Ragon splstk@aeneas.net ==================================================================== Contributor's Note: The attached pension application of Catherine Young Ragan contains some discrepancies with William Young's, her father, pension application. Catherine is the wife of Nathan Ragan, Jr., whose father, Nathan Ragan, settled in the Yellow Creek area of Dickson County, TN., ca 1805. Rejected RW Pension Application of Catherine Young Ragan and Samuel Young State of Tennessee County of Hardeman Catherine Ragan on behalf of herself and of her brother Samuel Young of Newberry District South Carolina, makes oath that affiant who is a resident of Hardeman County and nearly Eighty-five years of age (Bible record: born: 22 Sept. 1788) and the said Samuel Young who in nearly Seventy-Eight years of age (Born: 15 Aug. 1792, Tombstone) are the only living Heirs and children of William Young, Decd. who was a Captain of a Company raised in Newberry District South Carolina and its vicinity all through the Revolutionary War. Affiant states that her said father served as Captain all through said war until honorably discharded at its close and she believes the roll of his Company with his name thereon as Captain will be found in the proper archives at Washington City. Afficant cannot recollect the Colonel of her father’s Regiment or the number of the same. Affiant would show that her said father lived in Newberry District South Carolina after said war many years and until he became a very old man - towit - about the year 1822 (although affiant being old & her memory weak she cannot be positive as to dates) when he removed to Christian County Kentucky whence, after remining there three or four years he removed to this Hardeman County, Tennessee, where he lived about five or six years and then removed to Perry County, Tennessee, where he lived five or six years and died about the year 1837, aged one hundred and five years. (Born: 15 Oct. 1744 per his pension file, S4742). Affiant would show that the old family Record has been destroyed by fire many years since and therefore cannot be produced. Affiant is informed that she & her Brother who are the only living children of her said father are entitled to the pension money which was due her father at his death in 1837 under the laws of the United States as he never applied for or received any pension during his lifetime and his children have never applied for or recd. any since his death. And she makes this declaration for the purpose of obtaining said pension money and interest. And she hereby for herself and the said Samuel Young nominates and appoints Wood and Smith of Bolivar, Hardeman County, Tennessee her attorneys to prosecute her said claim for her this 3rd day of August 1860. her Catherine X Ragan mark Test: Jas. McCann On this 3 day of September 1860 personally came Catherine Ragan before me an acting Justice of the Peace in & for Hardeman County Tennessee, & made oath - inform of Law that the facts set forth in the foregoing Declaration are true to the best of her knowledge, recollection and belief And I certify that she is the person she represents herself to be & from every appearance of the age she represents herself to be. Jas. McCann Justice of the Peace for Hardeman County We, Groves Rook and Tabitha Rook, of Hardeman County do swear that we are acquainted with Catherine Ragan & have lived near neighbors to her in Hardeman County for about thirty-six years. That she is the identical person qualified to the above Declaration - That they were well acquainted with her father, William Young, who lived several years at the house of the said Catherine in affiants neighborhood about the year 1828 to 1832 & he was at that time a very old man, being said to be about one hundred years old. Affiants state that the said Catherine was always treated and acknowledged by him as his daughter and generally reputed to be such. Affiants further state that said William Young removed to Perry County about 1832 where it has always been generally reputed he died about 1837. Affiants are not in any way connected with Catherine Ragan nor interested in this Claim. This the 3 day of Sept. 1860. Groves Rook Tabitha Rook I certify that the foregoing affidant of Groves Rook & Tabitha Rook was sworn to & subscribed before me this 3rd day of Sept. 1860.
