A LIQUOR DEALER,ROCHESTER,placed a bust of FRANKLIN above the counter. When asked why he did so,replied that Franklin had drawn lightening from the clouds and he had a fellowfeeling for him,as he was constantly drawing lightening from barrels. FRANK SCOTT,colored,of Memphis, and William WILLIAMS,colored,at Bartlett, suffered the extreme penalty of the law,Friday. GOVERNOR PORTER OF TENNESSEE,has offered five hundred dollars each, and the lessess of the penitentiary one hundred dollars each, for the recapture of Edward H.JOHNSON,the express robber, and Bill SMITH.The Governor has also offered one hundred dollars reward, for the reapprehension of Jack PROYOR,the murderer. It is not improbable that the express company will add five hundred to the reward for JOHNSON,swelling the amount for him to $1000. REWARD---Five cents Reward-We will give 5 cnts reward for a mulatto boy named Sam,who was bound to the late Henry JOHNSON,Sr.,and has run away, and is now at large. We warn parties against employing or harboring him.His age is 14 years. While in Memphis last week,we witnessed the hanging of the mulatto,Frank SCOTT.About 800 people were there, men, women and children. There is nothing that can beat a circus getting in a crowd, but a first class hanging.SCOTT met death like a man,as did Wm.WILLIAMS,who was hung at Bartlett, and McLEAN at Jackson, all the same day--and Friday was not a good day for hanging either. Mrs.Mary E.POPE,who is well-known in our city as an excellent lady and teacher, and will return to our city and open a private school about the 15th inst. Among the young ladies visiting our city,is the bright and sparkling sister of our well known druggists,J.W. and Beaumont HUGHES.Miss HUGHES expresses herself as delighted with West Tennessee and especially Brownsville. Her former and present residences,Murfreesboro and Columbia,Tennessee. SAMUEL T.JOHNSON---This lamented and greatly beloved young man died in Denver,Colorado,on the 5th inst.,of consumption.Last spring he went to Colorado, accompanied by his wife, with the hope that its high elevation and dry atmosphere would benefit his health, and for a time it seemed to do so,but it worked no permanent change for the better, and after some months of sickness, our young friend fell victim as before stated,of that disease which is beyond the hope of human remedy, consumption,Wednesday night,in the city of Denver. His remains reached this city at five o'clock Monday evening last, and were taken to the residence of his brother,R.F.JOHNSON,on Washington street. His burial took place in Oakwood Cemetery yesterday at 11 o'clock,in the presence of a large number of his personal friends and relatives. The funeral services were conducted by the Rev.Guilford JONES.His death was universally regretted by all who knew him.He had no enemies and many warm and devoted friends. His disposition was amiable and his character was in the highest degree irreproachable. With so much to make life desirable and happy,he has passed away. The earth, with all its joys and sorrows,is to him a thing of yesterday forever. He has past through the rent vail, and is with the silent world of mysteries ans shadows.(A poem is with this obit and if any descendent wants a copy of it,e-mail me.) EXECUTION OF McLEAN (FROM THE JACKSON DISPATCH)REPUBLISHED IN THE DEMOCRAT--- At 11 o'clock this Friday morning,January 7th,accompanied by Sheriff MAY,and others,we entered the cell in which McLEAN was confined. The Sheriff told McLEAN that the time was up for him to be carried to the gallows.McLEAN said,"All right." The cell was opened and a new suit of clothes was handed him.He immediately dressed himself. Then his wife was called. She entered the cell, threw her arms around her husband's neck and embraced him for the last time. The scene was a sad one.Oh,who, but Our Heavenly Father, knows the suffering of the heart of that stricken wife? When told by the Sheriff that he must go,he embraced his wife for the last time-the meeting and the parting of the wife and doomed husband was indeed a sad one.His hands were then tied and he was carried down to the gate where the wagon with the coffin was waiting,in which he took his seat, accompanied by Rev.Dr.SLATER,and other ministers, who had visited his cell often for the last month, and did all they could to bring him to Christ. When on the way to the gallows McLEAN remarked to Rev.Mr.McNAIR,that there was a large crowd, which was about all he had to say.On reaching the gallows, about five thousand people were waiting to witness the sad scene.McLEAN was the first to ascend the scaffold, which he did with a firm step.Sheriff MAY announced that it liked forty minutes to one,the hour of the execution.Dr.SLATER then asked the prisoner if he wanted all the christians present to pray for him,to which McLEAN replied that he did, whereupon they all knelt in prayer. The religious execises upon the platform were as follows:Rev.E.McNAIR read that portion of the 20th chapter of Exodus containing the decologne. After which Rev.E.C.SLATER read the hymn beginning: "There is a fountain filled with blood," which was sung by those immediately around the scaffold.Mr.McLEAN was ask during the singing as to whether his trust was in Christ. When the hymn was concluded,he bowed his head in assent.Rev.E.McNAIR addressed the Throne of Grace in behalf of the condemned man in an earnest and sympathic manner. Next,E.C.SLATER said that as the law had been read he would now read a lesson from the 10th chapter of Romans, setting forth the simplicity of faith and the directness of the plan of salvation. After reading the lesson,he turned to the condemned man and asked him if he desired the christians in the assembly to pray for him.He bowed his acquiesence as before.A few minutes to one o'clock, the ministers and friends bade him farewell;the Sheriff then tied the rope around his neck,McLEAN at the time, glanced with a steady eye for the last time on the assembled crowd;the black cap was then drawn over his face, and at one o'clock, the deadly trap was sprung and the unfortunate man was launched into eternity. He made no struggle to show that he suffered any pain. After handing five minutes,Dr.COLLINS and LANIER felt his pulse and pronounced him not dead;and at fifteen minutes his pulse still beat. After hanging thirty minutes Drs. COLLINS & LANIER again examined him and pronounced life extinct. He was then cutdown-the body turned over to his wife and friends. After witnessing this solemn event, the crowd dispersed to their various homes, determined we hope, never to take the life of his, save in self-defense.We deem it proper to atate that a short time previous to the execution,Dr.SLATER asked McLEAN if he had any recollection of killing POPE.He said he did remember that he killed him.Dr.SLATER then asked him what influenced him to commit the dded.He said he had been taking drugs. He further said he killed POPE in the heat of passion. His counsel did all in their power to free him from the shameful death he died, and also to relieve his heart- broken wife and helpless children from the stigma that will ever rest with them.Several friends who knew him in his better days exerted themselves in carrying around a petition which was numerously signed, praying the Governor to commute his sentence to penitertiary for life. The Governor heard their representatives, but declined to interfere with the regular execution of the law. Thus the doomed man was left without hope so far as this world was concerned, but we indulge the hope that he has gone to a tribunal, where all alike receive impartial justice. The day was all brilliant, beautiful, lovely and nothing occurred to mar the joy of the town, except the sad event.
