Death was from a lingering illness of six weeks duration. He had been a resident of Jackson County 61 years, coming to LaMotte from Indiana in 1853. During the Civil War Mr. Rhea joined Company I, 24th Iowa Volunteer Infantry, from Jackson County and after serving his country faithfully throughout the time of his enlistment, was given an honorable discharge and returned to this county, where he took up his trade of wagon maker in Andrew. He was born in Green County Tennessee, Feb. 18, 1832. At the age of 13 years he came north with a family, friends of his parents, and since that time has never returned to the home of his birth. It was a strange coincidence that David Rhea, a Southerner by right of birth, should turn to the north in time of war and gave up all his ties which bound him to a highly respected and honored southern family. In 1854, Mr. Rhea was married to Miss Sarah Blake of LaMotte, who died two years ago. Eight children were born to this union, five of whom survive. Mr. Rhea retired and moved to Maquoketa from Andrew in 1904. He enjoyed a wide acquaintance throughout the eastern part of Iowa. Funeral services were held at the home on South Olive street Thursday afternoon, Rev. Ruring officiating and interment was at Mt. Hope Cemetery.
