He was born November 19, 1758, in Northumberland County, Virginia. While residing in that County he volunteered in the fall of 1776 and served at various times under Captains John Crawley and George Eskridge and Colonel Thomas Jones. A great part of the time he was stationed at Cherry Point on the Potomac River to prevent the enemy from landing. He served until some time in 1782. He moved with his family from Northumberland County, Virginia, to Edgecomb County, North Carolina, in 1793. After living there about twelve years he moved to Hawkins County, Tennessee.
