not able to attend to the duties of his office; would certify further, that the hardships, starvation, and consequent afflictions of said campaign was sufficient to destroy almost any Human constitution , and does not know of any of his soldiers who have escaped a ruined constitution from said campaign, have not been personally acquainted with said Keller since the service aforesaid but refers to the evidence of his comrades and neighbors for such evidence; Sworn to & subscribed the day & year aforesaid Joseph HALE Late Capt 4th Regt Tenn Ma Allen BAKER Justice of the Peace (In another document Joseph Hale certifies that Leonard Keller was honorably discharged). State of Tennessee Green (sp) County On the 20th day of March 1852 Personally appeared before me MG SPRINKLE as an acting Justice of the Peace in and for the county and state aforesaid Solomon FANN a witness with whom I am well acquainted and whose evidence is entitled to the full faith and credit, who first being duly sworn according to law doth on his oath depose and say as follows To wit: That he was a private soldier in the company commanded by Capt Joseph HALE 4th Regt Tennessee Militia commanded by Col BAYLES war of 1812. (The deposition continues with Solomon Fann stating that he lives within 2 or 3 miles of Leonard KELLER and verifying the health problems stated above). State of Tennessee Green (sp) County Be it known that on this 22nd day of March 1852 Personally appeared before me M. LAMB an acting Justice of the Peace in and for the county and state aforesaid William ROLLINS aged sixty five years a resident of Green (sp) County (deposition continues with William Rollins stating that he is a neighbor of Leonard Keller and that Leonard has had health problems since he returned from the service in 1815). State of Tennessee Green (sp) County Be it remembered that on this 20th day of March 1852 Personally appeared before me MG SPRINKLE …Leonard KELLER aged seventy one years a resident of Green County and State of Tennessee… To wit: That he was mustered into the service of the United States at the town of Knoxville Tennessee on the 13th day of November 1814 in a company commanded by Capt Joseph HALE 4th Regt Tennessee drafted militia, commanded by Col Samuel BAYLES in the war of 1812. From Knoxville said company took up the line of march to a place called Lookout Mountain in the state of Tennessee. Declarant further states that from being exposed to almost incessant torents (sp) of rain in that inclement season of (?), and having to wade creeks, rivers and swamps often have to lay in water or stand up all night and not having so much as a blanket to screen him from the wet and cold, not being able to obtain one himself and the government did not furnish him one, and consequently, while on the (line?) of march, and in the line of duty at or near a place called Highwassee garrison in the state of Tennessee on or about the 12th day of December 1814, he was attacked with a malignant fever which prevailed among the soldiers… and laying at the place aforesaid for six or eight weeks, when the said fever declined left him with severe pain in his left side, attended with caugh (sp), with inflammation and great enlargement of the left testicle, all of which continues to the present day… He also declares that he has never received the first dollar or cent for his services aforesaid except his Land warrant under the act of Sept 28th 1850… Declarant states that he has been a resident of Green County for forty seven years last past and a farmer by profession. Leonard Keller State of Tennessee Green County On this 4th day of January 1853 Personally appeared before me George HUGHES an acting Justice of the Peace… Frederick RICKER… That he (Frederick) was a private in the Company of Capt HALE 4th Regt Tennessee malitia (sp) (deposition goes on to state that Leonard KELLER was afflicted with camp fever and discharged on or about 18 May 1815).
