He was born in January, 1758, in Chester County, Pennsylvania. He moved while he was a child to Rowan County, North Carolna, He accompanied his father whose name he did not give in the application papers. He entered the service in Rowan County, North Carolina, in 1776, serving three months in Captain David Caldwell's North Carolina company. He moved in 1779 with his father to that part of North Carolina which later became Hawkins County, Tennessee, and volunteered in 1780, serving three months in Captain Solomon White's company, Colonel Isaac Shelby's regiment.
