JUDGE R.R.WEST,one of the oldest and most prominent citizens of North Mississippi,died at his residence in Hernando,at the age of 88 years on the 29th.Judge WEST was a brother-in-law of Messrs.J.M.& B.F.CLARK,of this city,both of whom were present at the funeral. MRS.MARY EDMONDS,mother of MR.W.B.EDMONDS,of this city,died at her home in Milan on Christmas day,after an illness of a week's duration,aged 59 years. On Saturday last,at his residence east of the city,LEMUAL ALSTON THOMAS laid down the affairs of men,and passed into the domain of the great unknown,aged 65 years,6 months.Major THOMAS was born near Durhamville and passed the whole of his life in West Tenn.,save the four years devoted to the service of the Southern Confederacy.In 1867 he married Miss Julia MOODY,who together with six daughters and two sons survive him.Interment in Oakwood Cemetery. AN UNFORTUNATE SHOOTING AFFRAY--took place on Christmas day near the Hollinshead place six miles north of town,in which young TOM HOLLINSHEAD lost his life.Early Christmas morning JOHN JACKSON and his brother went to the store of HOLLINSHEAD to settle an account; a difference of 15 cents in the claim caused a dispute and young HOLLINSHEAD,who was drinking,got his pistol and the negroes ran.The negroes wounded by HOLLINSHEAD were JOHN JACKSON, HENRY JACKSON, WALTER JACKSON and ANDREW PUGH. JOHN JACKSON returned fire,killing HOLLINSHEAD,who was only 15 years old.(very lenthy article.) SOCIAL AND PERSONAL--MR.JAMES F.THOMAS and MISS NETTIE WILLIAMS were united in marriage at the home of the bride's mother,Mrs.Amanda WILLAMS in the 5th District on December 27th,Esq.R.G.HERRING officiating. E.S.WHITELAW,a former Brownsville man,son of Mr.J.P.WHITELAW,was married to MISS ROSE MARTIN,of Portalis,New Mexico on Wednesday,the 16th of December. MR.VERNON BOOTH and MISS LUNA MAY STEWART were united in marriage at the home of the bride's father,G.L.STEWART,near Jones in the 5th District on Sunday Dec.6th 1903,Esq.R.G.HERRING officiating. An interesting marriage took place at the Methodist parsonage on December 30th,when JOHN R.CHRISTMAS and MISS EDNA JACKSON were united by Rev.R.M.KING. A.B.HUDSON,traveling salesman for J.A.AUSTIN & Co.,of Memphis,and MISS R.S.SCHREIBER of St.Louis were married Saturday at the Brownsville Female College,the ceremony performed by Rev.J.R.LAWRENCE. MR.HENRY J.CLAIRBORN and MISS THERESA DAVIE were married at the residence of the bride's parents near Ged on Wednesday,Rev.R.M.KING officiating. COVINGTON,TENN.DEC.26TH--JAMES F.HARGROVE,of Memphis,son of James HARGROVE of Hargrove Springs,Lauderdale County,and MISS MORIE EVANS,daughter of James EVANS of Brownsville,were united in marriage at the Presbyterian parsonage last night by Rev.J.D.WALLACE. Petition for Divorce. ********* VOL.37 NO.4 FRIDAY JANUARY 8,1904 LOCAL NEWS--BORN to MR.& MRS.R.E.WHITEHURST,on Dec.30th,a fine 10 1/2 pound baby girl.Mother and child doing well. On Monday before the County Court,MRS.MAGGIE KLYCE qualified as administratrix of the estate of THOS.N.KLYCE,deceased,under a bond of $2000.00. MR.HOUSTON BARCROFT who has been suffering from pneumonia since Sunday last is dangerously ill at the residence of his mother. LOU VIRGINIA,infant daughter of DR.& MRS.WALTER RAGLAND,died at the family residence at Mercer on Tuesday last,aged about three years.The remains were brought here and buried on Wednesday in Oakwood,from the residence of F.B.RAGLAND,Rev H.B.JOHNSTON officiating. ELIZABETH J.,wife of Esq.J.L.WEAVER,passed away at the family residence six miles west of town,on Monday the 4th,aged 68 years.Born in this county May 24,1836,daughter of JOHN & SARAH PARKER,pioneer settlers,she was married to J.L.WEAVER Sept.16,1852.An attack of pneumonia,lasting about five days was the cause of death.On Tuesday morning last her remains were interred in Oakwood Cemetery. SOCIAL AND PERSONAL--MR.W.M.SHAW of Bells and MRS.ADA THOMAS were quietly married at the residence of Mr.& Mrs.John LEATH on Sunday,Rev.H.B.JOHNSTON officiating. MR.ERNEST B.DRAKE and MISS MORCIA GORDON were married at the residence of Elder R.G.MARBURY on Sunday January 3,1904. MISS LORAINE ANDERSON,adopted daughter of Mr.& Mrs.Ed JENNINGS left for McKenzie where she will attend school. MRS.JOHN CONNER,JR.,of Ashport,accompanied by her son,Emmett,and two daughters,Misses Lucile and Letitia,spent Monday here,guests of relatives.Emmett returned to Russellville and the young ladies to Nashville where they attend school. ********* VOL.37 NO.5 FRIDAY JANUARY 15,1904 SPRINGHILL--MR.POPE YANCY,of Memphis and MISS SUSIE ADAMS were married at the residence of Mr.W.H.ADAMS last Sunday night. REIN--MRS.OLA WATRIDGE,of Humboldt returned home Sunday after visiting her parents,MR.& MRS.John F.WHITE. CAROLINA--MR.WILL ALLEN,of Tibbs and MISS EULA CARTER of Dyer were married during the Christmas holidays,Rev.W.U.MARTIN officiating. LOCAL NEWS--We regret to learn of the seriuos illness of MR.GEORGE A.RICHARDSON at his home near Ged. MOSE WHITE,a well-known colored plasterer and old resident died of consumption at his home on Tuesday night.He had many friends among the white people and lived a creditable and upright life. The late MAJOR L.A.THOMAS who died on the 26th of December was insured in the Endowment rank K.& P.for the $3,000.Check in payment of same was issued Jan.7th and the same paid the widow this week. LITTLE JOSEPH O.HOLBROOK,infant son of Mr.& Mrs.W.R.HOLBROOK died at the family home in South Brownsville on Sunday night and was buried in Oakwood on Monday evening.He was only about six months old. MR.ALBERT HOUSTON BARCROFT died at the residence of his mother on Friday last at 11 a.m.The mother; four sisters; and two young brothers survive. SOCIAL AND PERSONAL--At the Poplar street station,Memphis on Tuesday evening of last week,ANDREW BLLODWORTH of Cacillia,Miss.,and MISS ALMA G.MOORE,of this city were married bt Esq.PERKINS.The bride is a native of this county and a daughter of Dr.MOORE. Seldom is there seen a more beautiful wedding than that which took place on the 29th of December at the country home of MR.CRANLEY HOWSE,of Eurekaton,with his daughter,MISS MARY SUE HOWSE and JOHN B.CROSS as the contracting parties ana Dr.W.G.INMAN officiating.Mr.CROSS is the youngest son of Esq.N.B.CROSS of Whiteville. Mrs.S.J.SMITH and Miss Dors NEELY are visiting their sister,Mrs.MAHONEY in Memphis.They were called there on account of the illness of Mrs.MAHONEY. Mr.JOHN McDONALD of Phelan,Tipton County who has been visiting his brother,ALEX McDONALD in the 8th District for several days returned home Tuesday. ********* VOL.37 NO.6 FRIDAY JANUARY 22,1904 CAROLINA--MR.E.A.RAWORTH,of Redwood,Miss.,who has been up on a visit to his family since the holidays,will return this week.Mr.Allen RAWORTH will go with his father on his return to Miss.,and Dick RAWORTH will take charge of the farm here. MRS.W.P.BOND left Saturday for Mason,being called to the bedside of her daughter,Mrs.W.A.CLEMENT who was reported to be quite sick. The stork visited the home of Mr.& Mrs.NED GRAVES and left a nine pound boy.Glad to hear that mother and child are doing well.Ned says he's just like all babies,"bald-headed and no teeth." CATALPA--JAMES B.WILLIAMSON,Esq.who has recently been elected magistrate to fill the place made vacant by the death of his father,R.D.WILLIAMSON.John B.WILLIAMSON has bought the entire stock of dry goods and groceries from James B.WILLIAMSON of Catalpa. MR.WILLIS A.OVERTON and MISS JULIA MUSGRAVE were married on the 13th of Jan. at Mr.BIRDSONG's residence near Catalpa near Madison County.The ceremony was performed by James B.WILLIAMSON,Esq. RUDOLPH--Little FANNIE KATE,daughter of MR.GEORGE JONES is sick with typhoid fever. REIN--HERBERT MARBURY and MISS MADGE WEBB were married last Tuesday at the residence of his grandfather,Rev.R.G.MARBURY. MR.FRANCIS MARBURY and MISS ADDLINE CAIN of Jones Station were married at the residence of Esq.R.G.HERRING Sunday. A number of our people attended the burial of MR.G.LEE WALKER at Tabnernacle Sunday evening. LOCAL NEWS--MRS.SARAH A.FERGASON died at her Memphis home on Tuesday.As hostess at her elegant Lauderdale County home,she entertained many Brownsville people. MARY ROGERS,a colored girl raised by the late Mrs.E.L.McLESKEY died at her home in Broensville Sunday.Mary was a good girl,respected by all who knew her. The will of MRS.ELIZABETH J.WEAVER was probated in County Court last Saturday.All the estate real and personal is given to her husband,J.L.WEAVER. Dr.HAYWOOD left Wednesday for Fulton,Ky.,having received a telegram summoning him to the bedside of MISS PATTIE ROGERS HALLIBURTON,daughter of Mr.& Mrs.J.H.HALLIBURTON,who is dangerously ill.Dr.ALLEN received a call to the same case the day before. Little ANGIE,infant son of Mr.& Mrs.TOM HUMPHREYS died at the family residenc at Forked Deer on Wednesday last and was buried the following day. MR.LEE WALKER died at his residence two miles east of town and was buried at Tabernacle Sunday morning.He was an old citizen having moved to this section immediately after the war when a youth.He was prominent in farming circles. MRS.MARTHA TAYLOR--relict of JOHN L.TAYLOR,of Memphis who died many years ago,died at her home in the 5th district on Thursday and was buried at Tabernacle the following day,Rev.R.M.KING conducting the services.Mrs.TAYLOR was a representive of a pioneer family and extensively known and loved in West Tennessee,being a daughter of the late Dr.BARBEE.She leaves three sons; a daughter; two brothers and three sisters. SOCIAL AND PERSONAL--MR.& MRS.ROBERT H.WILHOITE,of Sheffield,Ala.,announce the engagement of their daughter,FLORENCE to SEMPLE WILSON TUTWILER of Birmingham,the wedding to take place this spring. MR.C.P.TALIAFERRO and MISS BESSIE McMURRY both of this county were married in Memphis on the 6th day of this month.The bride is the granddaughter of the late George FARRIS,while the groom is the son of L.V.TALIAFERRO. Mr.& Mrs.JOHN HALLIBURTON and little daughter left last week for Pass Christian,Miss.Mr.HALLIBURTON has had a contract with the Illinois Central Railroad and has located his family in Fulton,Ky.Mrs.HALLIBURTON and daughter will remain on the Gulf Coast during the winter. ********* VOL.37 NO.7 FRIDAY JANUARY 29,1904 CAROLINA--Mr.Will MOORE and sister,Miss Ada,have been guests of their sister,Mrs.A.S.HIGGINS.Miss Ada left yesterday for Price,Tenn.,where she will have charge of the school the present year. Master Irvin CLEMENT and sister,Miss Elizabeth of Tipton County are visiting their grandparents,Mr.& Mrs.W.P.BOND. REIN--The people of the community were shocked on Monday morning when a telephone message was received announcing the death of MR.ARTHUR DULIN.Mrs.DULIN was reared in this immediate neighborhood. Mr.W.N.McCLISH of Jackson attended the burial of his brother-in- law,Mr.Arthur DULIN. LITTLE PATTIE ROGERS HALLIBURTON--the only child of Mr.& Mrs.John H.HALLIBURTON,died of pneumonia at Fulton,Ky.,on Tuesday January 26th at 2 p.m.The remains were interred in Oakwood at 2:30 from the residence of R.M.BOND on Wednesday evening,Rev.Joe McLESKEY conducting the service. DEATH OF ARTHUR DULIN--He was a newspaperman,farmer and cotton buyer.He was born in Charleston,S.C.in 1853 and moved to Brownsville with his parents,two sisters and a brother-in-law,all of whom are now dead in 1872.He was twice married; first to MISS READ in 1882.She died in 1887,leaving one child,now grown; second to MISS McCLISH in 1895,who with an infant child survives.The remmains were interred in Oakwood cemetery. SOCIAL AND PERSONAL--Mr.& Mrs.John COOK announce the marriage of their daughter,MISS EFFIE COOK to MR.CHARLES SHERMAN TALIAFERRO Wednesday February 3rd at 2:30 p.m.at their residence three miles north of town. MR.CALVIN BURNS and MISS EVA GRAY,a young couple from Lauderdale County were married by Esq.BRADFORD at Bond's livery stable on Tuesday of last week. A wedding of wide interest was solmnized last evening at the Central Methodist Church when MISS MARTHA JARNIGAN SHELBY and HENRY J.LIVINGSTON,Jr.,were married. Mr.Wesley HALLIBURTON of Memphis,attended the funeral of his neice,Miss Patti Rogers HALLIBURTON. Mesdames Geo.I.CURRIE and R.N.BOND went to Fulton,Ky.,Monday to attend the bedside of little Miss Pattie Rogers HALLIBURTON.They remained until the child's death and accompanied Mrs.HALLIBURTON here where the body was brought for burial. ********* VOL.37 NO.8 FRIDAY FEBRUARY 5,1904 REIN--MRS.M.J.SHAW died suddenly last Friday the 29th of January at the redisence of her nephew,Mr.Jos.T.JACOCKS.She was a MISS JACOCKS and is the last of the older heads of the JACOCKS family; the only daughter of Jonathan T.JACOCKS,Esq.one of the first settlers of Haywood County.Her husband,Archibald SHAW died about 35 years ago,since which time she had made her home with her brothers,Jos.B. and Jno.H.JACOCKS until their deaths when her nephew,Jno.T.JACOCKS was appointed her guardian.She only lacked one day being 77 years old.The burial service was conducted by W.L.RICHARDSON on Saturday at tha JACOCKS family burying ground in the presence of a number of relatives and friends. REIN--MR.C.B.ENGLISH,of Brunswick,Shelby County,died at his home January 26th,aged 71 years and 9 months.Born in Kentucky,he had accumulated a large estate,being owner of about 6 thousand acres of land in Shelby County.He leaves his wife; one sister; and several neices and nephews.He was a brother of the late T.C.ENGLISH,who died some years ago in the Eighth District of this county and an uncle of Mrs.Mary S.FREEMAN of this vicinity. LOCAL NEWS--Died on Tuesday morning February 2nd 1904 at the home of her daughter,Mrs.M.J.CHAMBERLAIN,four miles northeast of Brownsville,MRS.ELIZA WELLS IN THE 87TH YEAR OF HER AGE,after a long and painful illness.The remains were taken to her old home near Peotone,Ill.,and laid to rest beside her husband who died 30 years ago. LOCAL NEWS--The sad intelligence reached here Wednesday afternoon of the death of MRS.WILL BROCKWAY at her home in Virginia Wednesday morning.Her death was caused by typhoid pneumonia and was quite unexpected.Mrs.BROCKWAY was born and reared in Brownsville the only daughter of the late Major Hiram S.BRADFORD,and Miss Mamie BRADFORD was most loved,a musician as a vocalist and pianist.In 1881 she was married to W.G.BROCKWAY and until recently they lived in Alabama.She leaves an aged mother and a young daughter just grown.Her remains were carried to Alabama to be laid to rest by her little daughter,Nell. SOCIAL AND PERSONAL--MR.ED E.MARBURY and MISS NORA B.DRAKE were united in marriage at the home of the bride's father,Mr.John G.DRAKE in the 5th District on Feb.3rd at 10:30 a.m.Esq.R.G.HERRING officiating. J.R.McDONALD superintendent of public instruction of Crockett County and MISS MATTIE COOK,of Alamo,Tenn.,were married Tuesday at the residence of Dr.W.H.COOK of Alamo,Tenn.,the Rev.R.A.COOK,of Fulton,Ky performing the ceremony. Mrs.Russell DANCE of Corinth,Miss.,came up to attend the burial of Patti Rogers HALLIBURTON. Rev.Joe McLESKEY,of Newbern,Messrs.W.H.McLESKEY and W.H.FORBIS of Fulton,Ky attended the burial of little eight-year-old Patti Rogers HALLIBURTON. ********* VOL.37 NO.9 FRIDAY FEBRUARY 12,1904 COVINGTON,TENN.FEBRUARY 8TH--MISS IVORY DURHAM,the 17 year-old daughter of H.P.DURHAM,of Hot Springs,Ark.,in the early hours of last night committed suicide by shooting herself through the heart with a revolver.The act was done at the residence of V.L.OGILVIE,on South Main street,the home of the young lady.The dead girl's mother died in Covington some ten years ago,and upon dying gave Ivory to Mr.& Mrs.OGILVIE with whom she has been living ever since as a member of the family. LOCAL NEWS--Rev.H.B.JOHNSTON was called to Ripley Wednesday morning to attend the funeral of his brother,J.A.JOHNSTON,who died at his residence in that place Tuesday night of pneumonia,aged 62 years. LITTLE HUGH,son of A.R.& E.O.JOYNER after an illness of about four week from the effects of measles,died February 5th,1904.He was the youngest of five children,the family's favorite and everybody's pet. CAROLINA--MR.& MRS.PINK WALLS of Tibbs have the sympathy of the community in the loss of their little child from pneumonia last Saturday. SOCIAL AND PERSONAL--Mr.& Mrs.Chas.TUCKER announce the marriage of their daughter,HOSIE BROWN COPPEDGE to MR.W.B.CLEVELAND of Cleveland,Ohio Thursday February 18th at 8 p.m. at Presbyterian Church,Stanton. DEATH OF REV.GEORGE JOHNSTON--A special from Ripley,dated on the 5th inst.,announced the death of Rev.George JOHNSTON,father of Rev.H.B.JOHNSTON,pastor of the Methodist Church of this place,at the home of his son,J.A.JOHNSTON,after a severe illness with a severe cold and general collapse of his whole system.He had almost reached 83 years of age,being born in Orange Co.N.C.,March 2,1821.He leaves three sons,J.A.& T.L.JOHNSTON of Ripley and Rev.H.B.JOHNSTON of Brownsville; two surviving daughters, Mrs.T.H.GREAVES of Ripley and Mrs.Ben HART of Double Bridges.Burial in Holmes cemetery near Durhamville. ********* VOL.37 NO.10 FRIDAY FEBRUARY 19,1904 CROCKETT COUNTY NEWS--MR.JAS.JENKINS,one of the oldest and most substantial citizens of this district died Sunday night and was buried at the Loving graveyard Monday.His funeral was preached by Rev.Dr.INMAN of Humboldt. Prof.J.A.McDONALD visited his daughter,Mrs.Chas WILLIAMS in Henderson,Texas this week. In the removal of A.W.HAWKINS,his sons,Logan,Eldon and Will with their families and Mr.E.JONES to Alabama,this community sustains a great loss.Mr.HAWKINS has bought a large amount of timberland and will engage in the sawmill business. Mr.D.BRADENBERRY,of Gadsden,has the sympathy of his friends in the death of his nine-year-old girl,which sad event occurred last Saturday. REIN--Mr.Rupert COBB near this place is reported being very low with pneumonia. Dr.C.R.TAYLOR was called in consultation with Dr.G.R.THOMAS yesterday.Mr.COBB was first taken with measles a few days ago and then went into pneumonia. CATALPA--T.G.STANFIELD has been pronounced insane and sent to Bolivar asylum;probably it would have been better if he had been sent sooner. MRS.NANCY LAYMAN MITCHELL,AGED 103.FAYETTE,MO.FEB.14TH--She celebrated her 103rd birthday on the 3rd,died Friday morning of old age.She was born in Knoxville,Tennessee. MR.T.J.ESCUE--aged forty-eight years,died at his residence in the Tenth District Friday January 12th of malaria.A wife and ten children survive. LILLIE--the bright and sweet eight-year-old daughter of MR.& MRS.JAMES CURLIN died at the family residence in the 4th District on the 12th inst.,of pneumonia. WALTER MOSLEY--colored; convicted and sent to the penitentiary about one year ago is reported dead.He was killed by falling slate while at work in one of the state's coal mines. MISS MOLLIE McCOY--died on Saturday January 13th of consumption at the residence of Mr.J.H.DEZERN.The deaceased was 50 years old. EARL KEATHLEY OURY--the infant son of Mr.& Mrs.Sam OURY died on the 11th of February at the home of Mrs.J.J.TINSDALE in Hardeman County. IN MEMORIUM--GEORGE LEE WALKER,son of Garrison and Lucinda WALKER,was born in Alamance County,N.C.March 4,1848 and died at his residence near Brownsville,Tenn.,January 16,1904.He came to this county in 1869.He was twice married,first on September 3,1871 to MISS LAVINIA BARCLAY,who was mother of his six children.He was married the second time to MRS.WLIZABETH GREEN on February 7,1894.He was buried at Tabernacle Sunday evening,January 17th. SOCIAL AND PERSONAL--A quiet home wedding was solmnized Monday evening at 7 o'clock at the home of the bride's aunt,MRS.J.E.CARTER, when MRS.LAURA BROWN and MR.JOHN CLINTON,Jr were married,Dr.SHOLL performing. ********* VOL.37 NO.11 FRIDAY FEBRUARY 26,1904 PERSONALS--Mrs.Bettie WALKER, Mrs.A.H.CORNWELL,and Miss Marion CORNWELL spent a few days in Stanton this week where they went to attend the burial of the little daughter of Mr.& Mrs.James WALKER. MR.EDW.ROOKS--of Allens,died at his residence Thursday last.Mr.ROOKS was an old citizen of the county,served with great credit in the Confederate army and was at one time prominent in politics and an authority on farming matters. GARLAND KING--a young negro man from the Woodville neighborhood employed at the spoke mill of the Hatchie Mfg.Co.,located in the 9th District near T.O.BOND's store was hurt Monday morning.A pulley wheel bursted and he was struck in the head by one of the flying pieces and crushed his skull. SUSAN MARION FREEMAN--daughter of Mr.& Mrs.W.A.FREEMAN died at the residence of her parents in Bartlett on Sunday,the 14th of February 1904 and was buried in Elmwood Cemetery in Memphis the following Tuesday.She was only fifteen years of age and her death is much regretted by friends and relatives in this county. MORTIMER JOYNER--aged 15 years,the oldest son of Rev & Mrs.Neville JOYNER,died after a painful illness at the Episcopal rectory in Bolivar Monday.The remains were interred in Polk Cemetery Tuesday morning,services by Rev.H.W.WELLS of Jackson. THE MANY FRIENDS--in this vicinity of MR.& MRS.W.F.HAMNER will sympathize with them in their loss of their little daughter,ELIZABETH,who died at the family home in Memphis on Wednesday of last week,aged six years,6 months and twenty-five days.The remains were brought here on Thursday and interred at Tabernacle. DIED--At the home of her parents in West Madison February 12th,Lyla Frankie CURLIN,only child of J.C.& Musa CURLIN,thus depriving their home of its light and joy.She was only sick for twenty-four hours with pneumonia. MR.GEORGE W.HILDEBRANT--died last Friday afternoon at his lumber camp in Mississippi of congestion.He was 64 years of age and leaves a wife and five children.His remains were carried to his home on Mulberry street in Memphis Saturday.Funeral services were Sunday by Rev.C.S.SHOLL,burial in Forrest Hill Cemetery.He,with his family formerly lived here,having moved to Memphis nearly two years since. TRIBUTE OF RESPECT--The many friends of Mr.J.S.MARTIN and family were made sad by the death of the beloved wife and mother which occurred Saturday,February 27th,1904 at the home near Danceyville.The remains were interred in Spring Hill Cemetery Sunday afternoon,February 28th.(very long account of her good qualities.) FRANK LEIGH--for the past 35 years a drayman for various parties,died at his home here on Saturday last and was buried on Sunday.Uncle Frank was a "fo de war" darkey,who attended to his own affairs,worked at all times and commanded the respect and confidence of both races.In slave days he belonged to the elder Wm.R.LEIGH,father of Mrs.KILLEBREW and the present attorney,Wm.R.LEIGH. MR.WILL BARNES--a well-known citizen and a saw mill man,residing six miles east of town,was shot five times and dangerously wounded by MR.H.E.WHITELAW on last Wednesday morning.It is generally thought a case of self-defense. Mr.G.D.FURLONG of Atta,Iowa is visiting his father,Mr.Samuel FURLONG. ********* VOL.37 NO.13 FRIDAY MARCH 11,1904 CATALPA--On the 22nd day of February another one of our friends and fellow comrades,R.A.WILSON,of Company F,31st infantry died at his home near Creevy.He was elected 2nd lieutenant in place of D.S.CHANDLER,resigned and served until the 31st and 33rd regiments were consolidated at which time he was ordered to report to General Forrest's command.Afterwards he joined Kyser's Scouts,made a good and faithful soldier in all the departments he served.He was confined to his room for many long months and bore his sufferings with great patience.One by one the old veterans are passing away.The family has our sincere sympathy. MR.HENRY BARNES,who was shot five times last week by young Howell WHITELAW,has contracted a severe case of pneumonia in both lungs and is not expected to recover. MR.W.A.HERRING and MR.G.B.CARVIN--prominent young business men and farmers of Rein,died last Friday after brief illnesses of pneumonia. R.G.HERRING,ESQ.--candidate for the Legislature,on account of serious sickness in his family and the death of his brother,has been unable to canvass for votes. COL.T.N.HUGHES--one of the best-known and most prominent citizens of Haywood County died at his home in Danceyville last Saturday morning at the advanced age of 71 years and was buried in the village graveyard the following day.The deceased came to the county in 1857 from Lincoln County,Tenn.He is a member of the Methodist Church,was a Confederate soldier and served under General Forrest.Several sons and daughters survive,among them Judge Allen T.HUGHES of Jonesboro,Ark.Mr.HUGHES had accumulated considerable money and other property. C.T.PARKER--aged 23 years,died at the residence of his father,K.H.PARKER,in the 12th District after a lingering illness of consumption on Sunday night last.He was a youth of much promise and his loss to his family and friends will be always felt. MR.MORGAN CARVIN--a younger brother of BUN CARVIN,who died the week before,died with the same disease,pneumonia at the family residence near Allen's on Saturday and was buried Monday at Baptist Zion Church in the 6th District.He was an excellant young man.The family have much sympathy in their double affliction. MRS.BETTIE WHITEHURST--relict of the late Ben WHITEHURST,died on Friday evening of pneumonia and was buried on Saturday evening of pneumonia and was buried on Saturday evening in the Whitehurst burying ground in District 9.She was 64 years old and leaves six living children,four boys and two girls.Services were conducted by Rev.C.S.SHOLL.Mrs.WHITEHURST was a MISS CHANDLER,of an old Haywood County family. W.H.BARNES--who was shot by Howell WHITELAW several weeks ago,died Thursday night of last week and his remains were buried at Denmark,Madison County,the following day. LAST WEEK--we announced the death of MRS.MAGGIE RAINEY at the family residence in Forked Deer.This was a MISTAKE on our part.The lady who died was Mrs.MATTIE RAINEY,daughter of Mr.& Mrs.H.A.RAINEY.She married Mr.T.C.RAINEY about two years ago and was living in Meridian,Miss.when notified of the dangerously illness of her father about four weeks since,to whose bedside she immediately came,bringing with her their only child.She nursed her father and waited on other members of the family who were sick at the time,until she was afflicted with lagrippe,then measles,then pneumonia of which she died. MR.& MRS.J.D.CURTIS--were called to Paris last Friday to attend the bedside of his sister,MRS.T.C.McCALL,who has been in a low stage of health for some months.She died Saturday morning at her home five miles west of Paris.The deceased was a member of the Methodist Church and leaves her husband and four boys.Her renains were interred in the family graveyard Sunday evening. MISS ELLEN WHITE--sister of Mr.J.W.WHITE of this city,widely known in this county and Crockett where she resided all her life,died at the residence of her brother,Mr.Buck WHITE,near Rein Tuesday evening,April 4th of pneumonia.Her death was peculiarly sad as she had been called from her residence in Crockett county to nurse the family of her brother,whose wife died of the same illness about two weeks ago.Interment took place at Zion Church Wednesday. THE MONUMENTAL SLAB--donated by J.T.WHITEHEAD of Jackson,was erected at the grave of Comrade Mike McGRATH last Saturday by the local bivouac with appropriate ceremony. MRS.BETTIE PRACHT--widow of the late August PRACHT died at her home at this place last Friday morning,aged 67 years.Since the death of her husband two months ago,her health had gradually declined and her death was not wholly unexpected.During the long illness of her husband she gave to him the closest and most unrelenting care and attention which together with the sad bereavement by his death,was a great tax on her physical strength.Four children; C.W.PRACHT,John PRACHT,Mrs.T.W.POPE,and Mrs.John FRITCH survive her.Interment was in Oakwood Cemetery. SAVAGE'S PRAYER--The "old man of the mountains," soldier and statesman,is at death's door at his home in McMinnville.In a book which Colonel SAVAGE wrote of himself appears the following under the head of "Savage's Prayer." BELLS--The many friends of MISS ELLEN WHITE in this town were indeed sorry to hear of her death yesterday evening,which sad event occurred at the residence of her brother at Allen's Station.She was a noble self-sacrificing Christian lady. BELLS--The little three-year-old daughter of MR.BOB LOVING of near Gadsden was burned to death Monday afternoon while out in the field with her little brothers burning stalks. BELLS--The entire community was caused to mourn the death of MRS.E.HICKS which sad event occurred in Arkansas on Thursday of last week.Her remains were brought here and interred in Belleview Cemetery Friday afternoon,services conducted by Elder R.O.MEEKS. DR.A.W.SMITH--well-known in this county,died suddenly at his office in Ripley Thursday of last week. MR.WILLIAM TISDALE--An old Confederate soldier and prominent citizen,dropped dead at his home in Hardeman County on Monday of last week.Many relatives of the deceased live in this county. MR.JOHN C.WHARTON--died at his home in this city last Monday after a lingering illness.He was taken sick about the first of this year and but little hope has been entertained at any time for his recovery.He leaves a wife and six children; one brother,WILL WHARTON of Madison County.He was buried last Tuesday at the cemetery in Denmark,Rev.UNDERWOOD officiating. MR.C.C.MOODY--died at the home of his son,J.L.MOODY,at the advanced age of 68 years.He died suddenly of heart trouble.He leaves seven children to mourn the loss of a devoted father; three of whom reside in Little Rock,Ark.The four others live in Haywood and Crockett Counties.None of them were here with him at the time of his death but all of them attended the burial at Jones Station. Mr.J.J.KELSOE has taken unto himself a wife last Thursday. VIVIAN JEWELL--the four-year-old daughter of Rev.S.L.JEWELL,pastor of the Methodist Church at Trenton,Tenn.,was burned Monday and dies Tuesday.Mrs.JEWELL was also burned in trying to save her child. THE COMMUNITY--was deeply shocked to hear of the death of J.ROBERT BREWER,which occurred at the home of his father,J.A.BREWER,Wednesday about 12 o'clock.The remains were interred in Oakwood Cemetery,services by Rev.H.B.JOHNSTON. MR.WORTH HICKS--of Stanton,came up to Brownsville last Tuesday and while here became suddenly demented.It is said he had been in Memphis playing the races and had lost several hundred dollars.His brother,Mr.Thos.HICKS came up on the same day and carried him back to his home,where he is now. ESQ.J.L.WEAVER--died at the home of his daughter,Mrs.I.B.MARTIN,near Danceyville last Monday at 2:30 a.m.of pneumonia.At the time of his demise he was in his 73rd year,his wife having died a few months previous at an advanced age.The remains were interred in Oakwood Cemetery.The following children survive him: Mrs.J.L.HUNTER, Mrs.I.B.MARTIN, Mrs.Anna SULLIVAN, Mr.Will WEAVER of this county,and Mrs.M.B.BAILEY and Dr.Rush WEAVER of Texas. Dr.Rush WEAVER of Sherman,Texas is in the city.He was called here to attend the burial of his father,J.L.WEAVER. ********* VOL.37 NO.20 FRIDAY APRIL 29,1904 LAUDERDALE VILLAGE NEARLY DESTROYED--At Curve,a village in Lauderdale county,near Ripley,fire this morning destroyed J.G.THOMPSON's grocery, A.DUNAVANT's drug store, Dr.J.A.BRADFORD's office, and the Masonic lodge-room over it,and B.D.GAINES' residence.No insurance was carried by any one but THOMPSON,and the total loss will reach nearly $7,000. LOCAL NEWS--BORN to Mr.& Mrs.P.B.CLARKE,s fine son.The little fellow is now more than a week old. The tragic death of W.B.HENDERSON of Memphis deeply shocked his many friends in this county.Mr.HENDERSON,as a legislator and as a lawyer had achieved for himself an eminent position and his sad death ends a life that was bright with promise. Carl,the three-year-old son of Mr.& Mrs.JAMES LIVINGSTON,died Saturday at 4 a.m. at the family residence on South Margin street,of pneumonia.The remains were interred in Oakwood Cemetery,Rev.R.M.KING officiating. MR.WALTER S.BOND--died of his wounds Tuesday morning.His remains were interred in the family cemetery Wednesday morning,Revs.JENKINS,JOHNSON and KING officiating.His father,Mr.James BOND came to this state from North Carolina many years before the Civil War.Walter was the youngest of nineteen children and was only 33 years old when the summons from the grim reaper came. QUICK AND SPEEDY JUSTICE--THOMAS SEARCY,a colored boy about fifteen years old was lynched in the Nut Bush neighborhood on Thursday of last week.Criminal assault on a little white girl only seven years of age,the daughter of Mr.James LEA,was the revolting crime of which he was guilty.The little girl was on her way home from school late in the afternoon when she was overtaken and assaulted on the public highway by the negro brute.Three unsuccessful attempts were made by the negro to accomplish his purpose.He was finally frightened away by the screams of the little child.W.T.DAVIS,deputy sheriff was taking the negro to Brownsville when they were overhauled by an armed band of disguised men.The prisoner was taken by force and in a short time his lifeless body was dangling from a limb. RIPLEY ENTERPRISE--A telegram was received here Thursday evening of last week that Frank GLASS died at his home in Harrison,Ark.,that afternoon of appendicitis.He was a son of H.D.GLASS and a grandson of the late ex-congressman,P.T.GLASS.Deceased was a brother of Mrs.Max C.WILLIAMS of Ripley and formerly lived here. ********* VOL.37 NO.22 FRIDAY MAY 13,1904 REV.A.R.WILSON--at one time pastor of the Methodist church in this city and one of the oldest and most prominent members of the Memphis Conference died at his home in Dyersburg last Monday morning at the advanced age of 76 years. L.W.TATUM--died at the residence of Mrs.Mary BARCROFT in the Eighth District Thursday morning,May 12th at 4 o'clock of pneumonia,after an illness of eight days.His remains were buried at Zion,Rev.R.M.KING officiating. MISS SALLIE TALIAFERRO--who was committed to the Hospital for the Insane in Bolivar some three years ago,died in that institution last Saturday.The deceased was about 60 years of age.She was the daughter of Lyon S.TALIAFERRO and was the aunt of Messrs.C.M.and L.V.TALIAFERRO and Mrs.S.H.MATHEWS.The remains were interred in Oakwood Cemetery. MR.LEM KIRBY--a well-known resident of this county died at the home of his son near Curve,Tenn.,Saturday.His remains were brought here Sunday and interred in the family buring ground two miles east of town.He leaves three children and a host of relatives to mourn his loss. DIED FRIDAY MORNING--May 13th,1904,at the residence of her parents,Mr.& Mrs.J.R.NEBLETT,near Danceyville,MISS BERTHA NEBLETT in her 19th year.The deceased was attending school at Oxford,Miss.,when she was stricken with typhoid fever.She was removed to her home about four weeks ago where she lingered until released from suffering by the great reaper-death.Her remains were interred in the cemetery at Danceyville,Rev.H.V.HUMPHREYS officiating.She was the oldest child of a family of four. MR.SHEPHERD TROTTMAN--an old resident of Haywood county died on Tuesday last of pneumonia at his home in the Fifth District,and was buried at the old TROTTMAN burying ground on Wednesday.He was 70 years old and came of a Haywood pioneer family being the son of the late Reddick TROTTMAN.He was never married. MRS.MARY C.LEA--relict of the late Judge Ben J,LEA,died at the residence of her daughter,Mrs.John C.SANDERS in Lebanon,Tenn.,Saturday May 28th.The remains were brought to this city and buried from the residence of Mr.Geo.W.LYLE on Sunday evening last,services by Rev.W.W.ADAMS.She was born in this county about 70 years ago,married B.J.LEA about the year 1853.One sister; two daughters and a son survive her. ELDER R.G.MARBURY--died at his residence in this county on Saturday last and the remains were interred in the family burying ground the following day.He was born in North Carolina December 2,1809.He was twice married and is survived by his second wife and four sons of the firat marriage. Wm.S.TUGWELL--son of Rufus and Benarena TUGWELL was born in Haywood County Tennessee August 19th,1877;professed religion and joinrd the Methodist church when about 18 years old.When quite young he went into the drug business in Dresden,Tenn.In the prime of young manhood,that dread disease,consumption marked him its victim.He went to Texas in search of health.For more than three years he went from one resort to another battling for life.Finally on May 21,1904 while on his way from Seymour to Armarillo,stopping off at Clarendon for a rest,he had been in his room at a hotel only a few minutes alone when he fought his last battle and yeilded to the inevitable.His body was taken to Dallas and laid to rest with gentle hands and loving hearts. ********* VOL.37 NO.26 FRIDAY JUNE 10,1904 LOCAL NEWS--The two-year-old child,Bernice of Mr.& Mrs.Ben EDMONDS died on Saturday night.The remains were carried to Milan and interred there Sunday.She was sick only four days,the disease being flux. MR.JAMES SCOALS--aged nearly 85 years,died at the residence of Mr.J.E.CHAPMAN in this city on Saturday morning,and was interred in Oakwood the following afternoon.He was a native of county of Donegal,Ireland and came to America long before the war and for awhile engaged in steamboating,later railroading under the Confederate regime.He was employed by the father of Mr.CHAPMAN about 39 years since.The elder CHAPMAN dying,he became an attache of the three sons and remained with them. A TELEGRAM--dated Colorado Springs,Colo.,June 10th,1904 was received by Capt.C.H.JONES of this place informing him that his brother Maj.Norman C.JONES was killed by a train.Capt.JONES teegraphed to inter the body near where MINNIE HAWTHORNE was formerly buried.His brother had expressed a desire to be buried there.Maj.JONES was born and raised in Haywood County,Tenn.and was 68 years old.He and his brother,Capt.H.A.JONES in 1850 entered the commission business selling cotton.When war came,he joined Co.A.7th Tenn Cal as a private.He was paroled at Gainsville Ga.in 1865.He married Miss O'NEAL in 1866 at Columbus,Miss.He was a widower and left no children. THE STATES GRAPHIC--is in receipt of an invitation to attend the coming marriage of Rev.Wm.H.HESS,colored to Miss F.L.JONES,colored at Coal Valley,Ala.,on June 25th.The groom is the son of Henry HESS,the well-known and faithful pressman of this office. Rev.DAVID LEITH--was called to Jackson Wednesday to conduct the funeral service of MRS.G.H.RAMSEY,who was buried in that city yesterday.Mrs.RAMSEY was for several years corresponding secretary of the Woman's Foreign Missionary Society of the Memphis Conference.Her death occurred in an infirmary in Atlanta,Ga.where she was under treatment.-Somerville Reporter & Falcon. A LETTER--was received from MRS.DENNING,dated at Cisco,Ill.,returning thanks to the people of Brownsville for kindnesses and assistance tendered and rendered her and her children because of the sudden death of her husband on the Dickerson place last month which left her among strangers and without means to return to her old home.She and her little ones arrived at the place of her childhood safely and she is now employed in a canning factory. THE MANY FRIENDS--of Judge ALF A.FREEMAN and family sympathize with him in the death of his son,HUGH,which occurred at Carlsbad,New Mexico on Wednesday the 15th.Two days before the young man was thrown from a buggy and dragged some distance resulting in a fractured skull which caused his death.He was born in Brownsville April 28th 1875 and passed much of his life with his parents residing at Washington city or the West.Burial was in Carlsbad. THIS COMMUNITY--of late has experienced an unusual amount of lawlessness among negroes.On last Saturday night ED SANGSTER shot his step-father,ANDREW SMITH for beating his mother,then departed for parts unknown.On last Tuesday night BEN BRILEY shot and perhaps mortally wounded HAYS CHERRY.It seems CHERRY had been threatening the life of BRILEY and abusing his sister.(An operation was performed on CHERRY and he died Wednesday night.) WAS DROWNED IN HATCHIE RIVER.JACKSON,TENN.JUNE 18--JOHN TATE,formerly of the Illinois Central Shops of this city,but recently at a stave factory at Vildo,was drowned in the Hatchie river Thursday night.He was bathing in the river and got beyond his depth and was drowned before aid could be given him.He was a young man and respected by his neighbors.His body has not been recovered. Mr.E.H.TAYLOR who travels in the West,is home for a few days having been called here by the illness of his daughter,MISS ANNIE,who is still in Memphis under care of Dr.W.W. TAYLOR. MR.G.B.WILLIAMS of the Brownsville Bank received a telegram this week conveying the sad intelligence of the death of his wife's mother,Mrs.N.E.DURA at Auburn,New York Saturday. Mr.WILLIAMS wife was with her mother in her last illness. Capt.HRADY JONES has returned from Colo.,where he went to look after the property left by his deceased brother,MAJOR NORMAN C.JONES.His brother lived at Manitou Springs where he left valuable property,consisting of about $30,000 in valuable residence and city business houses.In addition,he left oil lands in vicinity of Beaumont,Texas.Major JONES left a will in which he gave all his property of all kinds to Capt.JONES and his brother,Henry JONES of Lauderdale County. The Friends of Mr.& Mrs.Franklin STURDIVANT were shocked on Thursday of last week to hear the latter had suffered a stroke of paralysis and was in an extremely critical condition.Mrs.STURDIVANT had recently been ill,but had nearly recovered when the attack came.She has remained nearly all week in a stupor. At a picnic at Cuthbert's Switch last Monday,JESSE,the little son of Mr.& Mrs.L.G.COVINGTON was the victim of a very painful accident.A horse hitched near the railroad became frightened at a passing train and ran over the little boy,breaking his leg and cutting his upper lip severely. MRS.POCAHONTAS PERKINS--widow of the late N.T.PERKINS died in this city at the residence of Mr.P.H.MANN last Wednesday night,aged 67 years.She was buried in Oakwood Cemetery,Rev.T.W.HUDSON officiating. ********* VOL.37 NO.31 FRIDAY JULY 15,1904 DEATH CAME TO COL.VALENTINE B.SEVIER--at his home in Jackson at 1:20 a.m. Saturday.He had suffered for some time from kidney trouble but the immediate cause of his death was a malignant carbuncle which had kept him confined to his home for nearly two weeks.He was born in Brownsville February 14th,1837.He was married quite early in life to Miss Evelyn WESTBROOK of Memphis.To this union there was born one child,John T.SEVIER,who now resides at Helena,Ark.His wife dying,he was afterwards married to Miss Mary Elizabeth WHITEHEAD,who survives him.To them were born ten children of whom the following are living: Mrs.H.W.WHITE of Jackson, Mrs.F.E.LACK and J.W.SEVIER of Paducah,Ky.,Charles W.and Robert T.SEVIER of Jackson.Col.SEVIER served in the Confederate army through the war as a member of Gen.CHEATHAM's brigrade,first as a lieut.then as Capt.About 1873 he was appointed to the U.S.mail service on the Illinois Central railroad and moved and made his home in Jackson.He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church,Knights of Honor,the John Ingram Bivouac,and the Association of railway Mail Clerks.He leaves half brothers and sisters as follows: James SEVIER,Mrs.Amanda LINK and Mrs.Kittie POTTER of Brownsville and J.B.SEVIER of Memphis.Interment in Hollywood Cemetery. LITTLE EVA MAY--daughter of Mr.& Mrs.Ed TINSLEY,aged five months,died Wednesday of last week and was buried in the Haralson burying ground the following day,Rev.R.M.KING officiating at the grave. AN UNUSUALLY SAD DEATH--which occurred last Friday was that of little OPAL CAMPBELL,only daughter of Mrs.Lee CAMPBELL and neice of Miss Sallie McMAHON.The little one was about eight-years-old.She had taken sick several days previous and on Friday succumbed to the complications of the diseases that had attacked her.The next day her body was taken to the old home in Stanton for interment. NEWS WHICH CAME--as a shock to her many friends was that of the death of MRS.MARY HENRY of Jackson last Thursday night.She and her sister,Mrs.Elizabeth HUDSON of Hanley,has come down to visit their two neices here,Mesdames George and James KINNEY;and Mrs.Henry's death occurred at the home of the former very suddenly early in the night,presumably of paralysis of the heart.She was 76 years old.On Friday the body was taken to her home in Jackson for burial. BEATRICE,a sweet little girl of Mr.& Mrs.S.M.WILLIAMS,died last Friday of the whooping cough and was buried Saturday afternoon at the family burying grounds. MR.A.M.AUSTIN,this week sold to Mr.George BLACKWELL the tract of wooded land of ten acres just in front of the Dan BOND residence about one mile from town; consideration $500.00. MR.S.L.CHAMBERS,depot agent for seventeen years has tendered his resignation to the L & N officials to take effect August 1st.Mr.CHAMBERS will locate in Texas.He is a fine business man familiar with his work and master of all its details,a perfect gentleman and his removel with his excellant family from our midst will be greatly regretted. THE ENTIRE COMMUNITY--and a large circle of friends sorrow with Rev.& Mrs.W.D.JENKINS in the loss of their daughter PANSY who died Tuesday afternoon.She had been taken sick in May and though she rallied was better at times,she never recovered completely and Tuesday her bright young life went out.She was nearly 17-years-old.On Tuesday night her parents and sorrowing friends left with the body for Union City to lay it at rest beside her older sister,Matilda,who died a few years ago. THE DEATH--of Mr.ROBERT J.SIMPSON occurred at his home on College street Tuesday night after a lingering illness of many months duration.There had been a serious complications of diseases and his death was expected.Funeral services were conducted at the home of the deceased Wednesday morning by Rev.C.W.HUDSON after which the interment took place in Oakwood under the auspices of the Knights of Pythlas.He was born in Haywood county forty three years ago and was reared in this vicinity.He leaves a wife and one son,Sheldon SIMPSON. LOCAL NEWS--Messers.Ed.ADAMS and Frank NUNN are in Hot Springs.Both of these popular young men were suffering from rheumatism and went there for relief. Aunt Lizzie BENNETT,an old colored,wife of Bill BENNETT,died Wednesday.She was esteemed as a faithful woman by all who knew her. Mrs.JEROME,an aged resident of the Salem Church neighborhood,east of town,died on Tuesday and was buried the following day.She was about 80 years old and had no relatives here,her only daughter having died about eight months since. Mr.Will KIRK,of Guthrie,Ky.,has moved to Brownsville and will on the 20th of this month,open a stock of dry goods,etc.,in the store building one door north of B.CENTRI's tailoring store on Depot Street. MR.J.T.SMOOT--who resided with his parents at Nut Bush died on Sunday morning last and was buried at Trinity the following afternoon.Some three weeks since the young man was attacked with typhoid fever and after a period of intense suffering blood poison intervened to which he succumbed in a very short time.He was the third of four brothers and a youth of much promise,a member of the Methodist Church.He was a nephew of Mr.S.A.BAYNES and up to about a year since was a clerk in his store. MR.JAMES M.COX--one of the oldest and beat known citizens of Brownsville,died at the home of his daughter,Mrs.A.W.CISCO in Bardstown,Ky.,on yesterday a week ago,being the 28th day of July 1904.A few months ago he went to Kentucky to spend sometime with Mrs.CISCO and soon after reaching there his health began to fail and continued to decline until the end came.He was 81 years of age and had lived here for more than half a century.Soon after the Civil War he went into the undertaker's business,which he conducted successfully until a few years ago,when he sold his interest in the business to his son,J.M.COX,Jr.All of his children:Mrs.W.R.HOLBROOK and James M.COX,Jr,of this place and Mrs.A.W.CISCO of Kentucky were present at the funeral which took place in Bardstown last Saturday morning,Rev.Charles ANDERSON officiating. MYSTERIOUS GROANS PUZZLING NEGROES IN FAYETTE COUNTY--Somerville,Tenn.,July 30.About nine miles northeast of town,on Mrs.D.V.MORROW's farm,is a little strip of woods and near by a cotton patch and thereby hangs a tale.At the edge of the day,night or day,there can be heard a mourning and groaning as if someone were in mortal agony.The sound comes from the ground but what produces the sound is the mystery to be solved.Everyone who has visited the spot has heard the noise and some of our best citizens are among the number.It was first heard about six weeks ago by PRIMUS MORROW,a colored man,who rents the farm.The groans are not continuous sometimes several minutes will elapse and then it will come again,very distinctly.The colored population and some of the whites are talking in whispers of a murder that was committed about 100 yards from there several years ago.A young negro woman was killed by a negro man,RUFUS WILKERSON,who has never been heard from since.Possibly the spirit of the duskey damsel is causing the distrubance,but probably not.At any rate the groaning can be heard and there is as yet no solution to the mystery. A TELEGRAM FROM LAS VEGAS,N.M.--Sunday afternoon to Miss Laura BRADFORD informed her of the death of Miss MATTIE BROCKWAY,a daughter of Mr.W.G.BROCKWAY and the late loved Mrs.Mamie BRADFORD.In her home in Gadsden,Ala.,she had contracted tuberculosis and with her family went West to drive away the dread disease but at last fell its victim.She was in her 20th year.Two members of her immediate family are left to mourn her; her aged grandmother,Mrs.Mattie BRADFORD,and her father.Her remains were carried to her home in Gadsden,Ala.,for interment by the side of her mother who was laid to rest in Feb. MRS.JUDGE HENRY--of Dallas,Texas died at her home last Wednesday.She was well known in Brownsville,being a neice of R.G.THOMAS,and was Miss Cornelia JAMESON,a member of the first graduating class of the B.F.C. LOCAL NEWS--Wednesday night between 8 and 9 o'clock burglers were discovered in Mrs.Sallie L.JEFFRIES' residence.The family was away and the house left in charge of Mrs.JEFFRIES' son,Leo,who with Johnnie WRIGHT were aboit to enter the house for the night when someone called out not to come in on him.The boys phoned night policeman DARNABY and he gave chase to a negro who got away.Nothing but a gold ring was stolen. IN A DIFFICULTY--between MR.GEO.W.POWELL,a prominent and peaceful citizen of the ninth district and ROBERT MOORE,colored,Wednesday about 8:30 a.m.the former was shot by the latter with a pistol.The ball entered the left cheek,grated the windpipe,ranged down,pentrated the neck and lodged in his right shoulder.The wound is not considered fatal by physician Dr.WHITELOW.The difficulty was over settlement for a bill of lumber Mr.POWELL had sold the negro.Mr.POWELL had made a contract with MOORE to haul logs to his sawmill,for which he was to receive lumber in payment.The negro escaped. MRS.MARY JOHNSON MILES--wife of Mr.Benj.C.MILES,died at her home on Jefferson street Wednesday at 9 p.m.after a very lingering period of suffering with comsumption.She was born in this county 58 years ago,the daughter of Mr.Henry JOHNSON.She leaves a husband and son to mourn her death;with two brothers,Henry and Robert JOHNSON;one sister,Mrs.W.B.CLAIRBORNE.Interment in Oakwood Cemetery. THE REMAINS--of MILTON STERNBERGER,the unfortunate young man who was shot and killed by his wife in Memphis at 6 p.m.Tuesday were brought to Brownsville,his old home for burial,Rabbi TAMM officiating at the grave in the Jewish cemetery.Deceased was a son of Mr.& Mrs.Mose STERNBERGER.The two brothers of the deceased in Memphis will take the body to Brownsville at 12:45 p.m.over the Louisville & Nashville railroad.The parents,four brothers and sister of the deceased,residing in Philadelphia have been notified of the tragedy,but none will come to the funeral.'The deceased came to his death by pistol shot wound inflicted by Fannie Elizabeth STERNBERGER.' LAST SUNDAY--week,young Martin HOPKINS,only son of Mr.John HOPKINS,was killed near his home in Osceola,Ark.,by a horse he was riding stumbling and falling on him.The young man was born and reared in this county and was a grandson of Esq.HOPKINS of the eighth district. J.HARDY COBB got his right arm caught in some machinery last Saturday and his hand and arm were so badly mangled before the machinery could be stopped that his arm had to be amputated near the shoulder. On Sunday about 11 a.m.BOB DIXON,colored,shot and seriously wounded DAVE SMITH,colored.The shooting occurred in front of M.BARR's tailor shop and was the result of SMITH's assault on DIXON earlier in the day with a knife.Cause of trouble,a crap game.SMITH was shot twice in the back. MR.T.H.COFFEE--son of Mr.Thomas D.COFFEE of the first district of this county died of typhoid fever at Whiteville Tuesday.He was buried at Harmony Wednesday at 2 p.m.At the time of his death he was engaged in a general merchandise business at Whiteville.The deceased was about 27 years old.A young wife of only nine months survives him. LOCAL NEWS--Ben BRILEY,Ben DAVIS and Isaiah HENLEY convicted and sentenced to the peniteniary at the last term of the circuit court for ten years each,were conveyed to Nashville Monday. Mrs.J.V.McCLISH,who has been quite ill for several weeks has been taken to the Infirmary at Memphis. A very meager report has been circulated here concerning the killing of ALGIE WOOF,a negro,between Toulon and Woodville the latter part of last week.There has been much difficulty in apprehending the guilty in the tragedy as all of the wtinesses are negroes and sympathize with the murderers.A negro named DAN CONNER was arrested and gave states evidence in the case implicating HARLAN ADAMS, ALF CAMPBELL,NUGIE ALLEN and JNO.THOMPSON in the crime.HARDEN ADAMS has been arrested and place in jail. LOCAL NEWS--MRS.LOU TAYLOR,wife of Rev.R.V.TAYLOR,died at her home at Taylor's Chapel in Fayette County Tuesday at 6 p.m. Mrs.R.J.SIMPSON and her mother,Mrs.O'CALAHAN have removed to Memphis.Mrs.SIMPSON's home on College street is now occupied by Mr.JAMES LIVINGSTON and family. The residence of old aunt WILLIE BARCLAY,colored,situated about 1 1/2 miles south of town,burned to the ground about 5 a.m.yesterday.The old woman thinks it was the work of an incendiary.Most of the furniture was saved. Mr.GEORGE ALLEN KINNEY's residence in South Brownsville was destroyed by fire Tuesday afternoon.He carried $1,000 insurance on the house,but npthing on his furniture,most of which was saved,but greatly damaged.His loss is estimated at $1500. Major R.Y.LONGLEY,one of the pioneer citizens of Brownsville,is dead at Marianna,Ark.He was engaged in the dry goods business at Brownsville during the civil war and has many relatives and friends here who will be pained to hear of his death. Miss Ophelia KELSO,daughter of Richard KELSO,who lives a few miles north of town,died Friday and was buried Saturday.Miss KELSO was quite a pretty girl and had just reached young ladyhood being about 18 years old.Whiteville News. MRS.WILLIE CULBREATH--wife of Dr.Lewis CULBREATH,of Stanton,died in that place last Wednesday evening of typhoid fever.Deceased was a granddaughter of Mr.W.W.WILKERSON of the 2nd District and a neice of B.L.CAPELL,of this place.She had married only last June,was a young woman of most excellant christian character. John D.EVANS,a well-to-do farmer living five miles north of town,died Sunday and was buried at Salem Monday. LOCAL NEWS--WILL HARRIS died at his home in Alamo Monday evening,aged about 30 years.He was the editor of the Alamo Signal.He leaves a wife and one child. We regret to learn of the serious illness of Mr.John P.GAUSE at his home in Ripley.He is afflicted with blood poison caused by a small scratch on his hand. Mr.W.W.DUPREE has moved back to his residence in Brownsville.He has sold the old home place on the Hatchie River to Mr.Joseph ARMSTRONG of Gallatin,Tenn. JIM HILL was brought here from Covington Sunday and placed in jail to await trial at the January term of court on a change of venue from Tipton County.HILL was convicted on a charge of murdering his wife and sentenced to be hanged.The supreme court granted him a new hearing. CATALPA--Death has visited our community and taken from our midst another ex-Confederate soldier.Thus,one by one,they are passing away.R.N.WILLIAMS,comrad,friend and neighbor,who was born January 26,1835,died November 22,1904 at 8:30 p.m.He was a member of Company F,31st Tennessee Regiment; made a true and faithful soldier; was a member of the Missionary Baptist Church and lived a true and faithful Christian till death.He had been partially paralyzed for several years and almost as helpless as a child.The family have our sincere sympathy.His brother,Marvin,deserves credit for his kind attention. LOCAL NEWS--H.A.RAINEY has been confined to his room for several days suffering from rheumatism. E.W.WILLS and those of his family who have been quite sick are improving. MR.J.R.WILSON,one of the oldest and best esteemed citizens of Brownsville,died Wednesday morning,November 30th at the residence of his son-in-law,aged 74 years.Funeral services were heard Thursday at 10 o'clock,Rev.H.B.JOHNSTON officiating.Interment in Oakwood Cemetery.His beloved wife preceeded him to the grave just six days.The passing of this aged couple,without a mumur,without a regret,is indeed a beautiful lesson. STANTON--Mr.T.A.BINFORD spent Thanksgiving in Brownsville with his sister,Mrs.Ben MANN. Miss Susie Lee KERR and Mr.Fred SWEET were married Thursday evening at the home of the bride about three miles from this place. STANTON--Mrs.Mayme CLEAVES of Obion is visiting her sister,Mrs.David PHILLIPS. Mr.& Mrs.W.B.CLEVELAND,of Cleveland,Ohio came Thursday to spend the winter. Mr.& Mrs.J.W.DILL have returned from a visit to Woodville where they have been attending the bedside of Mr.DILL's father. BELLS--Mrs.James NOWELL died last Thursday near Alamo.The burial took place in the Alamo Cemetery. Mr.Will EVANS has moved his family to Humboldt and will make that city his future home. Mr.Mark COZART of District#1 died a few days ago. John HARRELL of Obion moved to Alamo last week. LOCAL NEWS--W.J.WHITEHEAD has bought the E.H.TAYLOR place on East Main street; consideration $2,500. Aunt Ann CURRIE,a respected and estimable colored woman,who had passed the century mark by 12 years,died at her home near the old fairgrounds last Monday.In the days of slavery,she was the property of the late W.T.CURRIE. Logan READ,colored laborer employed by the Brownsville Oil Mills,was the victim last Saturday of a bad accident.His left hand was so badly crushed that amputation was necessary. The McLAUGHLIN farm one mile northwest of town was sold Tuesday by NUNN & GRISSOM,attorneys for McLAUGHLIN to Mr.& Mrs.Jno.HALLIBURTON.Consideration; $25 per acre,about $4,000 in the aggregate.It is the old Fox REED place. Mr.Lunda VAUGHN,a worthy and industrious young man,recently employed at Covington's Mill is sick at his home with pneumonia.He is in destitute circumstances and needs the help of his friends.It is a proper case for the exercise of Christian charity. Two negroes,JESSE WISE and PETE COLE,living on the farm of Maj.J.M.SHAW,eight miles east of town,had a difficulty at a hog killing Tuesday,in which the former was struck and killed with a piece of scantling in the hands of the latter.COLE made his escape.WISE had been living with Maj.SHAW for more than twenty years and had frequently acted in the capacity of body servant to the major.He was held in high esteem by the white people of the neighborhood and his untimely and tragic death is deplored. Mr.W.A.BLACKWELL,formerly a citizen and merchant of Brownsville,died at his home in Dallas,Texas Sunday morning,November 27th.He will be remembered by many of the older people of Haywood and Lauderdale counties.He leaves a widow but no children.Mrs.BLACKWELL,nee Miss Lelia PEEPLES will make her home in the future with her brother,Mr.Chas.PEEPLES and neice,Miss Annie BISHOP. Last Thursday evening,a negro cabin on Green HUGHES farm,north of town was destroyed by fire and a four-year-old child which was left in the house burned to death. Mr.Fritz Nieman of St.Louis,formerly of Bells,died Monday and his remains were brought to Bells Tuesday and interred in Bellview Cemetery. NUT BUSH--The report came today that Mr.James KIRKESS exchanged shots with a negro,the negro it is said drew a pistol and insulted him and Mr.KIRKESS got his shotgun to defend himself and the negro who was in Mr.KIRKESS' barn lot,brandished his weapon and dared Mr.KIRKESS to come out,which he did,he shot at the negro and the negro shot at him twice. ********* VOL.38 NO.2 FRIDAY DECEMBER 23,1904 LOCAL NEWS--Mr.John NAILL bought the W.R.NEBLETT homestead at a trustee's sale Tuesday.Price paid; $2,500. We regret to record the death of Mr.H.M.HOUSTON an old and respected citizen of Woodville which occurred at the home of his daughter,Mrs.Albert WILEY on December 14th. Mrs.A.A.GAUSE died at the residence of her daughter,Mrs.Jennie E.WILKERSON,Tuesday night,in the 85th year of her age.Her death removes the last surviving representatives of the old heads of the GAUSE families who figured prominently in the early history of Haywood.She was born in Smithville,N.C.in 1820 and came with her husband the late Juluis L.GAUSE to West Tennessee about 65 years ago.Mrs.GAUSE was Miss Amelia GALLAWAY and she was a near relative of Bishop Chas.B.GALLAWAY of the M.E.Church,South.
