He was born in Hanover County, Virginia, November 21, 1751. He enlisted in Halifax County, Virginia, in Captain Rogers' company; he moved after the Revolution to Grayson County, Virginia, then to Wythe County, Virginia, and then to Tennessee where he lived in Grainger County before he moved to Hamilton County in February, 1833. He died before 1840, as his pension was then being paid to his children. He had a brother Laban Goens.
