This is the last Will and Testament of Sampson Carper. I will my Soul unto God that gave it and my body to the dust from whence it came. And I do will and bequeath unto my dear beloved wife Lavinia Carper the following property to wit one negro woman by the name of Thankful and her child John, the whole of the tract of Land on which I now live and cultivate and all of the present crop of every kind on hand and the growing crop if there be any crops growing at the day of my death two head of Horses her choice out of all my stock 3 Milk Cows 4 head of young cattle all to be of her choice all of the sheep 30 head of choice Hogs one waggon and one Yoke of Oxen 3 choice plows and 21 setts of Gear of 4 Featherbeds Bedsteads and such furniture as She may choose to put with these and all of the furniture in the house and kitchen furniture. It is my wish that Lavinia Carper have the above named and mentioned property and effects thereof for her own use and special benefit and for the support maintanance and education of her children those of them that are under age and after the death of Lavinia Carper all of the foregoing and above mentioned property and increase or effects of the same it is my will and wish that it all shall belong and be equally divided between her five younger children towit: Austin M. Carper, Martha J.Carper, Tennessee A. Carper, James H. Carper, Thomas S. Carper and each of the heirs here named may draw their respective shares as soon as they may become of age. It is also my wish and request that their mother be their Guardian and distributes as long as she may live. And it is my will and request that the balance of my estate except that before named and mentioned property shall be sold on a twelve months credit and divided between the other five older children G.W. Carper, W.S. Carper, S.A. Huffman, S.C. Derryberry and M.E. Carper ,and Mary A. Carper wife of Alex Carper decd. I want the amount of money arising from the sale of my property to be divided amoung thoses names above mention as I will here state. To G.W. Carper One hundred Dollars out of which money or credit is to be given to satisfy four notes and one receipt that I paid to Mr. Nolen for Eighteen Dollars, notes and receipt all amount to Ninety two dollars and 41 cents. To W.E. Carper Three hundred Dollars for a Horse which he has already received. To Sarah A Huffman Three hundred and forty Dollars out of which a credit is to be given for thirty Dollars for a Saddle and One Cow which she has received. To Susan C. Derryberry Three hundred and forty Dollars. To Mary E. Carper Eight Hundred Dollars with a credit of Eighteen Dollars for a Saddle she received. To Mary A. Carper wife of Alex Carper decd. One hundred and fifty Dollars. Now if there should be any money from the proceeds of the sale I want it equally divided amoung the last named six heirs. This Will is written by myself while in perfect mind and health. Signed in the presence of the subscribing Witnesses on the ____ day of Sept A.D. 1858. State of Tennessee Hardeman County County Court April Term 1861 There was the within proper writing purporting to be the last Will of Sampson Carper decd. duly proven to be his handwriting by W. J. Davis, W A. McDonald and J.M. Kirk three credible witnesses, who state on oath that they verily believe the same to be the handwriting of said Carper.
