He was born Dec. 10, 1762, in Caswell County, N. C. He enlisted Jan. 1, 1777 under Capt. Waddy Tate, Lieut. Davis, Pieut. Patton and Col. Shepherd. He volunteered again May 1, 1780 but hired a substitute, Thomas Thaxton. He volunteered again and was made sergeant of a company commanded by Capt. John Graves and Lieut. Hammond. He volunteered again under Maj. Elijah Moore and again under Capt. John Oldham. After the Revolution he resided in Pendleton District, S. C., until 1800 when he moved to Jackson County, Ga.; from there he moved to Hall County, Ga.; from there to Cherokee County, Ga.; and from there to Hamilton County, Tenn., where he died Jan. 15, 1843. His widow, Violette Reid, applied for widow's pension in Hamilton County in 1844, when she was 76 years old, therefore born in 1768. She states that at one time during her absence from Hamilton County. William Reid was induced to marry but the marriage was not recorded and was proved illegal. She says that she was married to William Reid Jan. 4, 1789 and that she was Violette Brown before her marriage. She died in Hamilton County in 1861 or 1862. Bible pages enclosed in her application give the names of children as follows: Clayton, born 1789; Cynthia, born 1791; Alfred, born 1794; Elizabeth Brown, born 1796; William Porter, Jr., born 1801 and Edey Shotwell, born 1804. Nancy Reid Adams, a sister of William Porter Reid, was living in Habersham County, Ga., in 1836, aged 71 years and was declared to be "an old lady of note and usefulness in her neighborhood."
