Callie SHAW,a negro woman confined to the county jail charged with feloniously assaulting another negro in the 11th District several months since,died Monday night of pneumonia. Miss Kate McFARLAND,who for several years taught a Presbyterian School here in the late 80's and early 90's died at thr residence of her brother,Hon.Baxter McFARLAND in Aberdeen,Miss.,on January 29th.Her many friends here remember her as an accomplished and elegant lady and will learn wieh sorrow her demise. A telegram to Mrs R.Y.MOSES Wednesday announced the sydden death of her neice,Mrs.W.D.PETERSON of Jonesboro,Ark. Mrs.PETERSON,as Miss Anna TALL was well known here,having attended the B.F.C.,and often visited here since her marriage. Wednesday's Commercial Appeal contained the following sad news,"Capt.Wm.M.FORREST,lies dangerously ill at the home of his son,Nathan Bedford FORREST, 187 Adams Avenue,as a result of a recurrant stroke of paralysis,while attending the performance of "The Clansmen" at the Lyceum Theatre last night.The condition of Capt.FORREST is so critical as to raise the gravest doubts of his recovery. Mrs.OVERTON,wife of C.H.OVERTON,died at her home in the eastern part of the County,Monday. Saturday night at Bells,burglars broke into the stores of J.D.HILL, C.C.HENDERSON, and L.B.HARWELL & Sons and stole about $100 worth of goods. A residence in the 6th District owned by Miss Julie WHITELAW and occupied by the families of Jasper VADEN and Ed ESCUE,was destroyed by fire Thursday night,January 30th.Both families lost practicially everything with no insurance. City Marshal RUSSELL,assisted by Mr.John FRITON,arrested seven negroes who were shooting craps Sunday afternoon in a box car on a siding near Chester's Mill.The gamesters were railroad hands.They paid into the ciyt treasurer the sum of $6.50 each. Charlie LEWIS,of Wellwood,in the 4th District died Wednesday night in the 46th year of his age,a victim of consumption.He was buried at Chestnut Grove Thursday afternoon at 2 p.m.He was not married and is survived by a brother and a sister. Mr.H.E.BLACKWELL and family have moved to Brownsville and are occupying one of Mrs.C.G.CHAMBERS residence.It is understood that Mr.BLACKWELL will embark in the grocery business.He is a good man and we are glad he is to make this his home. Mr.& Mrs.A.G.HOWELL and son,Gregory,are visiting Mrs.HOWELL's parents,Mr.& Mrs.E.B.STEWART,in Whiteville.It is reported that "Dutch" will sell his father-in- law's cotton before he returns home,of which he has on hand about 300 bales. Mr.Simon J.TURNER,formerly a well known citizen of Covington,but lately of Bowling Green Ky.,has formed a co-partnership with Mr.Charles SHERMAN of Brownsville,and will engage in the dry goods business in the latter named town.Mr.TURNER,after visiting the west with the view of locating a business finally decided that West Tennessee was the section for business,and hence his final decision of location. (Covington Leader) Mr.Joe McMURRY,an old and respected citizen,died suddenly at his residence in the 6th District yesterday at 10 o'clock. Mr.Robert BAIN,a native of Scotland,but for many years a resident of the United States and for ten years,a resident of this county,died at his home in Brownsville on Monday,February 3rd,1908,at the ripe old age of 78 years,and was buried in Oakwood Cemetery on the following day.Rev.H.G.HENDERSON conducting the funeral and burial service.The deceased was not extensively known by many of our people,being of a retiring disposition,but by those who did know him,he was beloved and respected.He is survived by his widow,one son,and two daughters.(post script) Sad to relate on Wednesday night at 11 o'clock,Mr.BAIN's Beloved wife,Clara,expired,aged 50 years,and her remains were laid to rest beside those of her husband in Oakwood Cemetery yesterday afternoon,Rev,H.G.HENDERSON conducting the burial services. Mr.W.B.McCOLPIN,after ten days illness of pneumonia,died at his home in Gates Wednesday afternoon,and his remains were laid to rest at Woodville yesterday.Deceased had reached the ripe age of 74 years,was born in Williamson County,TN, but moved to Haywood County when a young man.He was married to Miss Paralee TOMILSON in 1867,and is survived by one son,Mr.J.M.McCOLPIN of Gates and two daughters, Mrs.W.T.PERRY of Woodville and Mrs.Charles JOHNSON of Memphis.In early life he professed religion and joined the Methodist Church and was indeed a pillar in Methodism.He was a prominent member in the Masonic Fraternity.( RIPLEY ENTERPRISE) Mr.Newton CURRIE died at his home four miles south of Brownsville on Saturday,February 1st,1908 at 7 p.m.,in the 72nd year of his age,after a lingering illness caused by a stroke of paralysis received seven years since,which in one day changed him from a robust and hearty man to a helpless invalid.Our county,rich in good people as it has ever been,produced no better man than Newton CURRIE,whatever relation of life we take him in, and his loss to the community will be long and severly felt. Born of good Scotch-Irish stock of NC,he came with his parents to this county in boyhood and ever after made his home here.In 1861,he entered the Confederate Army as second Lieut.of Co.A.in the 6th Tenn.,infantry,serving the entire period,served with honor and gallantry,and at the surrender being 1st.Lt.After the war,he married Miss Mallie TALLEY and settled at the home in which he died,raising to maturity a family of ten children,eight of whom survive.In early life he united with the Presbyterian Church,in which he had been reared,became years since and official of that body ,and in its fold beloved and honored by the entire membership,full of faith in its every promise,he passed to the reward of the good and the just.Revs.MARTINDALE & WALLACE conducted the religious ceremony at the church Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock,and the Hiram S.Bradford Bivouac U.C.V.conducted the service at the grave,Marshall R.F.JOHNSON reading the ritual. ---FROM SOUTH HATCHIE---Miss Alma WILLIAMS is expected to begin her school at Asbury soon. Miss Alie McCOOL is visiting her sister,Mrs.CHAUNCEY at Brunswick. Mrs.Joe WILKERSON has returned to her home in St.Louis after spending several weeks with her father,J.S.MARTIN. We are sorry to report that Mrs.T.A.LYLE is very ill with la grippe. Miss Oren NEBLETT entertained Mr.& Mrs.D.C.HENNING Tuesday evening,January 28th.Many of Mrs.HENNING's friends were present to congratulate her and wish her a long and happy wedded life. ---SOCIAL AND PERSONAL---Miss Annie Sue ADAMS of South Hatchie is the guest of Mr.& Mrs.E.V.ADAMS. W.F. and Gordon PERRY,of Woodville,left Saturday night for El Paso,Texas.Mr.Gordon PERRY returned this week leavind his father there with Mrs.PERRY and daughter,Amy,who have been there some time. __________________________________________________________________________________ __ THE STATES GRAPHIC FRIDAY VOLUME 40 No.10 BROWNSVILLE,TENNESSEE FEBRUARY 14th,1908 __________________________________________________________________________________ __ ---LOCAL HAPPENINGS IN REIN---The community is mourning the loss of that sainted mother,Mrs.E.C.STURDIVANT,with this exception,there are no near deaths reported. ---LIVERYMAN RIGHTS; UNION CITY, FEB.,2nd---Circuit Court has adjourned after four weeks sessions.There was only one case out of the ordinary,that of the State against a travelling man,C.DUVALL.On the 10th of August,he had gone to the livery stable of GIBBS & Co.,and hired a horse and buggy,and on being asked by the proprietor where he was going,said he was going to Rives,some miles distant,and should be gone during the day.He drove to Rives,and then to Woodland Mills and from there to Jordon,Ky.,and back to Union City.when he returned it was evident that the horse had been driven hard,and it died in a few hours.Mr.Duvall gave the livery man his note for the horse and soon thereafter left and did not pay the note or return here until a few weeks ago.As soon as he reached town,the owner of the horse had him arrested and he was bound over to Court and was indicted.On the trial of his case in court,he was found guilty of violating the law with the reference to deceiving the proprietor of the livery stable at the time of hiring the horse and was fined $50 and costs,which he paid. ---DEATH OF AN OLD SOLDIER; BELLS.TN; 10th Feb.1908---Mr.R.G. PERMENTER,an old and popular ex-Confederate soldier,died at his home near Cypress Church,Saturday night,aged about 67 years.He was a member of the Joseph E.JOHNSON bivouac at Alamo.Interment took place Sunday at Cypress Church.He leaves his wife and several grandchildren. Mr.Jess LEWIS and family are down with the measles,hope they will be up soon. ---MEMPHIS,TENNESSEE---Capt.William M.FORREST,son of General Nathan Bedfort FORREST,the Confederate Cavalry leader,who was recently stricken with paralysis while witnessing a play has died. ---SOCIAL AND PERSONAL---Mrs.Sallie JEFFRIES has returned home after spending a week at Ged with her sister,Mrs.R.C.WILLIAMS,who has been quite sick but is now convalescent. Mr.& Mrs.I.L.GREENWALD,of Philadelphia,are guests of Mrs.GREENWALD's brother.Jos.STERNBERGER.Mr.GREENWALD is a native of Brownsville being the son of Mr.Nathan GREENWALD,a merchant in Brownsville before the war. ---LOCAL NEWS---Our young friend,P.O.WILKERSON,of Stanton,has bought the livery business of J.G.HAMLETT of Mason. Dick CARTER,of Memphis,is a guest of his brother,John E.CARTER,who we regret to say has been confined to his room for several days. Douglas COLE,the negro who,while in a shooting scrape with Jack MACLIN,another negro at Keeling,sometime ago,killed an innocent negro,was captured in Tipton County last week and brought to Brownsville Thursday last,by Deputy Sheriff Dulaney and turned over to Sheriff KING. C.H.FREEMAN sold to Mr.Ab COBB last week,a four year old mule for the neat sum of $205. J.D. MONTGOMERY offered the man $425 for a pair of mules but was turned down. The many friends of Mrs.James BATCHELOR will regret very much to know of her death at her home near Mercer February 6th.Mrs.BATCHELOR is survived by her husband;four sons, Abe, Emery, Claud, and Aubrey; and two daughter, Mrs.Leila BEATTY and Miss Ruth BATCHELOR. Minnie Lee,wife of J.A.ESCUE,of Forked Deer,aged 35 years,died December 21,1907.She was the daughter of Mr.& Mrs.T.D.STANLEY and was an active Christian and church worker.She is survived by six children;five boys and one girl,the girl only twelve days old at the time of her death. Mr.James A.HON died at his residence in the 6th District on Monday evening at 9o'clock in the 63rd year of his age,and was buried at Chestnut Grove Church the following day.Dr.H.P.HUDSON conducting the ceremony.He was an old citizen of Haywood County and leaves surviving an only sister,Mrs.M.E.CAMERON.He never married. Mr.J.A.McMURRAY died at the residence of his son-in-law.J.W.DAVIS,on Thursday,Feb.6th in the 87th year of his age,and was buried the following day at the Zion Church.Three daughters,Mesdames W.H.MORRIS, J.W.DAVIS, W.H.ROSE,;one sister,Mrs.Ab SHERMAN,;and two sons, George & Newt McMURRAY of Kansas survive.Deceased was a life long resident of Haywood County and for years a prominent member of the Primitive Baptist Church. James CLAREY,aged 77 years,died at the home of his daughter,Mrs.E.B.CHESTER,at an early hour Thursday morning.The deceased lived here only a short time but had many friends to mourn his death.Funeral services were held at 10:30 yesterday morning at the residence by Rev.KELTNER.The remains were taken to Chicago on the afternoon train for interment. Mrs.E.C.STURDEVANT,Sr.,died at the family residence in District #5 on Thursday evening,Feb.6th,in the 76th year of her age,after a lingering illness,in greater or less degree,suffering for years.Born in Brunswick Co.,VA,in 1832,in 1853 as Mary WHITE,she can to become the bride of E.C.STURDEVANT,and the next day left for their home in Danceyville,thence moving to Brownsville.She leaves her husband and three sons,Marcus, E.C.Jr.,and Franklin STURDEVANT. __________________________________________________________________________________ __ THE STATES GRAPHICS FRIDAY VOLUME 40 No.11 BROWNSVILLE,TENNESSEE FEBRUARY 14th,1908 __________________________________________________________________________________ __ ---EUREKATON NEWS---Miss Lucille WILLIAMS,of Spring Hill,visited Miss Ruby NELSON last week. The school is progressing nicely under Mesdames WHITE & COFFEY. There are about fifty pupils enrolled. Dr.J.R.NELSON,who has sick sometime with la grippe is rapidly improving. ---MRS.JAMES W.BATCHELOR---Died at her home in this county,February 6th,1908,Mrs.Katherine Adeline BATCHELOR. Deceared was born in Grenada,Miss., August 13th, 1842,and was married to Jas.W.BATCHELOR at the age of 17 years.Her husband and seven children ,five sons and two daughters survive her.Seldom has the community in which she lived been called upon to part with so noble and useful woman as Mrs.BATCHELOR.As one who knew her from his boyhood,I feel that I can truthfully say,she faithfully performed all life's duties.She had been a consistant member of the Woodland Baptist Church for 35 years.Being a Christian,she therefore loved all God's people.Her piety was of that deep unaffected and gentle character that impressed itself on all who knew her.She was universally beloved. When sickness and sorrow visited any household,some token of sympathy from her found its way thither.To the old,she was a gentle and patient presence;to the young,helpful; to the sufferer,she gave strenth; and among the poor and needy,she was full of good works and Alms deeds.She was modest and shrinking,but never forgot to do the thing becoming a Christian.She was a patient sufferer for more than twenty years,but the strong arm of God and loving care of husband and children supported her.'Twas in her home her many virtures shone brightest.Her unbounded hospility,well-spread table and happy homelife are familiar to all who visited there.Truly it could be said of her,"She lootheth well to the wages of her household,and eateth not the bread of idleness."A true wife and devouted mother,she leaves a monument more enduring than marble,for the lives through the lives of those noble sons and daughters she trained and loved.They "rise up and call her blessed;her husband also; yea,he praiseth her." "What's done is what remains, Ah,blessed they Who leave completed tasks of love today, And answer mutely For them being dead; Life was not purposeless, Through life be fled." W.W.BAIRD,who visited many points in West Tennessee attending to the duties of his office as Commissioner of Agriculture says the acreage of the cabbage crop for the coming spring will be much larger than last year.(Humboldt Courier) O.B.JOHNSTON,who has been connected with the Brownsville Gin this season,has purchased a drug store at Gadsden and left Tuesday to take charge of it. I have purchased JOHN,the big black Spanish Jack,better known as the JOHN MANN JACK. He will make the season at my barn,three miles southeast of Brownsville. Thomas D, RUSSELL. Died at residence,No.784 Dunlap Avenue,Thursday,February 13th,1908,at 1 o'clock p.m. Jossie BURROUGHS,aged 53 years,beloved wife of Theo.Perry,and mother of Emma B.,and Estes Perry and Mrs.W.J.McCARTY.Funeral services will be held at the residence this (Friday)morning at 11o'clock.(Memphis Commerical Appeal) Mr.John PERRY died at his home in the Second District,near Shepp,Tuesday,February 18th,1908,aged 50 years and his remains were interred in the Morton burying grounds the following day.The deceased was a highly respected citizen of the Trans Hatchie community and was a consisted member of the Baptist Church.His death was caused from a severe attack of la grippe. At the home of Mr.J.D.GREEN and wife,last Sunday,just after noon,a very interesting service was held--Little John Finnell GREEN,at the age of six months to the day,being baptized,by sprinkling with water brought direct from the River Jordon in Palestine,by Rev.C.O.N.MARTINDALE. He is probably the first chils in the section to enjoy such a distinction. Mr.S.D.WITT died at his home in this city Tuesday evening,the 18th,at 5:45 p.m.,aged 68 years,after a lingering illness.He was an old resident of Brownsville,coming here many years since from Obion County.Surviving him are widow;daughter; and grandson. Mr.J.H.HARALSON was called to Grenada,Miss.,Tuesday by a telephone message informing him of the serious illness of his daughter,Miss Bessie,who has been acting as secretary of the Grenada's Female College.Mr.HARALSON left at once for Grenada and brought Miss HARALSON to Memphis,where on the advice of her physician,she was placed in St.Joseph's hospital.(Humboldt Herald) Mr.Christopher A.KIRBY,aged 79 years,died at his home,two miles east of town Monday last,and was interred at the Kirby burying ground Tuesday afternoon.Rev.H.G.HENDERSON conducting the services.Mr.KIRBY was one of our oldest citizens and enjoyed a very extensive acquaintance,and this announcement will be sad news for many.He was identified with farming all his life,and through that occupation,acquired a competency.He leaves several sons and daughters. ---SOCIAL AND PERSONAL---Mrs.E.A.BARCROFT announces the approaching marriage of her daughter,Mamie,to Mr.Joseph Sneed LUTON.The marriage will take place at the residence Wednesday,February 26th. Rev.W.L.DRAKE and Miss Florence DURHAM were united in marriage Wednesday night at St.Paul's Methodist Church,Durhamville,TN.The bride is the daughter of A.M.DURHAM. W.P.JEFFRIES and Miss Ella COBB were united in marriage at the home of the bride in the 5th District at 2 p.m.,February 16th,Esq.R.G.HERRING officiating. Mr.& Mrs.L.L.PRINCE,of Knoxville,are visiting Mr.& Mrs.W.H.MULHERON. Crockett County has lost another of her influential citizens,Dr.R.W.FLEMING died at Alamo Friday night.He was 85 years of age,and was a well to do farmer.His burial took place at the Alamo Cemetery. Mr.Ammon RAINS died Saturday night at the home of his father,R.N.RAINS,near Fruitvale,aged 24 years.The interment took place Monday at the Rains graveyard.The funeral services were conducted by J.C.W.NUNN. ---FROM STANTON---Mrs.W.H.BASKERVILLE and guest,Miss Norah McDOWELL,of New York,are visiting in Memphis. Mr.& Mrs.Albert DANCY have moved from Danceyville to Stanton and will make this their home. ---LOCAL NEWS---Mrs.Kate BENNATT,mother of Mr.Howard BENNATT,who has been sick so long,is,we regret to say,no better,and her condition is very critical,with no hope of recovery. Dr.J.G.HAYWOOD's condition is much improved,and he was able to be out Saturday,yet he is very feeble,and his friends are apprehensive. A wreck on the L.& N. road at Brunswick delayed traffic several hours Thursday morning.The pay train coming out of Memphis ran into a freight train and caused great damage. E.J.BOMER,of Vicksburg,Miss.,and O.G.BOMER are here attending the bedside of their mother and father,who have very sick for ten days or more.Yesterday morning Mr.BOMER was reported better,but no improvement in his wife's condition. ---SOCIAL AND PERSONAL---At the residence of the bride's father,Mr.V.L.BLAIR, Sunday evening,February 23rd,Mr.William H. DUTTON and Miss Vannie BLAIR were united in marriage,Esq. E.B.BOREN officiating. At the residence of Mr.T.A.STAMPS in the 5th District on Saturday evening,February 22nd,Mr.Clarence BARNES and Miss Leila PIPKIN were united in marriage,Esq. E.B.BOREN officiating. Saturday afternoon,February 22nd,little Miss Elizabeth BOND was pleasantly surprised by a number of her schoolmates,the occasion being her 12th birthday. A lovely home wedding was consummated at the residence of Mrs.E.A.BARCROFT Wednesday afternoon at 5 o'clock,uniting Mrs.BARCROFT's daughter,Miss Maimie,and Mr.Jas.S.LUTON,in the holy bonds of matrimony.The house was decorated with ferns and in garlands of green and white,with a large white bell,under which the bride and groom stood.The first to enter the room was Will BARCROFT,brother of the bride,with John HARALson,followed by the bride and groom;the bride wearing white chiffon and veil and carrying a bouquet of brides roses.Mrs.Thos.W.HARALSON rendered the wedding march,and Rev.HENDERSON performed the ceremony in a very impressive manner.Misses Kate and Eula BARCROFT,Ethel SUMNERS and Maggie HARALSON,composed the reception committee.Mr.LUTON,who formerly lived here,is now a prominent young business man in Jonesboro,Ark.The happy couple left on the 6:30 train for their future home in that city. A wedding of much interest was that of Miss Martha Eilen,daughter of Mr.A.A.JOHNSON of Nut Bush,to Mr.Edwin Speed TAYLOR,which took place at Trinity Church at 5:30 in the afternoon of February 12th. A pre-nuptial reception was given to the bridal party consisting of the bride and groom;Miss Fannie JOHNSON,maid of honor; J.R.WALKER, best man; O.B.JOHNSON, Drs.MULHERRON and POSTON; and L.N.TAYLOR, ushers;and Miss Flossie SHAW,organist,at the home of the bride's father,from which the bridal party repared to Trinity Church,where Rev.Sole TAYLOR,of Covington,performed the ceremony.The wedding selections and march were rendered by Mrs.Flossie SHAW. Green and white were the predominant colors of the decorations.The bride was attired in an exquisite pale blue tailor suit and carried a handsome bouquet of carnations. The bride's maid was gowned in white and carried Marechal Neil roses.From the Church,the party drove to the home of Mr.R.E.TAYLOR,the father of the groom,where another delightful reception was tendered them. Mrs.Mary CHAMPITT,of Jackson,is the guest of her sister,Mrs.S.A.OURV. Mrs.Bertie BOYD,of Trenton,visited Mrs.J.H.PEARSON. Mrs.John R.GREEN visited her daughter,Mrs.H.T.REIN. Mrs.Jane CRAIG, who resides in the 2nd District,mother of C.W. & T.B. CRAIG,is now past 86 years old,and enjoying good health.Her oldest son, T.B.,served in the Civil War under FORREST. Our old friend,John P. McLEOD,of the 8th District,has been in town for the last 10 days,visiting his daughter,Mrs.E.C. HARVEY, and other relatives."Johnnie Mack,"while somewhat feeble,is the same jovial,happy-go-lucky boy of the 60's. A special dispatch from Dyersburg,dated on the 3rd,announces the death of Mr.Mack TAYLOR, at one time a citizen and business man of Brownsville,and who is widely known and extensively connected to Haywood County.The dispatch follows;"Mack TAYLOR,a popular young druggist and successful business man of this city,died of pneumonia in this city,night before last,and was buried in the new city cemetery.The deceased,with his brothers,had established the Taylor Drug Co.,one of the leading drug houses of this section. Mr.James A. MOODY, after a lingering illness of several weeks from a severe attack of la grippe,died at his residence in the 6th District,four miles east of Brownsville,on Tuesday,March 3rd,1908,at 5:30 o'clock,in the 72nd year of his age,and his remains were interred the following afternoon at Chestnut Grove Cemetery.After the funeral service,conducted by Rev.R.L.NORMAN, the body was turned over to the members of Hiram S. BRADFORD Bivouac,who paid the last sad rites to their deceased comrade by going through the beautiful burial service of the order.The deceased enlisted in the Confederate Service in April,1861,as a member of Company I,Third Arkansas Cavalry,and served his country well until the end of the war.Mr.MOODY was a strick member of the Methodist Church,and lived up to all its ordinances.A splendid citizen,a loving and devoted husband and father,he raised to maturity a large family of useful children.He is survived by a widow and several children,one of whom is Dr.W.H. MOODY, of this city. Tuesday night,Isaac SHAW and his son,Jack,white men,were arrested for breaking the safe of the Brownsville Livery and Live Stock Co.The elder SHAW has for sometime been night man at the livery stable,and on several occasions,money has been missed from the safe at the stable.Suspicion centered strongly on SHAW and his son,and on Tuesday night a trap was set to catch them. Joe M.BULLEFIN and H.L.CURRIE secreted themselves in the stable.About 9:30,the younger SHAW was seen to go to the safe and take money from the box.While he was in the act of putting it in his pocket,the alarm was given and Marshal RUSSELL stepped in and arrested the son and the father.At the trial held Wednesday,Isaac SHAW was turned loose and Jack SHAW was bound over to Circuit Court. Mrs.Kate BENNETT,mother of Howard BENNETT, and widow of the late Peter BENNETT,died at the residence of her son in this city on Friday last,aged about 74 years.She was a daughter of Thomas POTTER,who located here in the early 30's,and was the last member of this family.Her whole life was spent in this voicinity.She married Mr.BENNETT more than 50 years ago,and was the mother of several,all save one of whom she survived.Of good,honest,North Carolina stock and breeding,she never departed from her youthful training,and her habits of industry,frugality,love of home and neighborly attention remained with her to the last,being a rich heritage and example to kindreds and friends.Services were conducted by Revs.MARTINDALE and HENDERSON, and the remains were interred in Oakwood Cemetery. The Commercial-Appeal of Wednesday,contains the following notice of the death of a former resident of Brownsville,and a brother of Leopold LEVY. "Julius LEVY, a prominent Main Street merchant,died yesterday morning at his home at 505 Beale Avenue.Mr.LEVY was taken ill last Thursday and an operation was performed for appendicities.He was a leader in the Jewish Church and charitables circles.Mr.LEVY was born in Germany and came to this country when he was 21 years of age.At the time of his death,he was 56 years old.He leaves a wife and 4 children;Leo,Jr.,Lawrence S.,and Misses Jennie & Caryne LEVY. HARWELL, which occurred last Thursday week. She lived to a ripe old age.She leaves a husband;one son; and two daughters to mourn her loss.She was a consistant Christian member of the Baptist Church.she was buried at the Rudolph Cemetery by a large host of sorrowing friends.The funeral services were conducted by Rev.Lewis GWINN. The infant of Mr.William RODGERS was buried last week at Zion.Mrs.RODGERS is quite ill. Annie Katherine,the little daughter of Mr.& Mrs.L.C. HOPKINS, has been very sick for the past two weeks,but was reported better yesterday. W.M. RASPBERRY ,after having been confined for several weeks from a malignant attack of erysipelas,is able to be out again.He is very thankful to his neighbors for the many acts of kindness bestowed upon him during his illness. Mathew KIRBY and Walter HUNTER, two notorious negroes of the town,came to grief Wednesday night when they attempted to hold up a negro.The attempt was made on East Main Street in front of R.N.MOORE's residence.KIRBY was seriously cut and the negro who was attacked was carved up real badly.HUNTER was arrested and lodged in jail.We were unable to secure the negro's name who did the cutting. ---FROM EUREKATON---The community was made sad Friday,February 28th by the death of Miss Esther THOMAS.The funeral at Harmony Church was attended by a large crowd of friends and relatives who mourn her early death. Mr.Aubrey SEYMOUR has left for California,where he is expected to be for some time. Mr.F.P.HILL died at his home near Hillville Monday,March 2nd,and was buried in the Moore graveyard,Wednesday,March 4th. News was received here Wednesday of the death of the seven-months-old son of Mr.& Mrs.Douglas JEFFINS at their home in Decatur,Ill. One of the handsomest arranged stores in Brownsville in under management of Mr.F.B.RAGLAND,assited by his sons,Will and John. James JEFFRIES,Surveyor of Customs,a Republican of State-wide reputation,died after a long illness at his home in Memphis,and the body was shipped to Camden,Tenn.,for interment Sunday,where it was laid to rest with appropriate honors. Matthews KIRBY,who was severely cut while attempting to hold up another negro last week is recovering.The States Graphic was in error when it gave HUNTER as the name of the other stick-up artist,Walter TUCKER is his correct name.He is now in jail awainting trial. The boy,CURRIE,who did the cutting,is a member of a good family of negroes,who have lived in Haywood County all their lives and bear good reputations. Miss Jane HART,aged 76 years,died at the residence of her brother,S.D. HART Monday and was buried in Marvin's Chapel Cemetery Tuesday afternoon.Services were conducted at the residence by Rev.C.O.N. MARTINDALE. Miss HART was one of the best and most noble women of Haywood County,was a life-long member of the Presbyterian Church and an active member in it until the past two years since she has been an invalid. We regret to announce the death of Mr.R.A.JACOCKS,which sad event occurred at his home in the 5th District on Thursday,March 13th,1908,in the 46th year of his age.His remains were buried on the day following in the old Jacobs burying grounds,Elder J.C.W. COBB conducting the funeral services in the presence of a large gathering of friends and relatives.He was a member of the Baptist Church,and is survived by two young daughters.mr.Jacocks was a descendent of one of the oldest families in the county, his life was an exemplary one and his untimely death is much regretted by all who knew him. ____________________________________________________________________________________
