Fuson North Kansas City, Missouri Dear Madam: Reference is made to your letter relative to Moses Johnson, a soldier of the Revolutionary War. The data contained herein were obtained from the papers on file in the Revolutionary War claim for pension, W.153, based upon the military service of Moses Johnson in that war. While a resident of Surry County, North Carolina, Moses Johnson enlisted in August 1778, and served six months as private in Captain Jarvis' Company, Colonel Williams' North Carolina Regiment. He enlisted in March 1780, and served nine months as private in Captain Humphrey's Company, Colonel Martin's North Carolina Regiment. He enlisted in January 1781, served six months as private in Captain Patrick's North Carolina Company and was in the battle of Guilford. Soon after the Revolutionary War, Moses Johnson moved to Tennessee. He was allowed pension on his application executed September 5, 1833, at which time he was aged ninety-three years, and a resident of Hawkins County, Tennessee. He died April 9, 1834, in Hawkins County, Tennessee. Soldier married in 1779, in Surry County, North Carolina, Nancy, her maiden name not given. They were married at the home of John Branden, no relationship given. Soldier's widow, Nancy Johnson, was allowed pension on her application executed March 11, 1842, while residing in Hawkins County, Tennessee, at which time she stated she was aged eighty-four years. However, in February 1839, she stated she was ninety-two years old. In 1841, Judith Liford or Leford, daughter of Moses and Nancy Johnson, was aged fifty-two years, and referred to her oldest sister, but did not state her name. In 1839, her (Judith's) residence was in Hawkins County, Tennessee, and one Jacob Liford or Leford was then a citizen, also, of that county. His age and relationship to the family not stated. One Elizabeth Belcher stated in 1841, in Hawkins County, Tennessee, that she knew Moses and Nancy Johnson, also, one Sarah Stapelton was then aged seventy-nine years, and a resident of that county, and stated that she was present at the marriage of Moses and Nancy Johnson, their relationship to the family not stated. No further family data. In order to obtain the date of last payment of pension, the name of person paid and possibly the date of widow's death, you should appy to The Comptroller General, General Accounting Office, Records Division, Washington, D.C., and cite the following data: Nancy Johnson, widow of Moses Johnson, Certificate No. 6607, issued March 31, 1842, rate $30.00 per annum, commenced March 4, 1836, Act of July 7, 1838, Knoxville Tennessee Agency.
