BOLIVAR Bolivar, TN. was first established on the banks of the Hatchie River and was known as Hatchie Town. It was formed from the Chickasaw Purchase of 1818. Hardeman County was officially organized on October 16, 1823 and was named for Thomas Jones Hardeman, a veteran of the War of 1812. Mr. Hardeman moved to Texas in 1835. On October 18, 1825 Hatchie Town was named Bolivar named for General Simon Bolivar of South America. GRAND JUNCTION Grand Junction, TN., began in 1854 following the formation of the junction of the Memphis and Charleston and the Mississippi Central railroads. In it’s early days it was known as Moore’s Crossroads. The address to Grand Junction City Hall is 150 North Tippah, Grand Junction, TN. 38039 901-764-2871. HICKORY VALLEY Hickory Valley, TN., was first settled in the 1820s by William Shinault. In 1826, another settlement was made by Drury Wood about one mile northwest of today’s town. Another settlement was began at Mount Comfort about two miles west of town in about 1827 by William Barnett. Today all of this is known as Hickory Valley. HORNSBY Hornsby, TN., was first called Bright Prospect, located in Wade’s Creek Valley. Dr. Daniel Smith Webb’s grist and sawmill was located on the Little Hatchie River. Later called Webb’s Mill, the settlement had a dock and commissary near the river owned by two Revolutionary War soldiers, William & Joel Crain. MIDDLETON Middleton, TN., was first called Slab Town. William Taylor (Zack) McCommons and Jesse Jenkins were some of the early settlers to Middleton. It was incorporated in 1854. SAULSBURY Saulsbury, TN., first named Berlin it was located on the Old State Line Road on the way to LeGrange and Memphis, TN. SILERTON Silerton, TN., was first settled by Jesse, Spencer, James and Horace Siler, sons of Solomon Siler, and James, John, Josiah and Edward Siler, sons of James Siler, all from Siler City, N.C., purchased land in the Silerton area in 1869. TOONE Toone, TN., some of it’s first settlers were James and Elizabeth Toone, who came to the area in 1827. Issac Walter Pirtle family settled in this area also. WHITEVILLE Whiteville, TN., first emerged about 1800 by Dr. John White of VA. It was called Whiteville Post. It was first incorporated in 1854. It’s City Hall is located at 158 East Main Street, P.O.
