He enlisted in Stafford County, Virginia, and served in Captain Howard's company, Colonel Buford's 3rd Virginia regiment. He was in battle when Colonel Tarleton defeated the Americans in South Carolina and was in several skirmishes also. He was discharged in the fall of 1781 and had served at least eighteen months. In 1820 his wife was about fifty-two years of age. Her name before marriage is not given. Members of his family then living at home were: Thomas, aged 19 years; Daniel, aged 16 years; Stephen, aged 12 years; Evalina, aged 9 years; and George, aged five years.
