JOSEPH A. LEE,the only negro member of the Taft notification committee,enjoys the distinction of being the only man of his race that ever was received as a guest at the Sinton Hotel. AS WALTER GOODWIN,who betrayed night rider secrets in Trigg County,Ky.,was returning home from a neighbor's house,he was fired on seven times by men lying in ambush.One bullett passed through his jaw and was extracted from under the ear.His condition is serious. LOCAL NEWS--BORN Monday night to Mr.& Mrs.G.B. WILLIAMS,a fine girl. SENATOR ALBERT WEBER, of Hickory Wythe,who represented Haywood and Fayette Counties in the last state senate,DIED at his home Wednesday night,aged 68 years.He was a prominent citizen of Fayette County. MRS. C.W. WHITTEN,aged 75 years,DIED August 4th at her home near Carolina,and was buried at Lebanon on the 5th.She was the mother of Messrs.Billy and Hampton WHITTEN. MINOR CURRIE,a ginger cake negro,stole a mule and a buggy Friday night from a negro tenant on O.G. BOMER's place about ten miles from town and succeeded in making his escape with the property.Sheriff KING received notice Tuesday that the negro was under arrest in New Albany.He left immediately and returned last night with the prisoner.The negro had traded the mule for a mare. THE LITTLE DAUGHTER of Mr. & Mrs.Curtis PATRICK,of Paris,Was bitten by a pet dog several days ago,while Mrs.PATRICK and her children were here,guests of Capt.& Mrs.W.M. SCOTT.While it was not known that the dog had rabies,as a matter of precaution,Mrs.PATRICK took her child immediately to Pasteur Institute,New Orleans for treatment. EVERYONE WHO KNOWS the good and worthy man,will regret to hear that Mr.Tom HARALSON suffered a stroke of paralysis on Tuesday morning at 9 o'clock.The stroke affected the entire right side and as he had when as a boy lost his left arm below the elbow,renders him rearly helpless.While in bad condition,his friends hope his life will be spared and that he may ultimately recover. MRS.SAM BOND,aged 74 years,DIED of apoplexy at the home of her son-in-law, Mr.Charles G. SMITH,near Tibbs,on July 31st,and was buried at the Forked Deer Cemetery the following day.Funeral services were conducted by Rev.Mr.LONG.She had for more than forty years been a resident of Haywood county and was extensively known and had a wide circle of friends.She leaves two children;Mrs.Charles G. SMITH,of Tibbs and Mr.Charles BOND,of Miss.,who mourn the loss of a faithful and devoted parent. THE MANY FRIENDS scattered all over West Tennessee,as well as the entire South,will learn with deep regret of the serious illness of Mr. Duke MACON,formerly a noted printer and newspaper man,at his home near Rudolph,in this county.For some time Mr.MACON has been in a low stage of health,which culminated on Thursday last in a paralytic stroke,one side of the body being affected. THE MANY AND SINCERE friends of Mrs.Dora Moore RUSSELL,will learn with deep sorrow of her DEATH at the Presbyterian hospital in Memphis,August 3rd,after an illness of several weeks of typhoid fever, aged 20 years and four months.He remains arrived here on the 3 o'clock train from Memphis Wednesday and were conveyed to the Baptist church,where a large concourse of sorrowing friends listened to the impressive funeral service delivered by Rev.Gilbert DOBBS,after which the remains were interred in Oakwood cemetery.For several years Miss Dora MOORE was one of Felsenthal's most popular clerks,and was engaged as such when she married about two years ago. GROVE,one of the brainey and high-toned gentlemen of pioneer Brownsville. ************************************* THE STATES GRAPHIC VOLUME 40 NO.36 BROWNSVILLE,TENNESSEE FRIDAY AUGUST 14,1908 NEWS OF THE WEEK--NEGROES AND UNITED STATES SAILORS from the St.Helena training station have furnished a parallel to the Brownsville affair which is stirring the military of Norfolk,Va. Negroes fired upon the sailors during a raid and the enlisted men,who are said to have been armed,attempted to lynch three of the blacks.Only the prompt arrival of the police saved the negroes from death. MRS.EMILY WOOD,wife of Dr.Oran Alphonso WOOD, a physician of Magnolia,N.J.,who disappeared from her home a few weeks ago,has been found and arrested in a house occupied by negroes at 2002 Ellsworth street,Philadelphia.With her was Bernard SMITH,a negro chauffeur of Dr. WOOD,who disappeared with her.The police charged her with having eloped with SMITH. WELL does the life of Dora MOORE RUSSELL illustrate and prove the truth of these words.From May 4th,1879 when she come to gladden the home of her parents in Brownsville,Tennessee,to August 3rd,1908,when God called her from her home in Memphis,Tennessee,up to the mansions above,is not a long time;chronologically speaking,but counted by the noble deeds of her life spanned these it is a long time indeed.From early childhood Dora was a positive character.Her consecrated mother saw when she was very young that the energy and determination of the child were more than mere human skill could manage.So she placed her in God' hand and asked Him to direct these qualities for good and make them a blessing to the world. She saw that prayer answered in a beautiful life of strong faith and love untiring service and perfrct obediance to God's will.She was converted and joined the Baptist church at the age of 13 years.She graduated Brownsville High School 1897 and also from Brownsville Female college 1899 with high honors.Shw was happily married to E.C. RUSSELL June 26th,1906 and their home in Memphis sweet and beautiful. About five weeks ago,she was stricken with typhoid fever,from which she never recovered.She always wanted her sister,Nan,near her.They were almost twin sisters and their love and devotion for each other were perfect She told her mother," if God calls me home,I want to be buried in my bridal dress." LOCAL NEWS--MR.ALEXANDER HOFSON,aged 59 years ,an old citizen of Curve,uncle of Mrs.J.W.BYRN, Died at his residence on Sunday after a long illness from complications of diseases.He was a prominent man in the community and an ex- Confederate soldier. DR.J.T. IRION,one of the most prominent citizens of Paris,and several years editor of the Paris Post Intelligencer,Died Sunday morning.His death was caused by a bullet wound received in the battle at Perryville during the civil war.He was prominent as a physician,churchman and Mason. SOCIAL & PERSONAL--MRS.JAMES BOND was at home to her friends last Thursday evening complimentary to her sister,Miss Gladys ANDERHOLT of Friar's Point,Miss. O'NEILL & Dan BOMER entertained with a delightful porch party at their home Wednesday evening in honor of their cousind,Misses Lottie and Cherry BOMER,of Vicksburg. Miss LOUISE FLEMING entertained with an outdoor party last Saturday in honor of her cousin,Miss Jesse NUNN of Alamo. She leaves a husband and four children.The burial took place at the Goode Cem. MRS. MARY CASEY died very suddenly Saturday.Her remains were buried in the Alamo cemetery. ELBERT REAMS and family,who have been visiting relatives here,have returned to their home at Rosedile,Miss. NEWS OF THE WEEK--GEN.DAVID K. WARDELL died in his quarantine cabin at Tombstone, having given up life to be with the leper wife he abducted from a Los Angeles hospital,and with whom he tried to reach Mexico. He had been unconscious,except at intervals,for 24 hours.In his last lucid moments Gen.WADDELL begged his attendants to put forth every effort to have his wife tenderly cared for. INCENSED at the murder of a negro woman by her husband,John HARRIS,of Memphis,Tenn.,a mob of negroes gathered about HARRIS' house and attempted to lynch him.HARRIS took to his heels.Several shots were fired at him,but none took effect,he escaped. LOCAL NEWS--MR.& MRS.HUDSON HENDREN,of Stanton,are the proud parents of a fine baby girl. THE MANY FRIENDS of Mrs.J.E. CHAPMAN will be delighted to hear that she is convalsing from her recent critical illness. THE MANY FRIENDS here and elsewhere of Mr.Harvey CRITTENDEN and family of the Huntersville neighborhood,will deeply sympathize with him in the death last Monday of his 16-year-old daughter,Ruth,and the critical illness of another daughter,Miss Mary Sue,aged 18 years. MRS.CAROLINE F. COZORT died at her home on East Main Street,August 17th in her 78th year,and the remains were interred at Marvin's Chapel on Tuesday morning,Rev.R.L. NORMAN conducting the services.Most of the long and useful life of this woman was spent in this vicinity.She was the mother of a large family,all honest worthy people,and a credit to their parentage. AL E. BUCK,well known here for many years,died at the residence of his son,S.S. BUCK in Vicksburg,Miss.,on the 9th and on the following Tuesday,the remains were interred at the cemetery in Quincy,Crockett County,where many of his family are buried,and in which vicinity the greater part of his life was spent.He was the last of the three BUCK brothers,pioneer Brownsville merchants,Church and Plea having long since died and he was about 80 years old. His first wife was Miss SHAW,who died many years ago. He married the second time,Mrs.Annie Grove JOHNSON,of Brownsville,who died about five years since. Mr.BUCK was a merchant here in the 1880's.At the time of his death he was a member in good standing of Ed Worsham Lodge No.505 F.& A.M.,also of Brownsville Lodge No.29,W.O.W. and insured in that order for $2000.00. SOCIAL & PERSONAL--LITTLE MISS MARIE KINNEY celebrated her ninth birthday Tuesday afternoon and invited twenty-five of her little girlfriends. MISS ELIZABETH RIDDICK entertained forty of her young friends with a lawn party at her home on LaFayette street. MONDAY was Mrs.Jeannette ANKER's birthday,and in the evening a large number of her friends went around and surprised her and assisted in the celebration. J.H. Mr.& Mrs.N.W.BARTON. CONWAY,ARKANSAS--Wm.R. JAMES,aged 88,and Mrs.Edna P. JONES,aged 50,were married at a protracted meeting near here to-day. NEWS OF THE WEEK--WALKER DUNCAN,of Shelby County,Ky.,who killed Newton HAZLETT,an alleged night rider several weeks ago,received a letter from Gov.WILLSON announcing that he would grant him a pardon for killing HAZLETT,if he preferred this to vindication in court.The government said he had looked into the circumstances and was satisfied DUNCAN acted in defense of his home. IGNORANT that the husband,who braved leprosy for her sake,is dead of cancer.Mrs.Isabelle WARDWELL,wife of the late Gen.David C. WARDWELL,is raving in the the contagious ward of the county hospital at Los Angeles,Calif.,crying piteously for him.(surname spelled different in last issue.) WITHIN the past sixty days,twenty-five negroes have been lynched in different parts of the United States for alleged assaults on white women. ON A CHARGE of ambushing and shooting their cousin,R.L. CRADDOCK, Ladd COLLINSWORTH,a lawyer of Humboldt,Tenn.,and his brother, Frank COLLINSWORTH,have been arrested.The arrest was made following the trailing of blood to the home of Frank COLLINSWORTH. LOCAL NEWS--MR.GILBRIG KENDIL, aged 72 years, died near Rudolph on Monday and was buried at Zion on Tuesday.He formerly lived at Forked Deer. J.W. McCLEISH Jr leaves Tuesday for San Angelo,TX, where he will reside in the future.This fall he will engage in the cotton classing business. CHRLES T. MOORE, an old Brownsville boy who has been located in Memphis for several years,has accepted a position as general manager of the chain of grocery stores Mr.BOWERS is opening in New Orleans. MRS.HARRIS EVANS died at her home near Ged on the 24th and was buried at Lebanon on the following day. She was 45 yrs. old,and from childhood a member of the Methodist church.Rev.R.L. NORMAN conducted the funeral services.She was a daughter of Wesley DAVIS,an old resident of the county,and was widely known and very popular.Her walk in life was marked by all the womanly virtures and her demise ia a distinct loss to the community. RYAN WILLIAMS,the 2-month-old child of Mr.& Mrs.N.W. BARTON died at the residence of Mrs.BARTON's father,John RYAN,last Monday. Their many friends sympathise with them in their sorrow. SAM M. TAYLOR,who has for the past year been connected with the Covington Record has severed that connection and will this week take charge of the Marianna (Ark) Index. THE MANY FRIENDS here and over the entire south of Maj.Marcus V. CRUMP will regret to learn that he is in the hospital at Vicksburg,has been very sick,but is better now. MRS.J.W. KIRKPATRICK died at her home in Ripley Monday night after a brief illness.She is survived by two sons and four brothers.As a girl and young lady in the old days,she was a frequent visitor in Brownsville. THE FRIENDS OF Mr.& Mrs.G.A. ANTHONY,of the Durhamville neighborhood will learn with sorrow of the death of their son,Pickett,aged 18 years which occurred on Monday last at their home.About a year since he developed tuberculosis and in the course of the illness all that science and devoted attention could give failed to render relief.He was a splendid youth and gave promise of a life full of worth and usefulness and leaves a memory which will always be a consolation to his loved ones. SHERIFF HENDERSON and several deputies,of Crockett county,arrived in Brownsville Wednesday afternoon with four negroes charged with murdering a white man named BOWERS,and wounding three other white men.The trouble occurred at a negro festival about four miles from Bells Monday night.The presence of four white men led to a difficulty with the negroes and guns were brought into play with the above result.The negroes were captured Tuesday,and taken to jail at Alamo.The sheriff got wind of a mob Tuesday afternoon,so he and his deputies took the negroes from the jail and laid out in the woods with them until Wednesday morning when he brought them to Brownsville and turned them over to Sheriff KING,who took them to Memphis for safe keeping. A JAMBOREE among some of the negro workers at the canning factory Tuesday created a great deal of excitment for a short time.The parties involved were John KING,wife and sister-in-law;John BOND Sr & John BOND Jr. The junior BOND slapped KING's sister-in-law.She slashed him with a knife with which she was peeling tomatoes.KING's wife and the senior BOND took a hand in the affair.The senior BOND ran to his coat,got his pistol and fired at KING's sister-in-law,but struck a young negro girl in the hand.He then turned on KING and fired twice at him as the latter was running out of the room.The whole crowd was arrested and taken before Recorder MANN.The younger BOND was fined $10 and the elder BOND $50 and put under $1500.00 bond for his appearance at circuit court on the charge of assault with intent to kill. SMITH. ******************************************* THE STATES GRAPHIC VOLUME 40 NO 39 BROWNSVILLE, TENNESSEE FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 4,1908 PADUCAH,KY--THE DEMOCRATIC committee of the Third judicial district to-day refused to call a primary for November 3rd,to nominate candidates for commonwealth's attorney and circuit judge.It was argued that if the primary were called so early the night riders would control the primary election.The election does not take place until November 19th. LOCAL NEWS--REV.W.G. HEFLEY was called to Humboldt yesterday to officiate at the funeral of Mr.Bob CRADDOCK,who died yesterday morning from the effects of gunshot wounds inflicted several weeks ago by unknown parties. CALVIN JONES,for nearly fourteen years cook at the Pythian hotel,died Tuesday morning after a long illness during which he was tenderly looked after and all his wants supplied by the family he had served so long and so well.Always polite and amiable,he had rendered himself nearly invaluable,and the hotel people will deeply regret his passing.Calvin was raised in this community. WATKINS,has returned to his home in Seymour,Texas. ********************************************* THE STATES GRAPHIC VOLUME 40 NO 40 BROWNSVILLE,TENNESSEE FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 11,1908 NEWS OF THE WEEK;PADUCAH,KY--It is reliably reported that Henry BENNETT,of Dyeusbury,Crittenden county,who was a victim of the night riders several months ago,will bring suit against his assailants in the Federal court here for damages.He was given an unmerciful whipping and recently stated he had been financially ruined. His life has been threatened lately,but a body guard of state soldiers prevents the riders from carrying out their threat. BENNETT was formerly a tobacco buyer and prosperous farmer in this county. JOHN EARLY,the leper,has been officially exiled from his home state.The attorney general of North Carolina has rendered an opinion that the state is not called upon to care for its citizens outside its jurisdiction,and that EARLY, as a discharged soldier,should be cared for by the federal government.The embargo extends also to Mrs.EARLY. LOCAL & PERSONAL--LITTLE HOUSTON COZART was three years old Thursday,and his grandmother, Mrs.E.A. BARCROFT,gave him a party in honor of the event. MISS OCTAVIA TAYLOR is visiting the family of her brother,Lewis TAYLOR in Chanute,Kansas. A.A. BURLISON,of Blytheville,Ark.,was here this week visiting his parents, Mr.& Mrs.D.A. LANGWELL dismissed every colored student and announced that no more would be admitted. LOCAL NEWS--A Horrible accident occurred in Ripley on Wednesday morning last by which Alexander YOUNG,a prominent young business man of that town,lost his life. He was on a flat car,superintending the unloading of gravel,when a freight train bumped the car,hurling him between the cars,and the upper part of his body was mangled beyond recognition.He was a son of the late Dr. A.H. YOUNG,who preceded him to the grave by just three months. SOCIAL AND PERSONAL--J.W. and W.C. PENNELL,of Memphis,spent Sunday with their cousin,W.W. DUPREE. DR.A.B. YOUNG was called to Halls Monday on account of the serious illness of his father,Hon.J.F. YOUNG. ALBERT THOMAS has been very sick at the home of his father,Mr.S.F. THOMAS,for several days last with malarial fever. THE numerous friends of Mrs.C.S. WALKER will learn with regret of her illness at her home in Tulsa,Okla.Her mother,Mrs.S.F. MOORE and Misses Annebel and Mary MOORE have returned from a visit to the mountains and springs of North Carolina and Virginia,and to their cousin,Dr.James ESTES,Byrdville,Va. ******************************************* THE STATES GRAPHIC VOLUME 40 NO 42 BROWNSVILLE,TENNESSEE FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 25,1908 NIGHT RIDERS SECRETS;CLARKSVILLE,TENNESSEE--The alleged night riders'conspiracy,with all it's secrets, signs,signels,passwords,etc.,was laid bare here today for the first time when four confessed night riders from Marshall, Caldwell, and Galloway Counties Kentucky were put on the stand by the defense in the Gardner HUNT trial.The jury was not allowed to hear the testimony and the defense only introduced it in order to complete the record.The connection with the case was made with several of the night riders stated that Gen.AMOS,the head of the night rider clan,now said to be in hiding,had received information of the killing the afternoon after it occurred and that he commucated to several lodges the fact that one of the brothers had been killed and several wounded.Plans to raid Clarksville fell through.Sanford HALL gave the night riders oath. I furthermore swear and promise that I will never reveal or cause to be revealed,by word or act,to any persons,and of the transactions of this order,in lodge or out of lodge room,etc. LOCAL NEWS--JAMES KINNEY, who had been representing Benedict,Warren and Davidson,of Memphis as manager of their sales force,has resigned his position and accepted one as traveling salesman for Belknap Hardware Co.of Louisville. NINA,the little three-year-old daughter of Mr.& Mrs. R.W. COX,was bitten on the ankle by a poisonous snake of the rattlesnake varity.The little giel was quite sick for several days,but has almost recovered. SAM LEIGH,probably the oldest man,white or black,in Haywood County died at T.H. WHITEHEAD's place,east of town Saturday afternoon.Sam was 105 years old,and until the past year was active.He was a native of this county and had some Indian blood in him. THE MANY FRIENDS that were made by Miss Annie SYMONS,of Jackson,who visited Miss Amelia Scott WAGNER in July,will be shocked to learn of her death,which occurred on the 16th of this month,of typhoid fever.She was only 18 years of age. LOCAL NEWS--THE COMMUNITY was inexpressibly shocked and grieved Sunday morning to learn of the tragic death of Harry A. WHITEHEAD in Memphis Saturday night.He was on his way to his boardinghouse at about 11 p.m.when he was shot and killed by an unknown assasain.No clue to the murderer or purpose for the commission of the act has been discovered by the police.He was 26 years of age,a son of Mr.& Mrs.W.J. WHITEHEAD.He has for the past six years been a resident of Memphis,and was employed by the Zeliner Shoe Co. His remains were brought to Brownsville,and after funeral services conducted by Rev.H.G. HENDERSON, at the family residence,the remains were interred in Oakwood Cemetery. ALEXANDER A. JOHNSON,for many years one of the most prominent men in the west end of Haywood County,died at his home near Nut Bush on Friday,aged about 66 years.A native of this county,he enlisted in 1861 in the Haywood Rangers,Co.D,Seventh Tennessee Calvary,and served gallantly to the end of the war.when he had risen to the rank of lieutenant in his company. Returningto his home,he went earnestly to work as a farmer ,and by the practice of industry and frugality soon laid the foundation for a substantial living,and reared a first rate family in the way they should go.Interment was at Trinity church on Saturday,under the auspices of Hiram O.
