Thurmon one negro girl named Ann for and in consideration of six hundred fifty dollars and I do warrant and defend the title of said negro to him the said Thurman against the lawful claim of any person or persons whatsoever as witness my hand and seal this ninth day of December 1837. Thurman – Jurat State of Tennessee, Hardeman County Personally appeared before me Samuel McDowle Deputy Clerk of the county court in and for said county Robert C. Moore & Joshua H. Thurman the subscribing witnesses to the foregoing bill of sale who after being each duly sworn deposed and said they were personally acquainted with said Beard the signee and bargained to the same and that she duly acknowledged the execution of the same to be her ____ of deed, on the day it bears date, for all the purposes therein ______ given under my hand at office in Bolivar this 6th day April 1838. Next deed, same page 504 continued to 505 also recorded on April 6, 1838 Know all men by these presents that I John Dines of the County of Madison in the State of Alabama have for and in consideration of the sum of eight hundred and fifty dollars to me in hand paid by Joshua Thurman of Bolivar in the State of Tennessee, the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged bargained and sold and by these presents do bargain sell and convey unto the said Joshua Thurman a negro man slave by the name of John of yellow or mulatto complexion about twenty six years of age to have and to hold the said man John unto the said Joshua Thurman his heirs executors administrators and assigns forever unto his and their only use and benefit and I do hereby warrant and defend to the said Joshua Thurman, the right and title of said man John by these presents witness my hand and seal, this 19th day of November in the year of our Lord, 1837. John Dines (seal) Witness – The consideration money used above was the funds of my brother said John Thurman, and the intention was and is that he should be free and I do hereby for nyself my heirs executors and administrators relingquish all rights in and to said slave John and do give to him his liberty as a free man now and forever witness my hand and seal April 6th 1838. Thurman whose signature appears to the above relinquishment attached to the foregoing bill of sale from John Dines with said J.H. Thurman and am personally acquainted who duly acknowledged he executed the same on the day it bears date, for all this purpose therein named given under my hand at office this 6th day of April 1838. Next deed, same page 505 also recorded on April 6, 1838 Whereas on the 19th day of November 1837 John Dines of the County of Madison and State of Alabama made his bill of sale to Joshua Thurman of Hardeman County and State of Tennessee for a man slave named John of yello or mulatto complexion the consideration of which was the sum of eight hundred dollars in hand paid. Now know all men by these presents that the said John is free by reason of said purchase as the money used on the occasion was his and the purpose for which the said sale was effected was that he might embrace and enjoy all the privileges which the laws of the county bestow on colored persons made free.
