He was born in Culpepper County, Va., in 1762. He enlisted in Albemarle County, Va., and served three months as a private in Capt. Bradley's company. His father, Joseph Campbell, Sr., moved about this time from Albemarle County, to Washington County, Va., where Joseph Campbell, Jr., enlisted in the summer of 1789, serving three months as a private in Capt. Robert Edmondson's company. Col. William Campbell's regiment and was in an engagement with Indians on the Holston River. He next substituded for his father, serving three months in Capt. Edmondson's company and was in the battle of King's Mountain. Shortly after this date he was appointed Ensign in Capt. Black's Virginia company, receiving his commission from Gov. Patrick Henry. and for three months was engaged in cutting out the Kentucky Road. He died Jan. 9, 1841, in Bradley County, Tennessee. Note: He went to Bradley County to visit a daughter who lived near Calhoun and died in her home. His widow, Christiana Campbell, received the arrears of his pension. She was probably an Anderson before her marriage as a close connection with the East Tennessee Anderson family is indicated. The children of Ensign and Christiana Anderson Campbell, were: William, who married Rebecca Shahan, George, John and James.
