HAWKINS COUNTY, TN - MILITARY - Bartley Belcher, Revolutionary War Pension Application ----¤¤¤---- REVOLUTIONARY WAR PENSION APPLICATION - BARTLEY BELCHER Bartley Belcher War Service Revolutionary War Pension Application #W2054. Applied for 28 August 1832, resident of Hawkins County, TN Born 08 June 1764. Died 08 April 1848. Bartlett stated that he served in the American Revolution. "The Amercan Genealogical Index "has Bartlett as being born in Virginia, applied for a Revolutionary War Pension in Tennessee: Va rev war records volume 54. He enlisted in the spring of 1780 in Patrick County, Va., under Captain Elias Shelton for three months. However, his father had been drafted into the American army and deserted. His father was returned to the army and required to serve 6 months. Bartlet volunteered to serve as a substitute for his father, under Captain George Waller and Lieutenant Turley Choice. He marched with this army from Henry County, Va to Hillsborough, NC. Here they joined the main American army under General Stevens, Colonel William Fortner (?) and Major Purnel. A battle ensued at Camden, in which Bartlett received two wounds in his right arm. He did not join his company again until it arrived at Guilsford Courthouse. He was ordered to the hospital, but was allowed to go his home which was not to far away. The company was again ordered to march to Hillsborough and Bartlett arrived at Henry Courthouse to march, but being ill he was furloughed to go home by Colonel James Penn of Henry County. His six months expired before he recovered his health. In the winter or next spring Bartlet volunteered to go the army to stop Cornwallis' march through Virginia. Under captain William Claud, Colonel James Lyon, and Lieutenant William Cortan he marched towards Hick's ferry on Dan River. Bartlett was verbally discharged by his colonel on Cascade Creek. .....In the early summer of 1781, Bartlett was drafted under Captain John Smith and Lieutenant Emerson to march to Prince Edward's courthouse, to where the army under General Robert Lawsoin, Colonel Purnel and Major Purnell was. They marched to Carter's Ferry on the James River, but were prevented from crossing by the British Army on the other side.They marched to Williamsburg and then, after the British left, marched back to Mobing Hills. Bartlett remained here until discharged after serving two months. .....Bartlett married Alice ? in Patrick County, Va on 20 July 1799. Alice applied 15 September 1849 while residing in Lee County, Va. Her application states that they married at the home of her brother-in-law Richard Davis. They were married by Rev. John Nun, a Baptist Minister. After residing many years in Virginia, Bartlett and Alice moved to Hawkins County, Tennessee. After 6 or 7 years the returned to Lee County, Va where Bartlett died. .....Bartlett Belcher of Hawkins Co. TN, private in the company of Captain Shelton in the regiment of Colonel Fortner in the Virginia Line for ten months, was placed on the Jonesboro, Tn pension roll at 33.33 per annum under the Act of 1832. Certificate 19043 was issued 02 August 18 ( ). .....Alice Belcher, widow of Bartlett Belcher, private in the Virginia Line, was placed on the Jonesboro, TN pension roll at $33.33 per anum under the Act of 29 July 1848 from 08 April 1848.
