McFARLAND on Mission Ridge.This is the second charge of arson against her. FROM HILLSIDE--Mr. Ashley BRUCE and wife have been very ill with lagrippe.Also Mr.Charlie RICE. Misses Ethel and Mabel STUART spent the day with their brother,Carl,last Sunday. FROM SOUTH HATCHIE--Miss Lillie THOMAS has been very sick,but is up now. Mr.J.W. CHERRY has moved to his new home near Danceyville. LOCAL NEWS--Dr.G.M. SAVAGE,of Jackson,will preach at Zion Baptist Church,six miles east of Brownsville,the 3rd Sunday in April. Will AUSTIN,a negro driver at the race track,happened to a painful accident Tuesday.He was training a horse and jogging him on the track.The horse became unmanageable and kicked AUSTIN from the sulkey,inflicting injuries which will keep him in bed about two weeks. D.E. BURTON,of Memphis,who succeeded W.N. SCOTT as local managerof the Cumberland Telephone Co.,has arrived and assumed charge of the office.Mr.SCOTT was transfered to Winona,Miss. Rev.R.L. NORMAN has returned from Sharon,where for 8 days he has been at the bedside of his mother, Mrs.J.F. NORMAN.We regret very much to chronicle the fact that Mrs.NORMAN's illness was fatal,she died Tuesday and was buried at Sharon Wednesday,the burial being conducted by Rev.ALLEN,of McKenzie. W.P. JEFFRIES,former residents of Brownsville says "There was a large attendance and many beautiful floral tributes were sent.The services were conducted by Rev.Geo.P. POSTER,rector of St. John's Episcopal Church.The interment was at Greenwood.The singers were Misses Capitola FRANK and Lillian KEOWN.They sang "Looking This Way," "Rock of Ages,"and "Asleep In Jesus." at the residence and "Beautiful Isle Of Somewhere,"at the grave. THE STATES GRAPHIC VOLUME 40--NO.18 FRIDAY APRIL 10,1908 BROWNSVILLE,TENNESSEE LOCAL NEWS--Howell WILSON,negro porter for White,Knight and Crumpton,found their safe unlocked Saturday morning,and helped himself tp about $65.That night he started out to "blow himself," but was nabbed by Marshal RUSSELL and part of the money recovered.On account of his past reputation,and being a good workman,his firm declined to prosecute him,but Recorder fined him $10 for the city. Mayor Thomas J. KEY,the veteran editor of the Southern Agriculturist,of Nashville,died Sunday morning after an illness of only nine hours.He has been editor of the publication since the close of the civil war,in which conflict he commanded the famous KEY's battery in Gen.Pat CLEBURNE's brigrade. His first paper was published in Corinth,Miss.;later he moved to Louisville,then to Alabama,where he was assistant commissioner of agriculture under Gov.JOHNSON.About ten ears ago,he moved to Nashville with his paper,and resided there until his death.He was a frequent visitor to Brownsville,and was well known in this section. RICHARDSON. THE STATES GRAPHIC VOLUME 40--NO.20 FRIDAY APRIL 24,1908 BROWNSVILLE,TENNESSEE ADDITIONAL LOCALS--Mrs.Roxie MORRIS,wife of Joe N. MORRIS and daughter of Jas. DEZERN died at the county residence east of town yesterday morning.Her remains at Chestnut Grove cemetery yesterday afternoon,Rev.R.L.NORMAN conducting the services.She was a member of the Methodist church and was an active church worker.She is survived by her husband and two children. A few of our older people are critically ill and a large circle of friends and relatives are deeply concerned about them.Only a slight change for the better is reported in the condition of Esq.John J. MANN, who has been confined to his bed for several weeks.His health has been contending with a stubborn disease that has gradually exhausted his power of endurance. Mr.I.B. READ has grown worse this week,and is now in very critical condition.One day last week,he was able to be up town,but since then has grown worse each day, and his condition now is such as to excite the apprehension of his friends. Mrs.Parasade TAYLOR, mother of Mrs.J.A. WILDER ,and Robert JOHNSON and Messrs. Howell & Hull TAYLOR has been quite ill since receiving a severe fall sometime this winter.On account of her extreme age,being now in her 86th year,her recovery from the shock of this fall was hardly expected,but she has shown very remarkable power of vitality and still lingers among us. All of these aged sick ones are faithfully attended and as they linger near the shadows of the borderland,are receiving tne ministrations of loving and affectionate hands. LOCAL NEWS--Nathaniel,the 18-months-old son of Mr.& Mrs.A.J. RYAN,Died Sunday morning.The remains were taken to Hickman,Ky.,for interment. We feel it our duty to publicly thank Dr. Herman MORTON for the complete cure of our daughter,after months of intense suffering,while under treatment of one of Brownsville's best doctors.All questions cheerfully answered,Respectfully;Mr.& Mrs.L.B. SPREIGHT,an old Haywood county man,who learned his printing trade under George MATTHEWS,of The Brownsville States,was in town last week.Mr.SPREIGHT is now located in Shreveport,La.,and is publishing The Gulf States Farmer. John STUART,of this county,under work sentence and a $50 fine for carrying a pistol,has been pardoned by Gov. PATTERSON. STUART is a cripple and his family is in destitute circumstances.The pardon was recommended by many prominent officials and citixens. SOCIAL AND PERSONAL--Mr.T.R. TUCKER is remodling and adding to his pretty home on Kerr street. Mr.Phillip KERR has purchased the former gin lot and has in operation a grist mill. DEATH OF ISAAC H. READ--The death at his home in this city on April 25th at 4 o'clock of Isaac H. READ,at the age of 70 years,removes from the sphere of life one of the most prominent citizens and best men that our county ever knew.Since early manhood,he had been a leader to every movement looking to the welfare of this and Lauderdale County,where for several years,he lived.Of the influential and wealthy READ family,who emigrated to this county from Virginia in the early 30's,he was worthy of his ancestry and lived the life of useful industry and lofty ideal that he learned in childhood. In early life he married a Miss GREEN, a woman of great beauty,and they raised an extensive family of children,worthy of their parents and whose noble lives have been an honor to them.He was married three times and by the last union,he leaves four children,all minors,to mourn an untimely loss.In religion,Mr.READ was a Presbyterian,as had been his family for generations. At the outbreak of the war,he entered the Army as Lieut.of the 7th Tenn.Cav., and laid down his arms when no other cause was left.After the religious services conducted by Rev.C.O.N. MARTINDALE at the home,the remains were taken charge of by Hiram S. BRADFORD Bivouac, conveyed to Tabernacle church and laid to rest beside the loved ones who had gone before.The following comrades, some of whom served under him in battle,participated in the beautiful service; J.A. THE STATES GRAPHIC VOLUME 40--NO.22 FRIDAY MAY 8,1908 BROWNSVILLE,TENNESSEE THE PEWETT & DOUGLAS FAMILY MONUMENT--There was erected at Danceyville in the Baptist cemetery this week a monument to the PEWETT and DOUGLASS families. The monument was purchased by Mr.J.E. DOUGLASS,or in other words by Uncle Jack DOUGLASS,as he is more familiarly known and cost $2,000.The monument was purchased soon after the war,and until the past week had never been erected.It was made by Mr.CROWLEY when he was in business in Brownsville,and was put up this week by Ed.L. STEWART and is to the memory of the following members of the two families. William B. PEWETT; born Jan.2,1797, died Sept.4,1861. Frances A.,wife of Wm.B. PEWETT; died Aug.3,1849,aged 30 years,8 months. Mary E.,daughter of Wm.B. and F.A. PEWETT;born Jan.13,1845, died Nov.2,1866. Giddie R., son of Wm.B. and F.A. PEWETT; born Apr.22,1838,died at Academy Hospital,Chattanooga,Tenn.,July 9,1863.A member of the 9th Tennessee Regiment. Robert J.,son of Wm.B. and F.A. PEWETT,born Sept 2,1842. Sarah F.,wife of J.E. DOUGLASS,born Dec.16,1839, died July 5,1866. Lonen B.,son of J.E. and S.F. DOUGLASS; born March 25,1865, died Oct.1,1865. Rena F., daughter of J.E. and S.F. TENNESSEE NEWS--Jack HUNTER,one of the oldest citizens in Montgomery County,Died last week of infirmities incident to old age and effects of burns received in a fire about five years ago.At that time his home was destroyed by fire and his wife was burned to death.He was 88 years old. S.McCALL,aged 70, Died at his home near Paris.He was a most prominent and highly esteemed citizens.He was a brave Confederate soldier,and received a wound which crippled him for life.He was given a Southern Cross of Honor June 3,1903. FROM BELLS--Jim VANN,near Jackson,spent Sunday with his sister,Mrs.George GOOSEMAN. Thursday evening last,citizens of Bells were aroused by the fire alarm and found the residence of Arch OVERTON to be in flames,only a small portion of the furniture saved. LATEST ON THAW--Having proved the very eccentric Mr.THAW insane to clear him of a charge of murder,another set of attorneys have now been employed to prove him sane to get him out of the follish house.It is a sort of presto change-now you see it,now you don't. LOCAL NEWS--The residence on Cherry Street,occupied by H.L. CHANEY,a negro minister,was destroyed by fire Thursday night last.The house and contents were a total loss,no insurance. Alfred READ,(col),a former resident of this place,and son of John READ,a local plasterer,died in Washington D.C. May 3rd.His remains were brought here for burial,services being conducted by Elder T.J.SEARCY,of Memphis. SOCIAL AND PERSONAL--Miss Lillie Robertson HAMILTON and Edward Alston RICHARDSON were married at the First Presbyterian Church in Holly Springs,Miss.,Wednesday,April 29th at 7 p.m. There were nineteen in the bridal party; Ben L. CAPELL,Jr.,of Memphis was best man and Ed DUPREE of Brownsville was one of the attendents.Mr.& Mrs.RICHARDSON left for New Orleans and Vicksburg,and this week were guests of relatives leaving Wednesday for Holly Springs where Mr.RICHARDSON is owner of a drug store. Miss Dozier John SCOTT and Mr.William Fleming DAWSON,Jr.,were married at the Methodist Church at Humboldt Thursday evening,April 30th;Rev.E.S. Hon.R.A.WILLIAMS of Ripley,former member of the legislature and cashier of the Lauderdale County Bank Died Sunday. Judge Levi S. WOODS,of Jackson,Died at his home Wednesday.he had been on the bench 20 years ans was an accomplished jurist. Tom MULLINS,employed at the mill of the RANKIN Lumber Co.,located seven miles west of here on the railroad,was injured while at work Tuesday,and was brought here for medical aid. Emaline BRILEY,colored,was struck on the head with a brick bat Saturday night on Jefferson street,sustaining a very painful injury.The brick was thrown by a negro man,but so far the woman has not been able to give his name. F.M. FARRIS,of Somerville,sheriff of Fayette County,was here yesterday after a negro,Charlie HILL,who is wanted in Fayette county for felonioys assault.The negro had been caught by sheriff KING and was in jail awaiting the arrival of Sheriff FARRIS. Senator MONEY,of Mississippi,had his neck dislocated during the civil war and until a few days ago was ignorant of the fact.He has suffered with his neck for years and under examination of an osteopath,the discovery was made and the neck put back in place. Jno.Y. BARBEE,of Ripley,a former residence of Brownsville and well-known all over West Tennessee,is back from Baltimore where he has been under the treatment of an eminent specialist. AFTER A LONG AND LINGERING ILLNESS--Mr.Jack WALKER,a well known and very popular young man of our city,past to his reward last Thursday night,aged 32 years.The disease of which he died was consumption complicated with other ailments.He had just returned from Texas only a few weeks since, though no improvement in his condition took place while in that state.A man of upright character,real worth,and generous and noble impluses,he had many friends who feel in his demise the loss of a valuable friend and citizen.The funeral services were conducted at the home of his mother on Friday afternoon by Rev.C.O.N. THREE MEN MAY BE LYNCHED; DYERSBURG,TENNESSEE--In the event of the capture of three participants in two tradgies at this place today,a triple lynching may result.John PALMER,a white man, is being pursued by bloodhounds for stabbing his son,and two negro hold-up men are badly wanted for killing a harmless negro. If PALMER is captured it is probable that he will be summarily dealt with as the citizens of this county are very much wrought up over the attempt of the father to take his son's life. John ANDERSON,a "white man's negro," as he is familiarly known,was assaulted and shot five times.If his assailiants were captured,there may be a triple lynching here. NEWS OF THE WEEK--Harry THAW has overcome the objections of his attorneys and will take the stand and tell his story of the shooting of Stanford WHITE,when the rebuttal evidence is begun in his hearing. Newt CUNNINGHAM, son of Jasper CUNNINGHAM, residing near Ripley,was Killed by lightening in the thunderstorm Monday morning.He had a baby in his arms at the tims that was injured. The heavy wind Monday morning blew down the smoke stack at the compress,partially unroofed the livery stable at Smith & Neely,tore off the sky light of Stratton's grocery store and trimmed off a number of trees. W.M. PATTON,a native of Haywood County at one time,a resident of Brownsville,and a brother of Dr.J.S. PATTON,of this city,Died at his home in Cabot,Ark.,last Sunday.He was 73 years of age and quite wealthy. On Sunday,May 31,Olive Camp 28,W.O.W. will go to Paris,Tenn.,to unveil the monument of Sov.Rev.T.J. NEWELL.The L & N has granted them a special train for the occasion,with a cheap rate of $1 for adults and .50 cents for children for a round trip.The train leaves Brownsville at 10 a.m. The Daughters of the Confederacy have purchased from Mr.W.T. BULILIFIN for $800.a lot just west of the Peoples Bank,which will be made into a Confederate Park. Vernon MANN,son of the late John J. MANN,announces in this issue as a candidate for city magristrate to succeed his father. MR.JOHN J. MANN--died at his home in this city on Friday evening of last week after a long and painful illness,which he bore uncomplainingly and with Christian fortitude.He was born in Virginia September 5th, 1843,son of Asa and Epps MANN and came to Haywood with his parents as a child,and was ever after a resident of Brownsville or its vicinity.In 1863,he married to Miss CONE of Stanton,and she with four children,survive him.Of an aminable and gentle disposition,he was the kindest of neighbors,a good citizen and had many friends to mourn his demise.He was an influtential member of the county court.The burial was in Oakwood Cemetery by Revs. HENDERSON and DUCKWORTH. These people are closely related to old-time Brownsville folks,the lady being the granddaughter of Shep M. ASHE,for several years circuit court clerk of Haywood County and the groom a grandson of J.W. ROGERS,a noted character of this town,and son of Harris ROGERS,celebrated electrician and a native of Brownsville. Mr.S.S. THOMAS,a well known and popular citizen of Brownsville,was married on Wednesday of last week to Mrs.Evalin HANNA,at Montgomery,Ala.Mrs.HANNA attended school here in her girlhood days, her home at that time being in Ky.Mr.& Mrs.Thomas arrived here last Friday and for the present are domiciled at the home of W.T. TAYLOR. Miss Lucille NETTLE visited her sister,Mrs.H.L. CURLIN,at Hanley last week. Calvin DIXON,of near Trenton,was here Tuesday to attend the funeral of his nephew,Bryon DIXON,at Tibbs. Mrs.L.J. McGEE and son Maxie,returned this week from Bells,where Mrs. McGEE has been teaching music for the past year at the Bells High School. Joseph HEARD,who last week graduated from Well School at BellBuckle returned home this week. THAW's extreme nervousness and his poor showing on the witness stand last Saturday night at the close of the habeas corpus proceedings at Poughkeepsie,were due it is said,to large consumption of large quantities of scotch whiskey,smuggled in to him while he was in Matteawan and since he has been in the Duchess county jail. FROM BELLS--The local union at Jones school can boast of having the oldest member in the county,Uncle Matthews WILLIAMS,who is 94 years old. The citizens of Fruitvale petitioned the L & N Railroad to build a depot at that place. Mr.Edgar GRIFFIN,of Columbia and Miss Isora VESTAL were united in marriage at the residence of Al VESTAL,East Bells,Wednesday evening. The many friends of J.C. REVELL will be sorry to learn that he was taken back to the asylum at Bolivar Saturday. A most deplorable accident happened one day last week in the Third District,when the 13-year-old son of N.C. BAILEY was caught in the line shaft of his father's cotton gin and fearfully bruised before the engine could be stopped.The boy DIED a few hours later.The remains were interred in the Cypress church graveyard. LOCAL NEWS-- Bryan DIXON,the two-year-old son of Mr.& Mrs.R.M. DIXON,of Tibbs,DIED Monday night after a brief illness.The interrment was in the Trinity cemetery Tuesday afternoon,Rev.Glibert DOBBS officiating. BORN to Mr.& Mrs.Clarence MANN,Tuesday morning,a bright little Miss. Veal,son of a weel known negro preacher,DIED at his father's home Saturday.The funeral took place Sunday at Salem church and was largely attended.JONES was 23 years of age,had spent several years at Lane college and was a good negro. Robert JOHNSON, who was convicted at the September 1906 term of Haywood county circuit court of violating the age of the consent law,and was sentenced to three years in the penitentiary,had his sentence commuted to 22 months.The recommendation was made afrer a petition signed by the prosecutor,the girl's father and a number of officials and citizens had been received,setting out,it is said,that the age of the girl was not stated at the trial. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
