He was born in Orange County, Virginia, and reared there and in Chesterfield County. He moved to Burke County, North Carolina, and was living there in 1776 when he enlisted in Captain Reuben White's company, Colonel Charles McDowell's regiment. In the latter part of 1781 he enlisted in Captain Thomas Kennedy's company, Colonel Locke's regiment. After the Revolution he moved to Pendleton County, South Carolina, where he lived twenty-two years. He then moved to Madison County, Kentucky, thence to Wayne County, Kentucky, where he lived ten years, thence to Fentress County, Tennessee, where died April 6, 1736.[sic] His widow, Nancy Kidwell Wood, applied for pension while living in Wayne County, Kentucky, where she lived with her son, Belfield Wood, Jr., in September, 1856. She married Belfield Wood March 15, 1810, in Pendteton County, South Carolina. The ceremony was performed by Henry Burch. Her maiden name was Kidwell. She was born in 1792, and may have been Belfield Wood's second wife as she was about forty years younger than he. After the death of Belfield Wood she married Thomas Millsaps.
