HAWKINS COUNTY, TN - MILITARY - Samuel Spears, Revolutionary War Pension Application ----¤¤¤---- REVOLUTIONARY WAR PENSION APPLICATION - SAMUEL SPEARS Samuel Spears of Hawkins County, Tennessee Revolutionary War Service Pension Record S39085 North Carolina Service State of Tennessee Hawkins County Personally appeared in Open Court the 25 day of August 1818 Samuel Spears aged about fifty seven years, a citizen of said County/State and being sworn in due form states that he enlisted in the County of Halifax, North Carolina sometime in the month of May in the year 1778 under Col. Hogan of the 3rd Regiment Infantry that his Captain's name under whom he served was Bradley, the Major's name, Hogg - that the period for which he enlisted was nine months- that regiment under the command of said Co. Hogan was marched to Philadelphia agreeable to an order from General Washington to said Col. Hogans - that from there said regiment was marched to West Point when together with the others of said Regiment deponent was employed building a fort and other necessary things. After about four months it was marched back to Philadelphia for winter quarters. That in the spring under the command of said Captain Bradley deponent boarded a vessel at Philadelphia and sailed to Suffolk in Virginia, from thence they were marched under said Captain Bradley to Halifax County aforesaid then the deponent with others was discharged having served faithfully and honorably twelve months and five days - three months, 5 days over his time, that in the town of Halifax this deponent received an honorable discharge from Capt. Mayben that it was in the month of May 1779. But this deponent states that he has lost said discharge and it is out of his possession and does not know in what manner it was lost. He further states that he is very poor and indigent and is frail unable to support himself and stands need of the benefits of his country for support and that he has never been pensioned by his country. Mitchell - Clerk On the same day above mentioned appeared in open court Christopher Haynes a citizen of said county of Hawkins who being duly sworn according to law states he has known the above named claimant an applicant for pension, Samuel Spears, ever since he was a boy, that he lived in Halifax County aforesaid at the time said Samuel enlisted for nine months in the service of the country which he served faithfully and he believes that he is a man of good and honesty in poor circumstances and stands in need of the assistance of his country for support. Christopher Haynes W.B. Mitchell - Clerk State of Tennessee - Hawkins County on the day of September 1821 personally appeared in open court being a court of record for the County of Hawkins aforesaid Samuel Spears aged about 59 years. Resident in Hawkins County being duly sworn according to Law deponent and saith and maketh the following declarations in order to attain the provision made by the Act of Congress of the 18th of March 1818 and the 1st of May 1820. That he the said Samuel Spears enlisted for the term of nine months sometime in the month of May 1778 as near as the declarant's memory serves him in the State of North Carolina in the Company commanded by G. Bradley in the Regiment commanded by Col. Hogan in the North Carolina line on the Continental Establishment, that he continued to serve in said corps until about the 25th of May 1779 when he was discharged honorably from said service in the town of Halifax, North Carolina but that said discharge is lost and that he has no evidence now in his possession of this said service except the affidavit of William Goings a pensioner of the United States who served with him. And in provision of the act of the 1st May 1820 I do solemnly swear that I was a resident citizen of the United States on the 18th of March 1818 and that I have not since time by gift, sale or in any manner, disposed of my property of any part thereof with intent thereby so to diminish it as to being myself within the provision of an "Act of Congress" entitled an act to provide for certain persons engaged in the services of the United States in the Revolutionary war on the 18th day of March 1818. And that I have not nor had any pension in trust for me any property or securities, contracts or debts due to me, nor have any income other than what is contained in the schedule hereto annexed and by me subscribed viz:2 small horses one a mare about 6 years old - one cow and calf 3 steers and one heifer about twenty head of hogs, 1 pot kettle and oven - 3 chairs, old set knives and forks 13 3/4 acres of third rate land. Total $165.00 that my occupation is that of a farmer but owing to weakness and affirmity am unable to work much. That my wife is about thirty eight years old, a daughter 8 or 9 years old, one other daughter about 7 years, a son about 5 years, one daughter about 3 years old the youngest about 9 or ten months old. Samuel Spears (X-his mark) On the same day personally appeared in open court William Goings who being first duly sworn according to law, deponents and sayeth that his is at this time a pensioner and is the same person who made out his amended declaration with the schedule annexed that he is well acquainted with the above name Samuel Spears applicant for a pension that this deponent served with said Spears in Pennsylvania on the Continental Establishment and that what the said applicant has stated in the foregoing declaration is strictly true furthermore this applicant is entirely disinterested in said applicant getting a pension. William Goings (X-his mark) Samuel Spears Pension Record Jacket reads: Samuel Spears, Hawkins County in the State of Tennessee who was a private in the regiment commanded by Colonel Hogan of the N Carolina line for the term of nine months. Subscribed in the Roll of East Tennessee at the rate of 8 Dollars per month, to commence on the 25 of August 1818. Certificate of Pension issued the 25 of Nov 1820 and sent to D. Alexander, Rogersville, Tennessee. Arrears to 4th of Sept 1820 196.80 Semiannual Allowance ending 4 March 1821 48.00 242.80 The widow of Samuel Spears was pensioned on the roll of the Knoxville, Tennessee agency at rate of $8 per month under law of 18 March 1818 has been paid at the department from Mar 4, 1838 to May 27 1838 the day of his death. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Copyright.
