Powell ********************************************************************************************************** Harmony Baptist Church Harmony Baptist Church was organized 14 October 1837 east of the Haywood- Hardeman County line and about a mile and half west of Cedar Chapel. In 1840, the church moved to the present location on the Brownsville and Whiteville Road on land donated by Tom Short who designated the cemetery was to be a free burying ground. Up until the end of the Civil War Slaves belonged to the church. Afterwards the following resolution was adopted: "Resolved that the colored members of this church be, if they so desire, organized into a separate church, and that we loan them the use of our house one Sunday each month during our will and pleasure." Soon afterwards they secured their own meeting place. * Dates Important to Harmony o February 1901: during services the roof caught fire. T. P. Stuart climbed up and put out the fire. o 1908: Committee to Erect New Building: Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Powell, T. P. Stuart, J. S. Howse, W. H. Bentley, T. D. Coffey, R. L. Newsom, Nettie Lee Powell, Tommie Newsom, Willie Bentley, Nettie Coffey, Mabel Richardson, Mrs. Henry Powell. o 1910: Building dedicated. o 1938: Cemetery Association Organized. 1980, Perpetual Care Trust set up.
